Several images were compressed using Waaves, MMWaaves, and MMJPEG2000 to observe which tool provided the best visual quality while maintaining a high compression ratio. Compared to Waaves, the MMWaaves achieved compression gains up to 40% for CT scans and 50 % for MRI. In addition, the SSIM values attributed to the compressed images were between 0.96 and 0.988 while the PSNR values were higher than 42. In addition MMWaaves attained a superior performance than MMJPEG2000.","PeriodicalId":177948,"journal":{"name":"IEEE-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129387131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent advances in echocardiography allow real-time three-dimensional dynamic acquisition of the heart. However, one of the major limitations of the three-dimensional echocardiography is the limited field-of-view (FOV), which may lead to an acquisition insufficient to cover the whole geometry of the heart. Recently, methods to improve the FOV and image quality have been introduced by acquiring multiple conventional single-view images with small transducer movements. These methods rely on image registration to align singleview images, and therefore, require sufficient overlap between images to obtain accurate alignment. In this study, we propose a method that relies on a multi-camera tracking system external to the images for image alignment, and therefore, it does not have the constraints of image overlap or quality. The multicamera tracking system is capable of tracking position and orientation information of several objects simultaneously. The accuracy of the alignment of the multi-camera tracking system is superior to the image resolution of echocardiography images. In this pilot project, we used a dynamic heart phantom and a cuboid gelatin phantom to evaluate our method and showed that the proposed method yielded an accurate alignment of image volumes in three-dimensional space.","PeriodicalId":177948,"journal":{"name":"IEEE-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130937489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The collected OCT data was divided into three distinct groups: healthy subjects, DME patients with significantly increased outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness and DME patients without visible changes in the ONL. For each group, the ONL was segmented and processed, yielding a representative A-scan. Using reference values for the physical and optical characteristics of the healthy human retina, we used a Monte Carlo method with a model for the ONL to simulate an A-scan for each group and compare it to the real OCT data. This allowed to identify which alterations in the cellular characteristics are responsible for the changes observed in the OCT scans of the diseased groups.","PeriodicalId":177948,"journal":{"name":"IEEE-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130972023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method is a quick and easy way for taking pre/postprandial and pre-sleep glucose measurements and it is very simple for most of the patients. However, it does not allow collecting detailed information about excursions of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia since most of the samples are widely spaced in time, which leads to lose important information for the treatment of diabetes. Nowadays, Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS) is used to solve such problem. CGMS devices take blood glucose samples continuously (normally every 5 minutes) from patients having type 1 or type 2 diabetes. This paper presents a literature review exploring the current CGMS applications and the role of this signal in the identification of risk factor for diabetic patients.","PeriodicalId":177948,"journal":{"name":"IEEE-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131118697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, a computer program is required to ensure an accurate treatment and this program needs feature a graphical user interface so that the clinician can interact with the input in a convenient way and check the effects of parameter changes on the output effectively. In this work, a graphical user interface is proposed which requires less human intervention compared to similar, commercially available systems in use today. Sleep impacts many facets of our lives from chronic disorders to workplace productivity, happiness and many other dimensions that we are continually discovering. Advances in technology and health informatics have made it possible to measure and understand sleep and related social factors in the real world. We are specifically interested in understanding sleep before and during the month of Ramadan - a time when people fast from sunrise to sunset. This fast is observed by more than a billion humans yearly and consequently there are some impacts to the society. In this paper we introduce the development of a health information system capable of acquiring, managing and visualizing health data for 1. Sleep signals were acquired by utilizing wireless sensing technology to measure sleep in a naturalistic setting rather than asking users to sleep in a sleep laboratory and 2. Social factors captured from surveys through a web platform rather than utilizing paper surveys. The system was developed to be easy-to-use by users and study administrators. We introduce to our knowledge the first research study, Fasting In Ramadan Research sTudy (FIRST@Masdar), capturing sleep and social factors before and during Ramadan from a total of 40 participants over two consecutive fasting years of 2012 and 2013.","PeriodicalId":177948,"journal":{"name":"IEEE-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133062030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
