A technique referred to as algebraic decomposition is proposed for the modeling of electric power load demand in terms of the coefficient vector and the basis vector, and a new learning algorithm based on semigroup theory is put forward for extrapolation of the coefficient vector. Due to the non-stationary attribute of the load, the actual load is preprocessed by regression to become better correlated to daily time and temperatures. A rearrangement method based on the hourly temperature is developed to solve the problem of the roughness of the coefficient vector. With the algebraic decomposition of the rearranged regression load, a much smoother coefficient curve can be obtained. Based on the smoothness, interpolation and extrapolation can be achieved for each hour using the historical hourly temperatures and the hourly temperature forecast. The interpolated or extrapolated coefficient vector is recombined with the basis vector for each hour, and the recombined hourly load are grouped to form the final load forecast of the target day. A moving window slides through the whole year to perform the day-ahead load forecasting. Load data from New England Independent System Operator (ISO) is used to verify the capability of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130214675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For residential energy use, the average water heating load consumes approximately 14% to 25% of the total energy demand. Usually this energy is supplied by electricity or natural gas. This significant portion of a single household’s energy draw, coupled with rising energy costs, provides a strong motivation for the implementation of residential solar thermal systems. The purpose of this project is to design and fabricate a simulator for a small solar thermal collector array that can be used to research improvements to solar thermal collector systems. A modified on-demand water heater in conjunction with LabVIEW control software comprises the simulator system. The heater component interfaces with a LabVIEW control panel that accepts collector geometry and specifications and then calculates the appropriate heater power to simulate array output for a given set of meteorological weather data. The heater delivers the specified amount of power to the working fluid, which is varied by power electronics using phase angle control. LabVIEW control software requests feedback from inlet and outlet thermistors in order to accurately calculate the available power to the collector and the useful energy gain. For a given set of meteorological data, the system provides the ability to repeatedly simulate the same output power conditions within 9% of theoretical calculations. The simulator will serve as a foundation to study future modifications to residential solar thermal collection systems.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132823902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the instructional use of design, unique experiments, and open-ended projects that formulate and investigate realistic, inventive and complex problems students received more closely aligned classroom topic with industrial standards. This paper reports the results of the development and implementation of hands-on laboratory experiments in a newly developed laboratory for a two-semester undergraduate course in Instrumentation and Measurements in Mechanical Engineering. The course, designed for the undergraduate junior level, was a two-semester course for a total of four credits, and it took place in conjunction with a one-hour classroom lecture in mechanical engineering. A modified version of this approach, however, can easily be used at all levels of the mechanical engineering curriculum. Also, a very important part is a two-semester long, open-ended project (OEP) utilized a process which required the students to come up with creative approaches to problem solving. A full-cycle learning experience took place. After acquired necessary minimum knowledge, the students began their OEP with the development of an initial idea, continued on through the design and construction of a working prototype (including both system and measurement sensors on prototyping boards in ELVIS), and concluded by conducting a feasibility study, which involved writing a report, and giving a presentation. Because the ELVIS system is used mostly in many instructional electrical engineering laboratories, an extensive process of adaptation to mechanical engineering needs was implemented and the development of completely new experiments involving newly designed hardware and instructions had been developed and built in-house with student participation. in the areas of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), fluid dynamics of complex heterogeneous mixtures (multiphase, slurries, etc.), tribology, micro heat exchangers with phase transition, computer-aided measurement systems and instrumentation, electromagnetic sensors, turbulence and flow pattern phenomena in mixtures, deterministic and random signal analysis, and data processing and validation. To find a solution to this problem programs at state institutions have been forced to get funding from alternate sources. This can mean grants from federal or private sources, royalties from patents obtained by the faculty, and gifts from philanthropic foundations. Engineering and engineering technology programs have another source. Due to their close contacts with industry, these departments can work with their industrial supporters to obtain funding from them, both equipment and cash donations. These departments also have many alumni at technical companies, who are very loyal to their alma maters. These alumni are very receptive to appeals from the departments from which they obtained their education, to help these departments in increasing the quality of their programs. In fact, it is more than loyalty that motivates these alumni. If the program from which they came increases in quality and status, this can only result in increasing the value to the alumni's degrees. This paper will show the importance of networking and building relationships to further development activities in an engineering technology department at public institution, so that the department can increase in quality for future graduates. One method that works very well at Texas A&M University is to take prospects and donors to football games! This paper will show the results of what this process can bring about.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"411 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132061967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current treatments do not adequately remove all heavy metals from solution, are expensive, and use many resources. Metal oxide nanoparticles may be ideal sorbents for heavy metals due to their smaller size and increased surface area in comparison to bulk media. Heavy metal adsorption (Pb, Zn, Cd) to hematite (Fe2O3) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles was examined as a function of pH for use as a contaminant removal substrate in water treatment technology. Batch sorption experiments were conducted with 0.1 and 0.5 g/L nanoparticles. Adsorption results showed metal pHdependency with a Freundlich isotherm fit. Two-step desorption experiments using Pb and Cd indicated that Pb and Cd appeared to be irreversibly sorbed to the surface of hematite nanoparticles in the same solution conditions. Other experiments were conducted to determine the removal efficiency of multiple metals in solution by the nanoparticles. 0.5 g/L hematite nanoparticles simultaneously removed greater than 70% of Pb, Zn, Ni and Cd.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130874704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since materials are critical technology enablers, introductory materials science courses are fundamentally important for all engineering majors. Therefore, two mechanical engineering faculty members at Texas A&M University have significantly restructured the introductory materials science course to emphasize undergraduate student research projects. These research projects ask student teams to pose a research question to be addressed, develop a methodology for addressing the question, prepare a proposal for their research, carry out the research, and provide written and oral reports at the end of the semester. Radically different from approaches that emphasize coverage of a large collection of facts and concepts about the behavior of matter of topics, this process offers an alternative for introductory material science courses. The paper reviews the rationale for the change, describes how the process was implemented, and presents the preliminary results that have been obtained to date.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116500542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
