As a result, the way of life in most peri-urban areas is now mainly urban. What is yet to be determined, however, is whether peri-urbanisation within the country is a blessing or a scourge for the original inhabitants of peri-urban zones. This study therefore examined the Quality of Life of the original inhabitants of Domboshava peri-urban in the wake of peri-urbanisation. The study used a mixed-method approach and collected data from 80 original inhabitants sampled from the area. The majority of the study participants reported a low Quality of Life as a result of peri-urbanisation, which has brought about or exacerbated realities such as financial deprivation, unemployment, seasonality, energy, water and housing challenges. Assistance required to improve the Quality of Life of the original inhabitants includes entrepreneurial and job opportunities, provision of water, sanitation and energy facilities as well as financial and food aid. The study concluded that peri-urbanisation could be more of a scourge than a blessing for the original inhabitants of Domboshava peri-urban.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123206283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four main subject areas are explored: the representation of the local and national environment, demands and desires for the future, the means by which young people expect to achieve (or not achieve) said demands, and sociodemographic factors. The selected neighbourhoods were El Limón in Guatemala City, Popotlán in San Salvador, Nueva Capital in Tegucigalpa, Jorge Dimitrov in Managua and La Carpio in San José. A sample of 300 respondents were selected using sampling quotas. One of the primary findings of the study is that 37.7% of participants neither study nor work, and that only 15% have access to social security. Although inequality was not identified as being among the most pressing problems, when asked about the distribution of wealth in their respective countries, 73.6% of participants considered said distribution to be ‘very unfair’ or ‘unfair’. This recognition of inequality coexists with a deeply rooted conservatism and a largely unquestioned belief in the legitimacy of destiny and parental authority. Against this historical background, electoral democracy is far from offering any kind of significant or profound response and has deepened the institutional void, and in many cases, migration has become more of a push than a choice.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123841666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research sought to contribute to literacy scholarship by providing empirical evidence on the age-long debate on the role of adult literacy in community development. The research was framed by two theories—literacy as social practice and people-centred development—that provided the lens with which the data was collected, analysed and interpreted. The qualitative case study design was used to enable the collection of data in a natural setting and understand the focus of the research from the perspectives of the research participants. The findings suggest that adult literacy may not necessarily lead to community development. The article concludes that no matter how effectively adult literacy classes are organised, without community-based, people-led, self-reliant development, some people will insist that the government takes responsibility for development even with the small things they can do themselves.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":"77 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113939596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a purposive sampling, 80 participants were selected from eight villages located in eight administrative districts. In-depth interviews were conducted to collect some quantitative and mostly qualitative data. The study findings indicated that the majority of rural older people were in abject poverty, had limited social security and suffered from ill health, malnutrition, and inadequate medical and general health services. Also, they lacked steady income, had lost family relations, suffered from social isolation and loneliness, and are dependent on others. Due to loss of family relations, they lacked caregivers and had little or no social status and position, thus making them susceptible to depression, frustration and stress. Moreover, they have limited access to recreational and transportation facilities, as well as community-based support programmes. Our findings suggest implementation of social security and protection schemes in the rural area and extension of adequate and quality health care facilities to the rural older. In summary, rural older people in Bangladesh need a more balanced and integrated social and medical care policies to maintain a decent quality of life.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127449725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But this rule, while well intended, tends to disadvantage small not-for-profits. This article defends the ethics of commission in fundraising, especially proposal writing, and proposes a model for compensation via commission, which is no more objectionable than other remunerative methods. The arguments developed in the article raise further questions about approaches to mobilising funds for not-for-profit and non-governmental organisations.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114786564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Qualitative research method and the phenomenological approach was used. In-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted with 20 aged returnees, and the data was analysed thematically. Findings revealed that the participants returned from six major cities in Nigeria and had spent an average of 25 years in their host communities before the decision to return. They returned because they could no longer cope with the city life. Health challenges, low economic base and poor infrastructure in rural areas made adjusting to life difficult and was compounded by high expectations and poor treatment from community members. However, aged returnees who coped better with these challenges were those who had access to informal care and financial support. While informal care is acknowledged as an important coping mechanism, social workers could provide enduring support to help aged returnees cope better. The study recommends that social workers create robust community-based supports such as localised skill acquisition, education, counselling, connections with institutions and community resources, and advocacy to help aged returnees adjust to rural life. Programmes that bridge the gap between the youth and the returnees may be instituted to improving cross-generation learning and understanding. These findings may be useful to other countries in similar contexts.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125770297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A survey of Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work students was conducted in two social work programmes in the Southeastern United States (n = 218). The analysis showed that the students expressed consistent recognition that global content matters, yet there was an observed discrepancy between recognition of the relevance of global content and its expected impact on students’ own future direct practice. They also perceived limited opportunities to engage in international learning experiences during their academic programmes. Results are discussed with implications for further research, social work education and curriculum development.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132162645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By following a quasi-experimental research design, pre- and post-training interviews were conducted with 34 participants. Post-training assessments were conducted after an interval of 6 months and again after a 4-year follow-up. The analysis showed that majority of participants had 41%–74% of disability, were involved in manual work, had knowledge on free bus pass and were getting pension. The comparison of pre- and post-training data showed significant difference in knowledge (F = 29.051, p < 0.001) and service utilisation levels (F = 11.999, p < 0.001). It was evident that knowledge played a vital role in utilisation of the services. Hence, government and service providers need to pay more attention on creating awareness of policies, programmes and services for the better utilisation of them.","PeriodicalId":179996,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Community and Social Development","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121981794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
