This is in contrast to traditional simulation where entities are usually generated when needed, according to the appropriate distributions. This paper also introduces the Object Flow Model, where a single model can serve as the basis for the application software, for dam-based simulation, and for traditional simulation. The Object Flow Model uses an object-oriented database to describe entities and methods for manipulating entities and provides a visual formalism called the Object Flow Diagram (based on network-based process-oriented discrete event simulation languages), to describe the dynamic processing of an application. A data-based simulator for the Object Flow Model has been implemented for an apparel manufacturing shop floor based on data captured from a real-time payroll system to provide detailed, near-term advice for the shop floor manager.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132098176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines one such effort which uses simulation modeling as a means to quantitatively design such a system. The Normalize area is responsible for beat treating raw material for Delco Chassis wheel spindle bearing products. Within the area, product travels in containers that eventually are delivered to various machining lines. Since its inception, the area has been scheduled with a traditional \"push system.\" The result has been high inventory, long lead times, floorspace organization problems, and a lack of employee involvement. A Normalize pull system was proposed to provide for better control of product flow through the area. Furthermore, the pull system maintains a maximum inventory level of approximately two days for all part sizes at the machining lines. The simulation uses historical production data to replicate demand for Normalized product. By using actual production data, the Normalize environment is simulated as if the pull system had been in place for ten months in 1992 and 1993. The simulation's results confirmed the feasibility of the pull system. The pull system would have caused an acceptably low amount of starvation in the machining lines. With the pull system, plant-wide Normalized inventory can be reduce by approximately 48%. Furthermore, plant Industrial Engineers will be able to dedicate floorspace to properly store Normalized inventory.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133434655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SLX retains fundamental concepts of GPSS/H, such as its Transaction-flow world-view, Facilities, Queues, and Storages. However, SLX replaces some GPSS/H features entirely, and it replaces collections of disparate GPSS/H features with simpler, more general features. SLX is much more than a new implementation of GPSS/H. SLX is a layered modeling system in which GPSS/H comprises but one of the layers. SLX provides a foundation under GPSS/H and powerful extensibility mechanisms which facilitate the development of higher level, application-specific modeling tools. The sections which follow provide an overview of SLX, and describe the goals of the development of SLX, the architecture of SLX, the SLX environment, concepts retained from GPSS/H, features modeled after other languages, and the extensibility mechanisms of SLX. The relationship of SLX to other modeling tools is discussed in Section 8, entitled \"Can Do, Can't Do, Must Do, Should Do, Shouldn't Do.\" Since SLX is still under development as of this writing, this paper emphasizes design philosophies and principles, rather than concrete, syntactically accurate examples. The presentation of this paper will include a \"live\" demonstration.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133434848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gradient estimators may be used to optimize the performance of stochastic processes. In this paper we propose a method for sensitivity estimation that can be used for the optimization of stochastic discrete, event dynamic systems (DEDS). Most of the current, methods for gradient estimation have limited applicability for complex problems. The surrogate estimation approach that we propose uses the system's dynamics and heuristic relations in the parameters to construct the desired gradient estimators using local sensitivity estimators. We present an example of routing in an open data network. Some of the most successful methods for gradient estimation-such as the IPA method-cannot be applied directly and other methods are in-appropriate for real time operation. We show how the estimation of the gradient, of the stationary average sojourn time with respect to the routing probabilities can be decomposed in terms of local sensitivities. Each node needs to estimate the derivatives of the average queue length with respect to its own arrival rate. The computation is thus distributed and the estimation of the local sensitivities is a much simpler problem, suited for IPA. The amount of calculations required for our approach is proportional to the number of nodes in the network. Those required for direct estimation grow with the number of nodes, the number of outgoing links and the number of destinations. Our simulations indicate that, surrogate estimation is very efficient, even when some of the required assumptions for IPA estimation are not satisfied.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130250172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While one can always estimate a derivative (or sensitivity) by performing two distinct simulations at different values of /spl theta/ (and forming the estimate (J/spl theta/', - J/spl theta/2)/(/spl theta/' - /spl theta/)), here we focus on methods which compute estimates from a single sample path (though multiple replications can be used to reduce variance and compute confidence intervals). When applicable, these single run methods are often computationally more efficient. The model simulates that company's production, exploration, and discovery in the given sedimentary basin. The model also considers exploration by other companies in the same area, and uses a field distribution to estimate the size of the discovery. With this simulation tool, natural gas producers and users can evaluate different scenarios and decide how the risks and costs of fulfilling long term gas commitments should be shared.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"23 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114116435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Advances in the information sciences, including communication networks and high performance computer technology provides DoD the opportunity to effectively develop and mange this technology to prepare our forces for any military contingency. Recognizing this opportunity, the Deputy Secretary of Defense established the Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO) on June 21, 1991 to: . Facilitate the application of M&S in education, training, and military operations; research and development; test and evaluation; analysis; and production and logistics disciplines. . Assist in development of consistent DoD Component M&S plans. . Establish a liaison process to coordinate and assist M&S efforts among DoD Components and the Defense industry. . Foster cooperation among DoD to maximize M&S interoperability, eliminate duplicate development where possible, and promote high return on investment of advanced technologies. In addition, DMSO coordinates the activities and implements the decisions of the Executive Council for Models and Simulations (EXCIMS), a senior level panel of DoD) Component representatives. In the process of creating a seamless, synthetic environment, an infrastructure is being designed and developed. The statements of need for ten infrastructure areas and the status of efforts to date in those areas are discussed.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116050825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A large proportion of the literature on the topic is devoted to success stories. There is also an important model- based effort in gaining insight into the behavior of such systems, in identifying important success factors, and ultimately in optimizing various aspects of systems' performance. This paper focuses exclusively on model-based approaches in studying pull systems. Even though analytic models such as linear programming formulations or queueing approximations exist, the inherent complexity of pull systems makes simulation an essential tool in studying them. The objective of this paper is therefore to critically review selected papers that have recently appeared in refereed journals, highlight their approach, point out deficiencies, where appropriate, re-emphasize their message, and suggest new directions for research.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133713477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
