These results are useful for discharge lamps with electronic ballasts. These lamps show acoustic resonances, so that certain frequencies must be avoided in the supply current. Measurements were carried out at input power and light output on HPS and metal halide lamps in the range of 125 to 400 Watt. All measurements are compared with the 50 Hz supply current case. One series of tests was executed at 400 Hz in order to stay below the fundamental frequency for acoustic resonance. At 400 Hz, HPS lamps produced an audible noise. Another series of tests was performed at modulated frequencies between 25 and 35 kHz; this is above audible noise and the fundamental acoustic resonance frequency. Lamp failure did sometimes occur at certain frequencies between 15 and 25 kHz, depending on the lamp type and was probably caused by acoustic resonance. No significant immediate influence of frequency on lamp efficiency was measured.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. A new low profile ionizing surface for static elimination 一种用于静电消除的新型低轮廓电离表面

{"title":"A new low profile ionizing surface for static elimination","authors":"W. Larkin","doi":"10.1109/IAS.1996.559318","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IAS.1996.559318","url":null,"abstract":"This paper describes the development, testing and application of a low profile ionizing surface (LPIS) which can help overcome the problem of capacitance of charged objects. The problem of static charge removal where the capacitance of the charged object prevents its neutralization by conventional static eliminators is described as well as several problems which remain unsolved on common machines throughout the industry. For example, an object as simple as a piece of paper slides across a flat conductive surface and there is a transfer of electrons which causes the paper to stick, cling or get out of alignment. There is contact, static generation and the resultant cling and no conventional static eliminator can remove the charge because of the capacitance of the paper in the intimate contact with the conductive surface. There is no voltage to ionize. Also, dry paper is an insulator and by definition cannot be grounded to the conductive surface. How the low profile ionizing surface can overcome the effects of capacitance by being part of a machine surface is described. Testing of various conductive, fibrous, metalized and microfiber surfaces is described and results shown. Finally, applications and static electricity removal performance are described.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. Overvoltage stress may cause dielectric system failures in motors without suitable protection. An explanation on why LTNs are successful in reducing motor failures is given. Surge impedances of drives, cables and motors are characterized since the apparatus uses resistors and capacitors to provide an AC impedance match to the effective surge impedance seen at the motor. A design methodology to determine optimum resistance and capacitance is established, predominantly constrained by maximum allowable peak motor voltage. Energy loss equations of the LTN as a function of carrier frequency and cable distance are derived. Simulation and experimental results of reflected wave stress on the motor with an LTN shows good correlation. Cost and electrical performance comparison of the LTN to other reflected wave protection techniques in the 1/2-500 hp motor range shows its beneficial aspects.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. This paper addresses this kind of modulation nonlinearity employing the space vector approach as a modeling tool. Closed form expressions are obtained, defining the inverter linear modulation range in terms of the dwell time and other inverter parameters, including load characteristics. Simulation results are presented to support the theoretical analysis.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. In the proposed method, some inherent inconveniences of the use of the variational method such as long calculation time and the difficulty in designing the foward vector are diminished. The application of the method is oriented to repeated jobs realized by industrial robots manipulators. Through simulations, and experiments. The energy minimization of the proposed method was verified.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The system converts the analog input signal into a digital stream of data. By averaging the digital data stream over a switching period of the power converter, the required measurement is obtained. Harmonic distortion of the input waveform and noise caused by EMI is inherently filtered out. The analog part of the sigma-delta A/D converter is very simple and operates synchronously to a clock. This makes it possible to integrate the sigma-delta converter into a small ASIC. The stream of digital data at the output of the ASIC can be transmitted using a fibre optic link that also insulates the sensing point from control electronics, so that noninsulating sensors can be used.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. A method of reducing both the currents is proposed, based on an equivalent model taking parasitic stray capacitors inside an induction motor into account. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) radiated by a 3.7 kW induction motor drive system is actually measured, complying with the VDE 0871 Class A [3m]. Experimental results verify that the combination of the already proposed common-mode transformer and the normal-mode filters being proposed in this paper is a practically viable and effective way to reduce the EMI resulting from both the common-mode and normal-mode currents.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The motor incorporates the benefits of PM machines, namely the high power density and efficiency, overcoming some of its major disadvantages, such as high cost and limited speed range. Low cost is achieved due to the utilization of simple ceramic PM (ferrite) magnets but the unique flux concentrating magnetic structure allows for the maintenance of a high air gap flux density and consequently high power density. All the active material (coils and magnets) are placed in the stator, so that the rotor structure is very simple like that of the switched reluctance machine (SRM). An extended speed range is obtained thanks to a field coil that can be used to weaken the PM field at high speed or to boost the field at low speed.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The discharge remains in the state of a glow discharge since the formation of an arc spot at the cold cathode does not take place. To investigate the arc spot ignition on cold cathodes under defined conditions, a special experimental setup was developed. An arc ignited between horn electrodes in a clean argon gas atmosphere is blown magnetically against a third so-called commutation electrode which is negatively biased against the arc plasma. The ignition of arc spots on this cathode was investigated by electrical measurements and high speed photography. The arc traces of short current pulses were examined by in-situ optical microscopy of the cathode surface. It could be shown that the arc spot ignition is mainly determined by surface structures. These structures are able to produce local field enhancement factors in the order of 100 which raise the local electron emission more than any known depression of the work function. The results can be explained by a model in which a sufficiently high density of small emission sites produces by field emission locally such a high average current density that a plasma channel and an arc spot on the cathode surface is formed.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96.
