It is especially important for developing countries, as they attempt to transition to modern growth and catch up with more advanced technologies for educating students. Investment in public education, especially STEM education, has sparked transformational changes in development processes, with improvements in living standards, healthcare and longevity, food security and other indicators of human development. However, climate change has the potential to erode these gains. For example, food and health insecurities due to the changing global environment and land degradation are major issues facing poor countries. With a focus on improving education for school children in post-war Liberia, our research examines the efficacy of the Internet Backpack in fostering STEM education. The Internet Backpack has been deployed globally as a self-sufficient technology that facilitates learning. In this paper, we discuss the Internet Backpack as a technology applied in STEM learning in Liberia through multi- stakeholder partnerships. We discuss efforts to develop project- based learning curricula which include environmental life sciences programs on sustainable agriculture and forestry, earth science, and life science to protect critically important species. We highlight the importance of implementing technologies such as the Internet Backpack for enhancement of STEM education. We also highlight the importance of STEM education in the 21st century development processes, including prioritizing the mitigation of climate change.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123431273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, age discrimination against older workers seeking new job opportunities is prevalent. We conducted a study that asked participants to rate resumes of job candidates from various backgrounds for an IT job position. We found age bias, or ageism, in hiring decisions is implicit and more prevalent than other well-reported forms of bias, such as race or gender biases, yet ageism is also far more difficult for job candidate search algorithms to ignore. In this paper, we examine the challenges of age biases in job hiring algorithms and discuss various steps that can be taken to mitigate them.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"247 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133704948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This longitudinal research maps the impact of the democratization of technology on vulnerable groups (women and children), artisans and micro-entrepreneurs who aspire to incorporate digital technologies into their daily lives in the context of the five Helix model of innovation. The findings reveal the challenge of linking technology to society and communities, using a decentralized infrastructure that moves technology to the periphery, bridging the gap between digital literacy and end-user oriented digital fabrication experience. The interaction between academia, private entities, government, society, and territory is the evidence that draws systematized approaches that are integrated into the same purpose: that technology is an ally of society and that it promotes their creativity and learning throughout their lives. their lives.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121954885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowhere is this more evident than health information seeking behaviour (HISB) such that medical and governmental websites, general search engines, and social media platforms were relied upon to retrieve credible information. Using state-level measures of conformity bias (cultural tightness) and conservatism in the US and a province-level measure of conservativism in Canada, the present study considers the relationship between cultural tightness, conservativism, and vaccination rates. The analyses demonstrate that cultural tightness and conservatism were associated with lower levels of vaccination and a reduced rate of vaccination. Replicating previous studies, this study also represents a correlation between internet HISB and consequential health behaviours, in this case, changes in vaccination rate and regional mobility.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130946632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We employ some of these lessons to introduce a tripartite decision-making toolkit, informed by dilemmas encountered in the pursuit of responsible AI/ML. These are: (a) the opportunity dilemma between the availability of data shaping problem statements versus problem statements shaping data collection and processing; (b) the scale dilemma between scalability and contextualizability; and (c) the epistemic dilemma between the pragmatic technical objectivism and the reflexive relativism in acknowledging the social. This paper advocates for a situated reasoning and creative engagement with the dilemmas surrounding responsible algorithmic/data-driven systems, and going beyond the formulaic bias elimination and ethics operationalization narratives found in the fair-AI literature.","PeriodicalId":180420,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132737260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
