Interseasonal heat transfer (IHT) is a process by which heat energy is collected and balanced between periods of demand and excess supply. It uses simple underground energy stores to turn solar energy collected by suitable surfaces, such as asphalt, into useable energy. Surplus heat energy from the sun is collected during the summer and stored in the ground for use in winter. Cooling energy is collected during winter and stored for summertime use. Current developments in this technology are presented.","PeriodicalId":182274,"journal":{"name":"Power Engineer","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124845378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Crook","doi":"10.1049/PE:20050303","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1049/PE:20050303","url":null,"abstract":"As more and more nations switch to cleaner fuels in a bid to hit Kyoto commitments, transporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) are reaping the benefits. Natural gas is supplied to around 40 reception terminals in energy consuming countries. International LNG trade dates back to 1964, and, since then, more than 80,000 LNG carrier voyages have taken place, covering more than 100 million miles, without major accidents or safety problems. While this sounds impressive, it is the recent onslaught of technology development in LNG carriers that has really turned heads. While the demand for cleaner fuels has spurred on the transportation of liquefied natural gas, it may also be accelerating the development of new, exciting tanker technologies. The article discusses developments such as the successful use of dual-fuel engines (diesel engines designed to use gas fuel), the surge in diesel-electric carriers, on-board liquefaction and the increasing use of electronic control of marine engines.","PeriodicalId":182274,"journal":{"name":"Power Engineer","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127555916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Çelik","doi":"10.1049/PE:20050307","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1049/PE:20050307","url":null,"abstract":"The induction furnace has been used in a massive range of applications from heating, melting and welding to shrink-fitting, forming, soldering and even plasma physics. Furnaces operate at frequencies between 10 Hz to 60 MHz, and as a result, different power supplies - operating at different frequencies - have also been developed. Induction steel heating furnaces (ISHF) have several advantages in practical applications. However, when a material is heated within an ISHF, its resistivity and magnetic permeability fluctuate, which proves detrimental to the control of power within the furnace. One way to improve power control within an ISHF is to use a programmable logic controller (PLC). Indeed, modern PLCs are modular, affordable, have large memory capacities, and also have special functions such as pulse wave modulation (PWM) and data communication. Using a PLC not only eases position, temperature and pressure control within the ISHF, but also provides overvoltage and overcurrent protection. A new PLC control system design allows heating to take place at constant power while maintaining a steady resonance frequency. The article introduces the system.","PeriodicalId":182274,"journal":{"name":"Power Engineer","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125390533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rogerson","doi":"10.1049/PE:20050304","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1049/PE:20050304","url":null,"abstract":"As the first fuel cell car prototypes smell success, commercial versions are not scheduled to hit the streets for decades. A few in the industry fear steep hurdles will actually stop fuel cell vehicles from ever being commonplace. Unfortunately the problems extend beyond simply designing an efficient and affordable fuel cell. The necessary hydrogen has to be stored in the vehicle, which also means that an infrastructure of fuelling stations - where drivers can buy the gas - is crucial. Ideally, hydrogen should also be produced at these stations, but it is the production of hydrogen that has become one of the biggest controversies. The easiest way to make hydrogen is to process an existing fossil fuel, but it can be argued that, economically speaking, this is pointless. If hydrogen could be produced from non-fossil fuels at a reasonable cost, then it could be worthwhile. Even if the mass production of hydrogen were to take off, the distribution problems would be a logistical nightmare. Also a problem is who would fund the building of a network akin to today's petrol distribution network. Clearly, fuel cell vehicle developers face tough times.","PeriodicalId":182274,"journal":{"name":"Power Engineer","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134462039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On 2 December 2004, the British Standards Institution published one of the most significant and demanding standards ever to be developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). First approved in October 2003, BS:EN14181 - Stationary Source Emissions - Quality Assurance of Automated Measuring Systems - will have far-reaching consequences for regulators, equipment manufacturers and process operators. The new standard tackles air pollution by focusing on a tighter monitoring of emissions, and describes quality assurance procedures to ensure that continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS) can meet EU legislative requirements. However, many in the industry are still unsure exactly how and why they are actually affected by EN14181. The introduction of EN14181 and the BREF guidance is going to present the power generation industry with significant and potentially costly challenges of implementation. Having the right equipment to optimise environment and process efficiency will be key to future success and profitability.","PeriodicalId":182274,"journal":{"name":"Power Engineer","volume":"394 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133376948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
