Among the recommended treatment regimens as stimulants, the most frequently advised ones are methylphenidate (MPH) preparates. Among long acting MPH preparates, the form that contains an osmotic release oral system (MPH-OROS) is frequently used in clinical practice. Studies about risks, causes and outcomes regarding high dose MPH intake and effects of high dose MPH preparates in humans are limited. This article presents the clinical picture of a 12 year old boy who attempted suicide by ingesting 15 tablets of 36- mg MPH OROS. Exposure to an overdose of MPH-OROS exhibited acute sympathomimetic toxicity but no life-threatening symptoms in this patient. This case report might suggest that higher doses of MPH-OROS could be tolerated well under fine clinical observation and management; although more larger scale studies in thi...

We investigated the roles of the (-1019 C/G) promoter region polymorphism of 5-HTR1A and the G861C coding region polymorphism of 5-HTR1B genes in susceptibility to OCD in a Turkish population. Methods: Two single nucleotide polymorphisms, 5-HTR1A (rs6296) and 5-HTR1B (rs6295) genes were genotyped in 76 OCD patients and 57 healthy controls that were unrelated, using PCR-RFLP method. Results: We did not observe any difference in the genotype distributions of rs6296 and rs6295 between the OCD patient and control groups. Conclusions: As far as we know, our study is the first to establish the association of genetic variants 5-HTR1A (rs6296) and 5-HTR1B (rs6295) with OCD in a Turkish population. Based on our results, the relationship between polymorphisms of 5-HTR1A (rs6296) and 5-HTR1B (rs6295) with OCD do not seem.

Acute diplopia can be seen with some general medical drugs and psychotropic drugs. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely prescribed to treat a variety of psychiatric disorders. Sertraline is a relatively selective serotonin reuptake \u0000inhibitor with some dopamine reuptake inhibitor activity. This paper reports development of diplopia, a rare adverse effect of SSRI, in a 14 years old patient with major depressive disorder following use of sertraline. Clinicians should keep in mind that diplopia may occur with sertraline treatment.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate psychometric properties of this scale as Turkish PTSD-Short Scale (PTSD-SS) in a sample of undergraduate students in Turkey. \u0000Method: Participants included 415 university students, among which 351 (84.8%) reported trauma and thus were included in the analysis. Participants were evaluated with the PTSD-SS and the PTSD Checklist Civilian (PCL-C) version. \u0000Results: Turkish version of the PTSD-SS was found to be psychometrically sound PTSD screening measure with high convergent validity when compared with PCL-C (r=0.79) and having a Cronbach’s ? of 0.87. In addition, a single component accounted for 49.94% of total variance for PTSD-SS. The PTSD-SS had sensitivity and specificity scores of 0.91 and 0.77, respectively, when using the optimal cut-off score of 24. Additionally, the PTSD-SS showed good discriminant validity as it significantly differentiated students with high risk of PTSD from those with low risk of PTSD. \u0000Conclusion: These findings supported the Turkish PTSD-SS as reliable and valid PTSD screening instrument with a unidimensional scale construct.

Neurpeptide Y system and Neurexins were shown to be associated with alcohol dependence. Recent studies identified new genetic polymorphisms related to endogenous cannabinoid system, neuropetide Y and neurexin. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the association of Neurpeptide Y LEU7PRO rs16139 and neurexin 3 gene rs760288 polymorphisms with alcohol dependence in patients with alcohol dependence and healthy control subjects. Methods: 123 patients who were diagnosed with alcohol dependence according to the DSM-IV criteria and 159 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Blood samples were used to investigate polymorphisms. The genotyping of the neurexin 3 gene rs760288 and the neuropetide Y gene Leu7Pro rs16139 polymorphisms was performed using TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assays Real-Time PCR System. Results: Of the 2 genetic polymorphisms investigated in the present study, we detected association between and neurexin 3 gene rs760288 polymorphisms with alcohol dependence. Conclusions: Neurexin gene polymorphisms might be an important factor in development of alcohol addiction.

Acute unilateral myopia is a very rare condition that is commonly associated with drug use. Here, we present a woman diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) who have been treated for two years in our clinic. She was on fluoxetine (Prozac) 80 mg/day when adding aripiprazole (Abilify) 10 mg/day as an augmentation agent has triggered unilateral myopia. After cessation of aripirazole her myopia has disappeared.
