Relatively low impulse voltages, less than 20 kV, are required to initiate the discharges as there is an initial distribution of charge on the surface. The specimens subjected to the PD were examined using AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) and FTIR. It was discovered through the AFM observation that irregularities were generated in the deteriorated region of the insulation. The magnitude of the irregularities after 200 hours of aging was estimated to be 600-900 nanometers. From analysis of the FTIR spectra, carbonyl groups and amides were found to be generated in the LDPE specimen subjected to PD in air, whereas in specimens subjected to PD in nitrogen, amines were generated. The deterioration process of LDPE by PD was discussed in relation to these FTIR results.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114435730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, commercialized nonlinear electro-optic (EO) crystals have some defects and hysteretic characteristics of which the loop is shifted downward ascribed to the microscopic change of polarization /spl Delta/P in these defects. The refractive index ellipsoid of EO crystal, such as LiNbO/sub 3/, is changed by both the externally applied electric field and its hysteresis loop of which the effect gives rise to a discrepancy of index variation. Therefore, considering the influence of hysteretic characteristics an equation is newly proposed in connecting with the phase variation of modulated laser beam through LiNbO/sub 3/ crystal under applied electric field. For this purpose, PD generated from needle-plane electrode in air has been detected by use of LiNbO/sub 3/ cell and our proposed equation is experimentally approved. As a result, it is observed that PD measurable phase intervals are limited by the crystal characteristics such as asymmetrical P-E hysteresis and half-wave voltage. The number of PD pulse occurrence and its magnitude were observed to be increased with applied voltage, which may imply that it is possible to detect PD by this newly proposed electro-optic method.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114571210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A key requirement for these systems is, therefore, to withstand the high temperature exposure while maintaining efficient and reliable operation. Efforts were taken to design and develop a high temperature power inverter capable of 200/spl deg/C operation. In this work, a 1 kW, 20 kHz Mapham inverter was designed and built utilizing components developed for high temperature operation. These components, which included capacitors, inductors, transformers, were developed and demonstrated at 200/spl deg/C. The inverter system was evaluated as a function of temperature at different load levels. The inverter system, excluding its input, control and logic circuitries, was characterized at temperatures from ambient to 200/spl deg/C at 0%, 50%, and 100% resistive loading. With an applied input voltage of 75 VDC, the inverter produced an output of 250 VAC. The results obtained, which have indicated good operational characteristics of the inverter up to 200/spl deg/C, are presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117004650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We compared the electrical insulating properties of m-LDPE films and conventional LLDPE films. The high-field current of m-LDPE was found to be lower than that of LLDPE. The difference in current increased with the decrease of temperature. The high-field current was much suppressed in m-LDPE with a low melting point. The impulse breakdown strength of m-LDPE increased with the decrease of temperature. The insulating properties of m-LDPE with a low melting point were improved at 30/spl deg/C. These results were explained by a fact that m-LDPE with a low melting point includes more low-molecular-weight components.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123241405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Semiconducting composite materials with electrical insulation matrix and semiconducting fillers have been investigated with the aim of producing them with stable resistance for equalizing electrical field intensity in high-voltage turbogenerator winding insulation. For semiconducting fillers, different kinds of silicon carbide powders (SiC), soot carbon, and copper-bearing glass fiber tape have been used. For insulation binder ternary epoxy compounds and oil-glyptal enamel have been used. The mechanism for the operation of semiconducting compositions has been analyzed on the basis of obtained dependencies of the magnitude of the electrical resistance and its non-linear coefficient from electrical field intensity for compositions with different concentrations of semiconducting fillers, and by its correlation with a mathematical model of conductivity for semiconducting grain conglomerate. On the basis of the understanding of the two mechanisms: (i) the semiconducting structure formation and (ii) the operation such compositions, semiconducting materials with stable characteristics have been developed. The stability of the materials developed has been confirmed by testing and using them for a long time in high-voltage winding of the turbogenerators and hydrogenerators, produced by the Large Electrical Machines Plant \"Electrotyazhmash\" (Kharkov, Ukraine/), where this work was done.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115411613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
