Subsequent to the ageing procedure the insulation was microscopically examined using a digital image processing system, which is specially adapted to water tree analysis. Each water tree was measured and attributed to the categories bow-tie, single-winged or boundary water tree. The probability of water tree occurrence and length as a function of radial and angular position was investigated. Even under identical load conditions pronounced differences between different cables were found. The same holds for the ratios of the concentrations of single winged and double winged water trees, a parameter that gives us some insight into generation and growth processes of water trees.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130231558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was initiated to better understand the hydrophobic recovery of various polymeric materials at different temperatures. The materials were subjected to corona discharge for a specific period of time to destroy their surface hydrophobicity and later allowed to recover at various temperatures. The hydrophobic recovery was monitored using the contact angle technique.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"20 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120987965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent investigations have shown the importance of charge injection at the insulator and metal interface and of the surface treatment on the flashover characteristics. High voltage tests show that at a given voltage the flashover is a quasi periodic phenomenon. By measuring the variation of the current as function of time and observing the insulator surface with a video camera allow to decompose the components of a flashover cycle. First, the current slowly increases. In the steady state the I(V) curve is of Space Charge Limited Current type. Then the current increases, the vacuum may significantly degrade whereas light emitting precursors appear. The emitters can be located anywhere on the surface even they are often observed at the cathode insulator interface. At the last step the discharge occurs over the surface where trapped charges where located. It is proposed that the flashover is due to charge trapping followed by the propagation of a collective detrapping wave that occurs when the density condition for a self sustained detrapping wave propagation is reached, the precursors located at some surface defects being the trigger of the wave.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124409799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The PSA-method (Pulse-Sequence-Analysis) is applied to investigate the discharge behaviour. It is shown that a PD data base, that comprises typical model defects, can be efficiently used to identify the types of PD defects within high voltage (HV) equipment. When applying physically meaningful discharge parameters a reliable diagnostic decision can be obtained and the risk of misclassification can be reduced considerably.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121415103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The oxide layer thickness of the standard samples sandwiched between aluminum electrodes is in the range of 40-460 nm. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent (tan /spl delta/) in the high frequency range above 1 kHz show similar values to those published in articles, however their values are larger by two or three times in the low frequency and high temperature ranges. Besides, the dc bias gives a slight increase in the dielectric constant and also dielectric loss tangent. The response of this increase for the dc bias imposed to the signal is in the order of 10-100 sec which is relatively fast compared to the ionic hetero space charge behaviors. This phenomena is tentatively interpreted in terms of two site hopping polarization of space charges modified by injected charges from the electrodes.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122786395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new optical system, having two crossed light axes to observe the needle tip at different directions was designed. The shadowgraphic images from these two directions were combined through a beam splitter and focused on the photo-cathode of an image converter camera (ICC). The photograph taken by this high-speed shadowgraph system was reconstructed into the 3-D images of each frame using an image scanner and a computer. The growth and the decay processes of the streamer in cyclohexane were investigated by using this optical system. A random propagation of a filamentary streamer and actual movements of the bubbles produced by streamer were clearly shown as 3-D figures.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115825703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we measured the breakdown pressure wave and the space charge distribution up to electrical breakdown by using pulsed electro-acoustic method in 30 /spl mu/m thick polypropylene film. We discussed electrical breakdown phenomena based on the breakdown pressure wave and the dependence of charge density at anode and cathode on applied field and temperature. These experimental results suggested that the electrical breakdown phenomena were affected by the hetero space charge accumulation and the initiation point of electrical breakdown corresponded to the position of hetero space charge accumulation in the 30 /spl mu/m thick polypropylene film.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131120465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dipoles of finite length, which are randomly distributed in space, decrease the polarization of the whole dipole system due to their interaction. Dipoles on cubic lattice sites increase the polarization due to the interaction, as predicted by the Lorentz model. When the dipoles are shifted from their regular sites, the polarization decreases with the degree of disorder. If the length of lattice dipoles is increased, the interaction decreases the polarization too. Both lattice and disordered dipole systems exhibit hysteresis loops of their polarization. The remanent polarization of lattice dipoles drops sharply and for disordered dipoles it drops smoothly with temperature. The interaction results in distribution of activation energies for the dipoles.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131172775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resulting electric-field distributions were probed with piezoelectrically generated pressure steps; this technique is particularly well suited for directly measuring spread space-charge distributions in the volume of thin polymer films. From the calibrated pressure-step results, it is possible to estimate space-charge and thus also filled-trap densities; maximum space-charge densities of 600 C/m/sup 3/ corresponding to filled-trap densities of almost 4/spl times/10/sup 15/ cm/sup -3/ were observed on Teflon PFA under the present charging and annealing conditions, while the maximum space-charge densities in the other two Teflon variants were smaller by a factor of up to three. Some typical recent results on positively and negatively corona-charged samples of the three Teflon polymers TFE, FEP, and PFA are presented together with results on two-layer samples consisting of one positively and one negatively charged film, which demonstrate that the charges in the volumes of the individual films are quite well preserved upon mechanical (and electrical) surface contact.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125357058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By an analogous reasoning to what has been done for water-impregnated porous rock, we claim that there is a relation between these two phenomena. The predictions of our theory are shown to be reasonable. We further argue that a high value of the tortuosity is beneficial for the behaviour of the insulation system.","PeriodicalId":176239,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1997 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116948243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
