Hills and dips are common and curves with small radius often have an inclination towards the center. In this paper a novel road model is presented, which uses B-Spline modeling to describe the 3D road course. The right and left vertical road courses are modeled separately to represent the roll angle of the road. The well-proven clothoid model used for lateral road course estimation is extended with a B-Spline curve resulting in a more flexible road model as needed for rural roads and construction sites. This road model is tracked over time using a Kalman filter. Stereo measurements provide height information of the road surface, which are used for the 3D lane recognition.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130560884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, as a direct consequence of economic development, transport sits today as one of the major final energy consumers and one of the most important sources of carbon dioxide emissions. Furthermore, in the absence of major technological change, this unsustainable situation will undoubtedly continue posing an environmental problem as well as an oil-dependency dilemma. In this state of matters, this paper analyses the implications of public policies looking for sustainability in passenger transport activities and how they can be linked to new behavior patterns. Furthermore, we will point out how, accordingly to changes in passenger behavior, adaptation strategies can be planned.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132083993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach relies on traditional data mining techniques like clustering or statistical analysis and is demonstrated on data artificially generated by the mesoscopic traffic simulator Metropolis. Results are compared to the output of another approach that we propose, based on the belief-propagation (BP) algorithm and an approximate Markov random field (MRF) encoding on the data. In particular, traffic patterns identified in the clustering analysis correspond in some sense to the fixed points obtained in the BP approach. The identification of latent macroscopic variables and their dynamical behavior is also obtained and the way to incorporate these in the MRF is discussed as well as the setting of a general approach for traffic reconstruction and prediction based on floating car data.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125423530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary goal of ATM applications is the reduction of traffic incidents and the resulting improvement of traffic conditions. Dynamic traffic management practices can have different impacts and effectiveness in different networks. This paper discusses the opportunities and challenges related to the use of ATM in Greece and presents empirical results from the first related applications in the Attica Tollway. Furthermore, a statistical analysis of data collected from the Attica Tollway application is performed, aiming at investigating the impact of speed-limit messages on traffic flow.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126935009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, advanced driver assistance systems are based on on-board sensors. The evolution of wireless networks lead to the exploitation of cooperation among vehicles to enhance road safety. In this paper the benefits from using wireless communications for enhancing the situation awareness of the driver are highlighted. The situation around the vehicle is analyzed based on information coming from both on-board sensors and wireless LAN messages. Every equipped vehicle broadcasts twice per second a message including information about its global position (WGS84), velocity, acceleration, heading, yaw rate and other useful parameters. This information in combination with advanced digital maps is very useful for enhancing safety in road environments. The work described here is part of the work carried out for the European integrated research project SAFESPOT.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"245 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121073776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study we identified a driver's distraction as one of major psychosomatic states which may result in a traffic accident by using Internet based survey on a questionnaire basis. Then we aimed at creating a methodology in use for detecting driver's cognitive distraction by means of using the AdaBoost which is capable of rapid and accurate classification. Furthermore we verified an effect of pattern recognition features such as interval between heart R-waves (hereafter, heart rate RRI) from an ECG (electrocardiogram), pupil diameter, and, gaze angle and head rotation angle.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116093792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The predictive driver interpreter provides the anticipating signals for limiting the forward velocity which can guarantee a manoeuvre's safe realization without loss of control. It has been integrated in a control allocation structure. The controller has been tested for an open-loop avoidance manoeuvre which is given by a sine with dwell steering input. Simulations showed for the studied manoeuvre and truck configuration that the passive vehicle is stable up to amplitude of 105 deg of steering wheel angle. When no predictive horizon was applied in the control allocation, the amplitude could be increased to 150 deg. When a predictive horizon of 1.5 s was used the amplitude could be doubled and still be stable.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116552812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the support of Vicroads (Highway Department of Victoria State, Australia), local ramp metering in the RLB case has recently been investigated, aiming to design appropriate and practicable ramp metering approaches. A related control strategy has been developed and tested in macroscopic simulation, and this paper presents some representative testing results. This strategy has been incorporated into the coordinated freeway ramp signal control system HERO and will be applied in Melbourne in the frame of a large-scale freeway upgrade project.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125310612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper presents the development of a laboratory designed to explore GPS and other emerging traffic and traffic-related data for traffic monitoring and control. It also presents results to illustrate the scope of traffic information that can be provided by GPS-based data, using the city of Stockholm as a case study. The preliminary analysis shows that network coverage, especially during peak weekday hours, is adequate. Further investigation is needed to validate the data, and increase its value through fusion with complementary data from other sources.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116526782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
