A specific solution developed for increasing the transmission reliability without increasing the delay is known as multiple description coding. In this paper, we compare four video MDC schemes based on different time splitting patterns and temporal two- or three-band MCTF. Taking into account the temporal distance between frames, we show the respective advantages and drawbacks of these schemes, for central and side decoders.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116263871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mutual information of acoustic and visual features has been calculated with different time shifts. Our result shows that the movement of feature points on the face of professional lip-speakers can precede the changes of acoustic parameters even by 100 milliseconds. Considering the measured time-shifts in synchrony in our system design the quality of our speech driven animations can be improved.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"291 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123171994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Continuous prolate spheroidal wave functions (PSWFs) were proposed by Slepian and are useful for analyzing the characters of the finite duration continuous Fourier transform. Based on the PSWF, the finite fractional Fourier transform was developed. In this paper, for digital signal processing application, we derive discrete-to-discrete prolate spheroidal wave functions. Then, we define the finite duration discrete fractional Fourier transform (fi-DFRFT) based on it. We can use the fi-DFRFT for filter design, multiplexing, modulation, encryption, and optical system simulation. The fi-DFRFT has the advantage of less complexity and is useful for deal with the noise that is chirp-like and finite duration.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"309 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123217107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In engine signal processing the problem of engine speed evaluation is one of the main problems of current research for engine control. In this work, two engine speed signals, recorded at the free end and at the flywheel, together with a multi-body model of the crankshaft are used to account for torsional deflections of the crankshaft. In order to estimate cylinder-wise torque, additionally one cylinder pressure signal is used to obtain a parametric torque model. The resulting parameter and state estimation problem allows the comparison of UKF and EKF. The performance of both algorithms was evaluated using measurements from a four cylinder combustion engine. Whilst practical issues still exist, this off-line study showed the feasibility of the approach.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"187 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123317501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

GACS processes have statistical functions that are almost-periodic functions of time whose Fourier series expansions have both frequencies and coefficients that depend on the lag shifts of the processes. The class of GACS processes includes the almost-cyclostationary (ACS) processes which are obtained as a special case when the frequencies do not depend on the lag shifts. ACS processes filtered by Doppler channels and communications signals with time-varying parameters are further examples. The discrete-time process obtained by uniformly sampling a continuous-time GACS process is considered. It is shown that such discrete-time process is ACS and it is proved that its discrete-time cyclic correlogram is a mean-square consistent estimator of the cyclic autocorrelation function of the continuous-time GACS process, as the sampling period approaches zero and the data-record length approaches infinity.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122178109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is formulated in the Bayesian framework. The sources are modelled as MRFs to accommodate for the spatially correlated structure of the sources, which we exploit for separation in 2D. The difficulty of working analytically with general Gibbs distributions is overcome by using an approximate density. In this work, the Gibbs distribution is modelled by the product of directional Gaussians. The sources are estimated by Maximum-a-Posteriori estimation using the approximate density as the prior. At each iteration of the MAP estimation, an annealing schedule is used for approximate density. This annealing schedule aids the algorithm to converge the global extremum. The mixing matrix is found by Maximum Likelihood estimation.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124133165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our two main contributions in this paper are : a clustering technique which regroups the vertices following the same affine motion; a geometry compensation technique based on the estimation of 3D motion parameters which are modeled by affine transform matrices. Then, a scan-based temporal discrete wavelet transform is applied on the compensated sequence, and the resulting wavelet coefficients are finally encoded by an efficient coding scheme which includes a bit allocation process. Simulation results show that our compression method provides good compression performances compared to some state of the art coders.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125209667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Orthogonal Matching Pursuit is known to offer better performance, but Matching Pursuit allows more efficient implementations. In this paper we propose novel greedy Pursuit algorithms based on directional updates. Using a conjugate direction, the algorithm becomes a novel implementation of orthogonal Matching Pursuit, with computational requirements similar to current implementations based on QR factorisation. A significant reduction in memory requirements and computational complexity can be achieved by approximating the conjugate direction. Further computational savings can be made by using a steepest descent direction. The two resulting algorithms are then comparable to Matching Pursuit in their computational requirements, their performance is however shown to be closer to that of orthogonal Matching Pursuit with the (slightly slower) approximate conjugate direction based approach outperforming the gradient descent method.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125444136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We claim that magnitude input data should satisfy certain requirements in order to provide the acceptable minimum-phase solution. The Fejér-Riesz Theorem guarantees us that 1-D discrete phase retrieval problem has always a solution if the trigonometric polynomial is positive definite, but an arbitrary set of magnitudes does not provide always a positive definite trigonometric polynomial. Sometimes this may be the reason for iterative methods to stagnate or for direct methods to give undesired results. Finally we discuss a criterium to decide whether a set of magnitude input data can solve the 1-D phase retrieval problem.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129983485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A noisy video is processed in blockwise manner and for each processed block we form a 3D data array that we call “group” by stacking together blocks found similar to the currently processed one. This grouping is realized as a spatio-temporal predictive-search block-matching, similar to techniques used for motion estimation. Each formed 3D group is filtered by a 3D transform-domain shrinkage (hard-thresholding and Wiener filtering), the result of which are estimates of all grouped blocks. This filtering - that we term “collaborative filtering” - exploits the correlation between grouped blocks and the corresponding highly sparse representation of the true signal in the transform domain. Since, in general, the obtained block estimates are mutually overlapping, we aggregate them by a weighted average in order to form a non-redundant estimate of the video. Significant improvement of this approach is achieved by using a two-step algorithm where an intermediate estimate is produced by grouping and collaborative hard-thresholding and then used both for improving the grouping and for applying collaborative empirical Wiener filtering. We develop an efficient realization of this video denoising algorithm. The experimental results show that at reasonable computational cost it achieves state-of-the-art denoising performance in terms of both peak signal-to-noise ratio and subjective visual quality.","PeriodicalId":176384,"journal":{"name":"2007 15th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129383575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
