There exist two approaches toward ideal soft-switching circuit topologies. One is based on nonresonant converter techniques using snubbers, and the other is based on resonant converter techniques. The author previously proposed a novel totally soft-switched high frequency converter from the nonresonant approach. However, there remained a problem of undesirable effect due to parasitic diodes in each bidirectional switching are on its soft-switching characteristics. This effect is remarkable especially in the case of using MOSFETs. This paper presents an improved arm topology to prevent such undesirable effect, and confirms total soft-switching operation in an experimental manner.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. {"title":"A closed solution for the corona field and charge transfer phenomena and the transformation of the results into an arbitrary electrode system","authors":"Z. Kucerovsky","doi":"10.1109/IAS.1996.563825","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IAS.1996.563825","url":null,"abstract":"Experimental and theoretical studies of corona discharges available in literature have concentrated on the classical configurations, namely plane to plane, cylindrical, pin-plane and filament-plane. A number of closed solutions have been published that cover much ground; in addition, the popularity of numerical methods has resulted in a number of programs being available for situations where a closed solution is not available, not accessible, or too complex to apply. However, most of the studies have concentrated on a given particular corona geometry. Less attention has been focused on the degree of validity, with which the theoretical and experimental results obtained in one particular corona configuration could be applied to other configurations. In the paper, a charge transfer equation valid for one type of corona discharge (plane-parallel) is formulated and its approximate closed solution found. Then transformations are proposed that apply the results to the other common electrode configurations, such as the filament-cylinder and point-sphere. The errors incurred in such transformations are discussed and the accuracy of the transformations justified by data obtained from experiments performed specifically for this purpose.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. First, the three fuzzy control schemes, including a fuzzy model reference learning control (FMRLC) scheme, are described as the possible candidates for improving the induction machine drive performance. Then, the FMRLC is detailed to demonstrate the high potential for indirect vector controlled induction machine drives. Finally, based on experimental results, a comparison of the fuzzy control schemes is made and the results are summarized.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. It is based on a parameter dependent technique for on-line estimation of rotor position and angular velocity at the control rate. The current ripple principle is used to estimate position. The estimates are fed to a conventional closed-loop observer to predict the new position and angular velocity. The very high accuracy of the sensorless control algorithm at both low and high speeds is confirmed by experimental results.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. {"title":"Rotor position and velocity estimation for a permanent magnet synchronous machine at standstill and high speeds","authors":"Matthew J. Corley, R. The major contribution of this work is the introduction of a simple-to-implement estimation technique that operates over a wide speed range, including zero speed. The technique achieves simplicity by decoupling the inherent cross-coupling in PMSMs. The technique utilizes the dependence of inductance on rotor position in interior permanent magnet machines to produce position and velocity estimates both for field orientation and for all motion control of the drives. The technique functions in a manner similar to a resolver and resolver-to-digital converter sensing system, whereby in the proposed technique the motor acts as the electromagnetic resolver and the power converter applies carrier frequency voltages to the stator which produce high frequency currents that vary with position. The sensed currents are then processed with a heterodyning technique that produces a signal that is approximately proportional to the difference between the actual rotor position and an estimated rotor position. This position error signal and a torque estimate are then used as inputs to a Luenberger style observer to produce parameter, zero lag, position and velocity estimates.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96. The proposed ballast integrates power factor correction and half-bridge power converters. Another feature of this work is that the self-oscillating technique is used. The MOSFET's gate drive can be implemented with simplicity and low cost. Theoretical analysis is presented and a very simple design methodology is obtained, since the integrated topology can be treated separately as two independent power converters. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the principle of operation and the high power factor of the proposed topology.","PeriodicalId":177291,"journal":{"name":"IAS '96.
