Active power line conditioners (APLC) are one important method of achieving harmonic reduction. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel voltage-type APLC which cancels harmonic currents by injecting a compensation current. The proposed APLC consists of a variable DC voltage source, an inverter and a neural network controller that is trained with the genetic algorithm and backpropagation. Computer simulations for two load current test cases show that the neural net can provide switch control signals for the proposed APLC to generate compensation currents that reduce line current THD significantly.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. Supporting the models and gauge control were a new Level 1.5 computer system with interfacing to the existing plant Level 2 system, a Level 1 control system for the finishing mill and runout table sprays, static armature supplies for the finishing mill screwdowns and interstand loopers, and field supplies for the common bus generators and main drive motors. The entire system, including a new finishing mill pulpit with the associated operator desks, was installed and commissioned without the benefit of extended down time or outages, utilizing the design for startup (DFSU) process.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The motor was supplied from a high frequency (20 kHz) AC resonant link via an MCT-based bidirectional converter. Hardware and software implementations of the various motor control functions are presented. The closed-loop observer combines the current and voltage models via a speed-dependent gain. The current model was formulated to operate in the rotor reference frame, and requires only an encoder angle, and not the actual rotor speed for implementation. The closed-loop observer permits the use of a pure analog integrator to calculate an adequate stator flux. The use of an AC resonant link further complicated an all digital calculation of the stator flux. The observer and adaptive controller were tested on a 400 Hz, 2 hp induction motor for low and high speeds. The closed-loop observer showed sensitivity at low speeds. This was attributed to the current model rotor flux estimation. At high speed the closed-loop observer followed the voltage model rotor flux estimation attributes. The MRAS was able to improve the complete speed response by correcting the current model rotor flux observer for errors in the estimation of its parameters.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. {"title":"A novel single switch per phase converter topology for four-quadrant PM brushless DC motor drive","authors":"R. This paper is concerned with such an attempt to formulate a novel converter topology for a four-quadrant PM brushless DC motor drive. The proposed topology has a single switch per phase limiting the motor drive to half-wave operation. But it also endows unique features with high reliability such as shoot-through free topology by having a switch always in series with a phase winding, operational possibilities even with one or two phase windings failure, reducing the converter losses to half that of the full-wave inverter, reduction of gate drivers and amplifiers, and reduction in logic power supplies requirement. Many of these features result in low cost and compact packaging of the converter for the PM brushless DC motor drive. The machine design modification requirement due to the half-wave operation of the proposed converter is derived in this paper to help in the realization of the proposed motor drive in industrial applications. The formulation and description of the circuit topology and its operation with the motor, their dynamic modeling, simulation and analysis and its comparison to the full-wave inverter fed PMBDC are the key contributions of this paper.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. In this paper the possibility of defining a standard methodology for the specific iron loss measurement (iron losses per mass unity), with static supply, is analyzed. In particular the paper underlines the main problems which can be found when standard magnetic measurements are carried out with nonsinusoidal sources. Since PWM inverters represent an industrial standard solution as supply source, the problem is analyzed using common magnetic materials and taking into account the effects due to the inverter characteristics, as an example modulation index, switching frequency, modulation technique. In addition in the paper a basic structure of a standard test bench is proposed, also taking into consideration the required instrumentation.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The resulting model, including saturation effects and core losses is used to unveil the inherent oscillatory instability of the machine and to predict the steady-state performance in the motoring and generator modes. {"title":"DC auxiliary power system minimum and arcing ground faults in industrial facilities","authors":"K. Fleischer, G. Every DC system is subject to faults, in fact, short-circuits and ground faults can be expected at any point. Even if the maximum and minimum values are generally defined with reference to bolted-fault conditions, bolted faults are rare and the fault usually involves arcing and burning (impedance). Therefore, the limiting value of minimum short-circuit depends on the arcing fault. Since an uninterrupted DC arcing fault can cause significant power system equipment and building damage from the fire and smoke that can be produced (i.e., burning cable insulation), it is necessary to: identify critical fault points; estimate the modes and effects of these faults; examine ways in which they can be located; select the best protection methods to isolate the fault; mitigate system damage and outage time; and maintain personal safety. In addition, surveillance and system configuration management programs should be established to prevent the potential for arcing faults to occur. Finally, this paper discusses the extent of damage that can result from a DC arcing fault and recommends system and protection enhancements to significantly limit this damage.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. A turn-to-turn fault will break that symmetry and give rise to a negative sequence current which may then be used as a measure of fault severity or to initiate protective action such as a circuit breaker trip. A new way of looking at the effects of turn faults has been developed that improves sensitivity and speed while reducing the probability of misdetection, taking into account voltage balance, load or voltage variation and instrument errors. The method has been implemented on a PC and tested, in real time, on a specially prepared small motor. Reliable detection of one shorted turn out of 648 turns per phase (in a Y connected motor) was demonstrated with the fault indicator becoming fully developed in two cycles of line frequency after initiation of the fault.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. A closed loop state space observer using two phase current feedback measurements and two phase voltage commands provide estimates for the unmeasured states: position and velocity.
