So, in order to understand the space charge formation in insulators, it is necessary to characterize these charging effects which can modify the injection conditions (primary energy and spot size) and the trapping ability. Focused electron injection on sapphire implanted with zirconium ions was achieved in a SEM with an energy of 30 kV. The trapping of charges was followed during the electron injection by recording the absorbed current. After injection, the quantity of trapped charges was measured by observing the mirror \"image\" created at low potential and compared to the quantity of \"image\" charges. The trapping rate decreases rapidly when the quantity of electrons trapped in the material increases. Variations in measured current versus applied potential have proven useful in diagnosing certain insulation defects and modes of deterioration. A number of different methods are typically used for high-voltage dc testing. For example, the test voltage may be applied as a series of either uniform or graded steps. Alternatively, a linearly increasing ramped voltage may be used. This paper will describe the principles of de testing, with an emphasis on the measured stator insulation current response versus voltage. Advantages and disadvantages of the various voltage application methods will be outlined. Adsorption experiments were performed through single or sequential exposures of pre-humidified and virgin dry samples using gas mixtures prepared at concentration levels varying from 1/spl times/10/sup 4/ to 5/spl times/10/sup 4/ ppm/sub v/. In all cases, the initial total pressure was set at 2 bar abs at 298 K. Based on the results, the 13X was found to adsorb the SOF/sub 2/ and to transform a portion of it into SO/sub 2/. This hydrolysis reaction led to an increasing amount of SO/sub 2/ in the gas phase which was monitored throughout the experiments, The kinetics observed in the early stage of initial exposure suggested an adsorption process controlled by a concentration gradient. The results also revealed that CO/sub 2/ species can be displaced by the SOF/sub 2/. When an amount of water as high as 4/spl times/10/sup 3/ ppm/sub v/ was initially present in the gas phase, the SOF/sub 2//SO/sub 2/ dynamics were not significantly modified. However, the new contaminant was found to be as effectively removed by the sieve as the SOF/sub 2/ species. On the other hand, a sieve which had been pre-humidified through extensive exposure to the ambient air released water when subjected to an SOF/sub 2/ gas mixture, pointing to a preferential SOF/sub 2/ adsorption. The TSM allows to determine and to localize the space charge density in insulating materials, while the TSC technique allows to obtain the average activation energies of the different processes of discharge or depolarization. In this paper, we discuss about the sensitivity of these two techniques to real charges and polarization. We show by coupling of these two methods that polycrystalline Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ can accumulate space charges in the bulk (when the sample is poled under high DC voltage). These charges may be released when the TSC technique is applied to the sample. The charges distributions, given by the TSM, show polarization of the alumina when poled below 200/spl deg/C, and a cathode electron injection above 200/spl deg/C. Accelerated life tests were performed until breakdown, measuring partial discharge evolution with time, by a test arrangement suitable to induce surface discharges on insulating material specimens. Harmonic voltages having different frequencies and phase, in the range of those usually recorded in electrical plants, were superimposed to the fundamental component. The tested material is polyethylene terephthalate. Either reduction or increase of life, with respect to sinusoidal conditions, were detected, dependently on the way as harmonic voltages are summed up. In particular, significant life shortening was obtained in the cases when voltage maximum is increased due to the contribution of harmonics. However, in spite of various investigations related to the polymer insulator, its aging mechanism due to acid rain have not been well elucidated. In this paper, aging characteristics of outdoor silicone rubber insulator resulting from the acid rain have been investigated with regards to sulfuric and nitric solutions. For this purpose, silicone rubber was aged by being immersed in the sulfuric and nitric solutions with different level of pH (5.6, 4.0, 2.5, 1.5) during 1500 hours and various tests were performed such as tracking, contact angle, tan/spl delta/, breakdown voltage, SEM, EDS, FT-IR. Regarding the effect of the acidity of nitric solution, the surface of test samples were slightly damaged up to pH 2.5 and ruined at pH 1.5. However, in case of sulfuric solution, the degree of the surface degradation was observed to be consistently increased.
