The IUSS is based on the philosophy of the Soldier as a System, equipment and other contributors to the soldier's performance considered as a synergistic whole. The IUSS methodologies simulate the Soldier System at multiple levels of interest, starting with the effects of equipment and battlefield stressors (e.g., chemical challenge and the subsequent burdens imposed by individual protection) on a taxonomy of human performance abilities and ultimately translating these effects to unit level measures of performance.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127795780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of the size of complex models, an organizational methodology is needed as an aid during both development and investigation of a system. In addition, some modeling formalisms are design to describe certain classes of systems while others are general enough to represent a broad class of systems. Therefore, the ability to use multiple formalisms is advantageous when the model is complex. In this paper, we define Heterogeneous Hierarchical modeling (HH modeling) as a modeling methodology which allows an investigator to use multiple formalisms and to organize these formalisms hierarchically. We then present Hybrid Model Theory which supports HH modeling by theoretically unifying graphic-based formalisms such as Petri nets, block models and state machines. An example is given which demonstrates top-down refinement of a partial model using a variety of established, well-known formalisms.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123607652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This methodology integrates the conceptual design and modeling processes. This results in a reduction in modeling cycle time. The modeling process utilizes a simulator, selected from a suite, which is coupled with a design tool. The design tool, an in-house expert system helps in preliminary analysis of and selection among several alternatives. The design tool then generates appropriate data files to be used by a simulator. A simulator, built using Automod II, represents in AMHS in terms of layout, vehicle control logic, and material flow. We discuss the architecture of a simulator in detail and present a case study. We have developed a set of simulators to handle different vehicle control algorithms.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122811188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper will examine the use of simulation in the design of control logic, the uses in agreeing the control logic and in disseminating the principles and benefits of the control logic to the total workforce. The use of simulation to derive control logic for a manufacturing facility is an integral part of most simulation projects, but can give an optimistic view of its performance as full information about the system state is available to the simulation modeller but not always to the decision makers in the real world. This paper will examine how restricted information affects the decision process and how simulation can be used to improve decision makers vision in these situations. A major food producer wished to change their method of operation from a traditional batch manufacturing to a method more responsive to their customer needs. The proposed method of manufacture was well documented and there was no need to simulate it I but there was a problem in communicating the new method to the total workforce and getting them to follow the new method. A simulation game was built that illustrated both the old and the new methods and then the game was made freely available to the workforce via the companies PC network. No training was given in simulation to the game players, but after playing the game the players not only understood the new logistical methods but also had an awareness of the problem solving capabilities of simulation.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128313386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the conditions under which it will be effective require careful checking if the method is to be reliably employed. We show that it is easy to get spurious answers which are apparently accurate when they are in fact quite wrong. For simple queues, there is a simple criterion which guarantees the effective implementation of the method: simply switch the arrival and service rates. This result can be shown using a theorem due to Chernoff, however here we show why the method works by examining sample paths directly, and in particular derive the variance reduction so obtained. In practice the variance reduction can be several orders of magnitude and we give numerical examples demonstrating this.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"23 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120899084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development standards and software tools implemented by J-MASS supports a disciplined approach to the development, configuration, operation, and analysis of digital models and simulations. J-MASS is an object-based modeling system designed to enhance supportability and maintainability. J-MASS will provide a library of verified and validated software components and models of weapon systems developed by the RDT&E community, models of threat systems developed by the intelligence community, and models of environmental effects provided by the scientific community. Because the models developed under J-MASS will have software components that are designed to consistent standards, the components can be reused to rapidly build other models and simulations. This ability to readily access and reuse existing models and components will result in large savings to the DoD in an era of shrinking budgets. J-MASS will truly provide the DoD with a common modeling architecture.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131071355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal should be to convey fundamental modeling principles and to examine the implementation of these principles in real settings. One particularly contentious element of the debate deals with the choice of and degree of emphasis on means for implementing simulation models. This paper advocates the use of the event graph modeling formalism as a vehicle for conveying the underlying structure of DEDS models and their implementation.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134223203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
