Ramp metering is usually used as control measure to influence the flows, but a variable speed limit can also have large consequences for the merging process. This paper discusses the change in lane distribution due to a VSL and explicitly considers the influence of an on-ramp. To this end, the lane distribution just upstream of an on-ramp is compared with the lane distribution elsewhere. Just upstream of an on-ramp, a significantly lower fraction of the flow uses the outside (right) compared to a part of the road without any ramps. This holds both for a situation with VSL as without VSL. Besides, VSL increases the use of the outside lane near capacity. This way, VSL influences not only the speed but also the lane distribution, and thereby possibly also the merging ratio. The consequences of this changed lane distribution are site-dependent and should be taken into account when deciding on installing a system of variable speed limits.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121265306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a method for detection, measurement and classification of painted road objects that are typically found in European intersections. The features of the painted objects are first extracted using dark light dark transition detection on horizontal line regions, and then are refined using gray level segmentation based on Gaussian mixtures. The 3D bounding box of the objects is reconstructed using perspective geometry. The objects are classified based on a restricted set of features, using a decision tree and size constraints.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131765592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a car-following model that was developed using an adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to simulate and predict the future behavior of a Driver-Vehicle-Unit (DVU). This model was developed based on new idea for calculate and estimate the instantaneous reaction of DVU. This idea was used in selection of inputs and outputs in train of ANFIS model. Integration of the driver's reaction time delay and omission of the necessity of regime classification are considered while developing the model. The model's performance was evaluated based on field data and compared to a number of existing car following models. The results showed that new model based on instantaneous reaction delay outperformed the other car-following models. The model was validated at the microscopic level, and the results showed very close agreement between field data and model outputs. The proposed model can be recruited in Drier Assistant devices, Safe Distance Keeping Observers, Collision Prevention systems and other ITS applications.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132229567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is solely based on visual information, hence it is applicable to a large class of autonomous robots working in indoor as well as in outdoor environments. The proposed approach consists of an egomotion estimation based on disparity and optical flow using the Longuet-Higgins-Equations combined with an implicit extended Kalman-Filter. Based on this egomotion estimation a moving object detection and tracking is performed. Each tracked object is labeled with a unique ID while visible in the images. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on numerous challenging real world image sequences.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"98 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133847373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focus on applications to autonomous vehicles where a dominant movement of the camera along its optical axis is present. The presented algorithm exploits the geometric relations between the two viewpoints induced by the epipolar geometry, hence it is applicable for the static parts of the scene. These relations are used to remap the images so that the resulting virtual images are similar to images captured by an axial stereo camera setup. This alignment dramatically reduces the computational complexity of the correspondence search and avoids false correspondences e.g. caused by repeated patterns. Experiments on challenging real-world sequences show the accuracy of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133897911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Smart Transducer concept -along with IEEE Standard 1451- improves the scalability of these networked electronic devices into a vehicular system. This paper describes the design and implementation of a real-time environmental wireless sensor network that characterizes air quality in Asuncion, Paraguay. Mobile sensor devices in public transport vehicles provide an effective mechanism to develop an efficient solution for this characterization. Such signs can be switched on or off and fed with arbitrary data corresponding to the present traffic situation. As VMS are manifold in size, functionality and means to communicate with them, a certain degree of configurability is needed in order to meet project-specific demands and changing requirements in operation. Configurability has its advantages in offering a certain degree of flexibility. On the other hand additional efforts for documentation and hazards like misconfiguration might emerge. This paper focuses on configurability in the field of VMS. Possible configuration parameters are considered in regards to its importance during a VMS' life-cycle and the configurations-takeholders' demands for parameter-manipulation. Afterwards, capabilities for reconfiguration in today's protocol standards are analyzed and an outlook on future opportunities is given.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114858871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In certain conditions, providing left turn green time could reduce intersection capacity because of: a) larger lost time due to added phase, and b) shorter green time for the through traffic movements. In this study, we will compare the effects of three ITS-based left turn policies on the performance of a congested transportation network. The base policy is allowing left turns in all intersections along a corridor of the network with high traffic demand. The second policy is prohibiting them in some intersections of that corridor, while the third policy is removing these turning movements from all intersections along that corridor. When a left turn is removed, the left turners are rerouted in the network. To make sure that in each policy the network is working at its optimal condition, we used Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to determine optimal signal timing parameters for each policy. The results showed that prohibiting left turns in every other intersection along an arterial of the case study network increased the total number of vehicles processed by the network by 6.6% and resulted in a total of 2550 processed vehicles and reduced average delay per vehicle by 10.7% resulting in delay of 196.3 seconds per vehicle. Removing left turns from all intersections along an arterial of the network increased the total number of vehicles processed by the network by 9.1% and resulted in 2607 processed vehicles. This policy resulted in a decrease in average delay per vehicle by 3.1% and resulted in 213.0 seconds of delay per vehicle. Thus, in periods of heavy traffic demand for through movement and low traffic demand for left turns, prohibiting left turns in all or some intersections of a network could result in a significant increase in the performance of the network as well as a significant decrease in delay per vehicle.","PeriodicalId":176645,"journal":{"name":"13th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125039843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
