To help quantify and optimize assertion, the improvement in performance resulting from utilization of the third harmonic voltage is the topic of this paper. Two different topologies are studied; series rectification (SRS) and polyphase rectification. It is shown that, for a constant value of peak flux density, a maximum power gain of 15.5%, with respect to the pure sinusoidal case, can be obtained and that this gain is primarily a result of an increase in fundamental volts. The presence of a third harmonic in the flux density distribution yields higher core losses. For a constant peak flux density the hysteresis loss remains constant and the eddy current loss increases. However, the net increase in output power offsets the increment in core losses and a higher efficiency is achieved. The analytical predictions are compared to simulation results and experimental measurements for the three phase case. For the experimental set-up, having a third harmonic voltage of 20%, the overall efficiency is estimated to have increased by nearly 1% when compared to the pure sinusoidal case.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. Once given the sizes and locations of new loads, the existing electrical distribution system was studied to see if proposed loads could be added to the system. It was apparent immediately that this was not possible. The power system was an island system, not connected to the utility network. Power generation could not be increased. Full voltage starting of the new, large motors would cause excessive voltage sag no matter what the power source. Further, the existing system was operating near or above rating in several critical areas. The authors describe how the solution became a classic application of IEEE Red Book Section 2.5, which covers power system modernization and evaluation programs. Considerations of safety, operations and maintenance played a major part in every design decision.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. As part of this program, advanced machine navigation and control technologies are being developed for underground room-and-pillar and highwall coal mining that can be applied to commercially available mining equipment. These technologies use off-the-shelf components and a flexible control software architecture to minimize the effort required to adapt them to mining equipment. An accurate reliable navigation system that can provide the mining machine's heading and location at all times is a critical requirement for a remote-controlled mining system. After much research involving several different types of navigation sensors, the Honeywell Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System was selected as showing the most promise. It has been installed on a continuous mining machine at PRCs surface test facility. This paper describes the system being employed on a mining machine while final accuracy and performance testing continues.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. Designers do not have the confidence to totally eliminate the hardware breadboarding steps for at least two reasons. One is that discrete electronic component models as well as fluorescent lamp models either do not exist or are not sufficiently accurate. The second is that many iterations of computer simulation are generally required to match the resistive lamp impedance curve when detailed lamp models don't exist and resistive lamp models are used. However, with the development of new integrated circuits designed specifically for fluorescent electronic ballasts, the lamp and non-IC component models become less important, especially if the IC controller operates at a fixed frequency and if certain network criteria are met. As a result, the extensive hardware breadboarding phase can be drastically reduced. One design example is presented and summary results are tabulated. Some key waveforms from simulation and measurement are compared. Then, the design is expanded to the entire family, the circuit parameters of which are calculated.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The inductor design is carried out by using an iterative procedure where the operating flux density is increased from zero to the saturation value. For any given value of the flux density the winding resulting in the lower AC resistance is determined. Both solid round wire and Litz wire windings are considered. The significance of the paper is that the design procedure allows for the combination of the flux density and winding which result in the lower power loss operation is determined. Therefore, inductors designed by following this procedure result in a high efficiency and minimum temperature rise.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. This method may take 3 years to get results. Because many new fluorescent lighting products have been introduced and many new manufacturers have entered the marketplace, the compatibility of fluorescent lamp/ballast system is of concern for manufacturers, specifiers, and end-users, who cannot wait 3 years to determine compatibility. To address this issue, some researchers have tried to develop methods to predict whether or not lamp/ballast combination will be compatible. This paper reviews different methods used to predict fluorescent lamp life, and discusses the importance of developing a reliable method for predicting fluorescent lamp/ballast compatibility. A pilot study using X-ray fluorescence is summarized, to demonstrate the potential of using this technique to better characterize the nature of the lamp/ballast system.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The method is based on introducing a circumferential variation in the resistance of the outer section of either a double cage or deep bar cage rotor. Simulation results for a linear double cage machine show that the method is feasible and provides incremental rotor position tracking with good dynamics. The paper describes an implementation of the method for a 30 kW double cage machine having variable gauge copper wire in the outer slots. It is shown that whilst the rotor position-dependent signals are robust to changes in load, interference harmonics arising from slot saturation and rotor slot harmonics cause problems for rotor position tracking. These problems are discussed in relation to the present method and that of designed asymmetries in general.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The ISTAC is a technique where the magnetic flux density around the fixed contact in an arc chamber is enhanced using a new fixed conductor which is formed in a J-shape. This increases the arc driving force and the opening torque of the movable conductor at the beginning of the current-breaking motion. During this development, the magnetic fields in arc chambers were analyzed by 3-dimensional nonlinear numerical analysis and the usefulness of the analysis was confirmed by measurement. A new arc chamber configuration was designed and optimized using this analysis. It became clear that at the beginning of the current-breaking motion the magnetic arc driving force and the opening torque of the movable conductor in the new arc chamber with the J-shaped conductor were larger than those in old arc chambers with a U-shaped fixed conductor. In a high current-breaking test, an experimental MCCB with the new arc chamber showed 1.6 times the rising rate of arc voltage of the old one. By use of the ISTAC, a new type of MCCB has been developed, having a high level of current limiting performance in spite of its small external dimensions. Moreover, free spaces in the MCCB due to the reduction in size of the arc chamber could be used for supplementary functions.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The control scheme is based on the mathematical model of the motor and is applicable to the constant torque and field weakening operations. The theme allows the motor to be driven with maximum torque per ampere characteristic below base speed and it maintains the maximum voltage limit of the motor under wide field weakening and the motor current limit under all conditions of operation accurately. The ITC scheme is also shown to be very effective in suppressing the cogging and ripple torques produced by such motors due to stator slotting and nonsinusoidal air gap flux distribution respectively. These torque profiles are obtained from test runs of the drive under ITC and are used to augment the torque reference of the drive. The control scheme has been verified by experiments on an IPMSM which has nonsinusoidal back EMF and very high cogging torque.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96.
