Netgear WGT634U 108-megabyte-per-second wireless storage routers mounted within environmental enclosures at outdoor and indoor locations across the Cambridge coverage area serve as signal repeater nodes for the network. Denton, Texas, is a promising site to deploy a wireless network similar to the one in Cambridge. However, the ambient outdoor conditions in Denton differ from those in Cambridge and may exceed the operating envelope of the repeater nodes if not mitigated by well-designed environmental enclosures. By instrumenting a sacrificial node with thermocouples and baking it in a furnace, we determined that the node’s built-in safety shut-off temperature is 130 ± 3 °C and that the temperature at which irreversible damage occurs is in the range of 135 °C to 145 °C. By synthesizing this data with historic regional ambient temperatures through heat transfer modeling, we conclude that node thermal failure cannot be induced by high ambient temperature, provided that the node enclosure is designed with sensible thermal management precautions. Additionally, we measured the maximum viable distance between a node and a receiver. Beyond this maximum separation distance, low signal fidelity yields high packet losses (50% packets lost) and data transfer rates inferior to those of dial-up Internet (less than 56 kilobytes per second). Using a global positioning satellite system, we found maximum ranges for inter node communication both via a line of sight and through a building wall. These ranges were 183 ± 4 meters and 49 ± 4 meters, respectively. These shut-off temperature data and signal range data guide the design of future outdoor node enclosures and indicate the inter node spacing necessary to assure fast, reliable WiFi Internet coverage in Denton.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125377553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One camp was a coeducational camp called Entry to Engineering for students entering 6 th , 7 th , or 8 th grades in Fall 2008. This camp is part of the UTA Engineering and Computer Science Summer Camps that have been running since 1998. The second camp was a newly inaugurated camp called Girlgeneering. This camp was for girls entering the 6 th , 7 th , 8 th or 9 th grades in Fall 2008. The new Girlgeneering camp was modeled after the structure of the Entry to Engineering camp with some specific modifications for its audience that will be discussed. In the paper we will discuss the goals for the two camps, the differences in the planning for the camps, and the staffing for the camps. We will also talk about our rationale for the ways in which the camps were planned differently. We will then talk about the ways in which the camps themselves were similar and were different in a variety of areas including student engagement, development of student subgroups (cliques), camper behavior, responses to camp activities, and other topics. We will include qualitative feedback from the campers and from staffers about the camps. We will close with a discussion of the benefits of the two types of camps and our plans for the future. The paper will be co-authored by the faculty camp director, the staff member camp assistant director, and will include comments from student camp staffers.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126166074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This course is taught in a way that emphasizes engineering problems in the real world and how math can be used to solve these problems. Fundamental mathematics tools such as linear algebra, matrices, Gauss method for linear equations, MATLAB, complex numbers and their applications, time-domain linear differential equations, and difference equations will be taught. This is one of the great strengths of the Electrical Engineering curriculum at Southern University - emphasis on applying fundamentals to solve real-world problems. In past years, it has been found that if freshmen students get involved with some mathematical tools to solve engineering problems, it greatly helps them to finish undergraduate study successfully. The main contribution in this paper is to demonstrate some of the fundamental mathematical materials at the same time, to emphasize some mathematical fundamentals in engineering applications for other Electrical Engineering classes at the early stage.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121672964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The modules follow the design procedures outlined in the book by Cumpsty 1 and are written in Visual Basic programming language to provide a Graphical User Interface (GUI). The modules deal with the design and analysis of two types of aircrafts: a large commercial airplane such as Boeing Dreamliner and a fighter aircraft such as F-16 or F18. Since the design requirements of these two types of aircraft are completely different, the students can use these modules to compare and contrast the two designs using these modules. The modules will be freely available to the interested educators and community through a web site.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128335828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field that integrates topics in mechanical engineering, electronics, control systems, and computer science. The Mechatronics course was developed because in mechanical engineering there seems to be a need for hands-on activities for students to get familiar and obtain better understanding of experimental implementation and control of multidisciplinary systems. The new 3-credit-hour course consists of 2 lecture hours and 3 lab hours per week. Ten lab experiments were prepared for this course during the summer and fall semester in 2005, with activities spanning from using basic electronic components to programming and integrating microcontrollers and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) with sensors and actuators. It has been determined that after taking Introduction to Mechatronics, several students have used the knowledge acquired in the course to solve problems in senior design projects, Master’s theses, and student design competitions. After offering this course for the first time during the spring semester in 2006, it was revised and improved to reorganize the sequence of subjects and to allow more time for student interaction during the lab sessions. This paper presents information about this new Mechatronics course and also includes several examples of projects developed by students using knowledge acquired in the course.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134378011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The escalating need for engineers will not be met from the pool of college-ready students who have chosen to pursue a career in engineering. This is especially true for many underserved segments of the population. There is a critical need for engineering transfer programs to provide the means for students who are not academically or financially prepared to advance towards a university degree in engineering. Richland College is a comprehensive community college located in Dallas, Texas. It is part of the Dallas County Community College District and serves approximately 15,000 credit students 2 . The articulated engineering transfer agreements signed between Richland College and area universities resulted in the creation of an Associate in Sciences (AS) with Emphasis in Electrical Engineering degree. The AS Engineering degree replicates the first two years of a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) degree and allows students who successfully complete the AS degree to gain automatic admission to a university and a guaranteed block transfer of 62-66 credit hours. This paper includes a description of this innovative program as well as quantitative data related to student demographics and academic performance. Initial analyses of AS Engineering graduates provides evidence the program is providing a viable means for under prepared students to reach their educational goal of a BS Engineering degree. Results from a university study 3 indicate the performance between students who entered the university as freshmen and those who transferred from Richland College were comparable in sequenced engineering and math courses. Retention figures after transfer are encouraging, with over 89% of the AS Engineering graduates enrolling in an engineering program.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127650617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
