Experiments concern the measurements of time to breakdown and streamer visualization, either in point-plane or in semi-uniform gaps (parallel plates with a triggering point). Results show that the transition between propagation modes remarkably depends on the electrode configuration. Contrary to the situation for ac equipment that is used for the electrical energy supply (IEC270), no detailed PD testing procedures are available for dc. ASTM 1868 only mentions \"repetitive pulses of more than one per minute\". In this paper, the merits of PD testing will be shown for several HVDC components. By carefully representing the PD data, a surprising amount of information can be obtained on the PD generating defect. Experimental arrangements used in the present investigation consisted of a corona wire, air gaps, thin oil film, mylor sheet and conducting transparent sheet placed on the lucite plate. Positive dc (on/off) high voltage was imposed on the corona wires and the conducting sheet was grounded. Diesel oil is used as a working fluid (/spl epsi//sub s/=2.2 and /spl sigma/5/spl times/10/sup -/5 /spl mu/S/m). They supply useful information to implement diagnostics on insulation systems. Such systems output consists of data about the amplitude, the number and the occurrence phase of the PD. Such acquired data (PD patterns) information is contained in 3D matrices and can be processed aiming at the identification of the morphology of defects. This preliminary work is part of a research focused on the \"measurements\" of defects, possibly present and acting as PD sites, in the insulation system of measurement transformers (VT) for medium voltage (MV), cast-resin type. \"Non-conventional\" PD testing procedures have been studied and applied acquiring the PD patterns in numerous and different test conditions. Measurements of the isothermal decay of surface and bulk charges under room conditions and at elevated temperatures and humidities as well as thermally-stimulated current measurements indicate excellent stability of surface charges of positive and negative polarity. Negative bulk charges, injected be electron beams, are less stable. In fact, these machines have to endure repeated mechanical, electrical and thermal constraints and, besides, when they are supplied by variable speed drives, the winding insulation is submitted to steep voltage fronts. In this paper, we study the setting up of the space charge as a consequence of the ageing of the stator insulation. The Thermal Step Method (TSM) was used to measure the space charge. We characterized samples taken from AC-machines stators windings which had been submitted to several ageing conditions (temperature, voltage fronts of different heights and steepness). In order to complete the investigations, we made also measurements of Thermally Stimulated Discharge Currents (TSDC) which give the energy levels of the traps. The results of this work prove the ability of the TSM for the composite insulating materials of a stator winding. They show that certain ageing parameters such as temperature and characteristics of voltage fronts act upon the level and the type of the space charge. One is annealed in air, and the other is annealed in a vacuum during imidization procedure. We have investigated electrical conduction in the two kinds of samples with low frequency voltage, and the difference between them have been discussed from the view point of ionic conduction. The samples annealed in air shows lead of current phase that due to the accumulated ionic space charge in the vicinity of the Al oxide layer at the Al-polyimide boundary. The samples annealed in a vacuum show lower conductivity and an anomalous current peak. The interpretation is given in terms of the Dissado-Hill-Jonscher theory. It is based on a cluster description of the structural ordering and fluctuation in carrier-dominated dielectrics. It is shown that this form of response occurs for systems of low spatial dimensionality and generates a sample-size-dependent conductivity. The relationship of the mechanism to that of power-law noise in electrical systems is identified and its structural interpretation explored.
