A continuous, high quality connection to the cloud infrastructure is normally required, with frequent high-volume data transfer, which can have a detrimental impact on the user experience of the application or service. In this paper, the Context Aware Mobile Cloud Services (CAMCS) middleware is presented as a solution that can deliver an integrated user experience of the mobile cloud to users. Such an experience respects the resource limitations of the mobile device. This is achieved by the Cloud Personal Assistant (CPA), the user's trusted representative within CAMCS, which completes user-assigned tasks using existing cloud-based services, with an asynchronous, disconnected approach. A thin client mobile application, the CAMCS Client, allows the mobile user to send descriptions of tasks to his/her CPA, and view task results saved at the CPA, when convenient. The design and implementation of the middleware is presented, along with results of experimental evaluation on Amazon EC2. The resource usage of the CAMCS client is also studied. Analysis shows that CAMCS delivers an integrated user experience of mobile cloud applications and services.","PeriodicalId":176270,"journal":{"name":"2016 4th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Cloud Computing, Services, and Engineering (MobileCloud)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130698481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerous digital things or cyber entities will be generated and will reside in the cyber world, and countless real things in conventional physical, social and mental worlds will possess some cyber mappings or cyber components, so as to have a cyber existence. Cyberization is an emerging trend forming the new cyber world and reforming these conventional worlds towards cyber-enabled hyper worlds. It is absolutely necessary to establish a holistic and trans-disciplinary field, which we have called Cybermatics, to build systematic knowledge about new phenomena, behaviors, properties and practices in the cyberspace, cyberization and cyber-enabled hyper worlds.","PeriodicalId":176270,"journal":{"name":"2016 4th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Cloud Computing, Services, and Engineering (MobileCloud)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116162420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A mobile application is composed of a number of modules that are eligible for offloading to be executed at a remote server on the Internet and executed at a mobile device. We focused on the problem of how to transfer some modules of a mobile application to the server so as to minimize the total execution time of the whole mobile application. We used a directed tree graph to represent the relationship between the modules of a mobile application. Then, we formulated the offloading problem as a combinatorial optimization problem and proposed two algorithms to solve the offloading problem for a simple-chain application and also for a general application. The proposed algorithms were implemented and examined on the R-OSGi-based framework and the results show that the proposed algorithms are much more efficient than both the cases where no offloading is considered and where all the modules are offloaded to the server.","PeriodicalId":176270,"journal":{"name":"2016 4th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Cloud Computing, Services, and Engineering (MobileCloud)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127885388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After the promising results under achievement within the EU Mobile Cloud Networking project, we claim the suitability of deploying Evolved Packet Core (EPC) support solutions as a Service (EPCaaS) over a uniform edge cloud infrastructure of Edge Nodes, by following the concepts of Network Function Virtualization (NFV). This paper originally focuses on the support needed for efficient elasticity provisioning of EPCaaS stateful components, by proposing novel solutions for effective subscribers' state management in quality-constrained 5G scenarios. In particular, to favor flexibility and high-availability against network function failures, we have developed a state sharing mechanism across different data centers even in presence of firewall/network encapsulation. In addition, our solution can dynamically select which state portions should be shared and to which Edge Nodes. The reported experimental results, measured over the widely recognized Open5GCore testbed, demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the approach, as well as its capability to satisfy \"carrier-grade\" quality requirements while ensuring good elasticity and scalability.","PeriodicalId":176270,"journal":{"name":"2016 4th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Cloud Computing, Services, and Engineering (MobileCloud)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123609845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this problem, the augmentation of mobile devices with resources from surrounding devices or with cloud-based resources has gained popularity in the recent years. Existing solutions that follow this approach and offload computationally intensive tasks already yield great results for specific use cases. Unfortunately, most of these solutions are tailored to specific operating systems or programming languages, and do not support the flexible usage of resources. Furthermore, existing solutions implicitly assume external resources to be trustworthy, which is usually not the case in practice. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a secure and flexible resource-discovery solution for mobile augmentation systems especially targeting the pervasive-computing paradigm. This solution enables a dynamic use of external resources and assures that security-critical computations are offloaded to trusted resources only. We demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of our proposed solution by means of a proof-of-concept implementation. The potential of this implementation to improve performance and save energy at the same time is evaluated by means of two resource-intensive applications. Obtained evaluation results show that the proposed solution significantly speeds up applications on mobile devices and reduces their power consumption by 50%. Thus, the proposed solution enables fast, secure, and energy-saving execution of complex mobile applications.","PeriodicalId":176270,"journal":{"name":"2016 4th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Cloud Computing, Services, and Engineering (MobileCloud)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126125459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An ad-hoc mobile cloud can be constructed upon local devices, where devices work together and share resources, aspects such as energy and costs may be minimised. This paper builds on previous work which proposed an end-to-end system whereby user applications may be profiled for their resource consumption locally and then if augmentation is required, they may negotiate with a local mobile ad-hoc cloud for optimum energy and resource utilisation. The contribution of this paper focuses upon a novel and adapted Genetic Algorithm approach to resource negotiation in order to further enable energy-optimised resource augmentation for Mobile Ad-hoc clouds.","PeriodicalId":176270,"journal":{"name":"2016 4th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Cloud Computing, Services, and Engineering (MobileCloud)","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128592002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Meeting the resource requirements of a particular task in the private environment causes only minimal exposure of the core applications to public cloud. The potential risk issues to the private data and applications can thus be minimized. However, risks are significantly higher when core applications are migrated to public cloud. This places high importance on accurate identification of risk factor in job migration is extremely important. This report proposes to identify categories of risk arising from internal and external environment. This will require use of mitigating strategies to eliminate risk factors associated with the phases of a job migration. Such migration is achieved by taking in to account the roles of the dedicated users and set of common constraints. The findings from this research results indicate that safe job migration can be achieved with effective risk management and mitigation techniques.","PeriodicalId":176270,"journal":{"name":"2016 4th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Cloud Computing, Services, and Engineering (MobileCloud)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131489572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most works are focused on the cases when smartphones are actively used. However, one major issue with smartphones is that the standby time has become much shorter compared with traditional feature phones. Many users have to recharge their phones everyday even though they are not using the phones very often. In order to understand what happens with smartphone battery while the phone is not in use, we combine current measurements with user trace analysis to reveal how smartphones consume energy in the standby mode. We have identified several factors that cause energy wastes in the standby mode. Then we propose a series of optimization methods to demonstrate the potential of energy reduction on smartphone standby energy. Results based on user traces show that we can extend the standby time by as much as 87% with the proposed optimizations.","PeriodicalId":176270,"journal":{"name":"2016 4th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Cloud Computing, Services, and Engineering (MobileCloud)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133147084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
