Although with infinity number of antennas it has been shown that maximum ratio combining (MRC) attains the same throughput as ZF, we find that for antenna number as large as 100, ZF attains significant throughput gain over MRC. A tight lower bound is derived for cell throughput attained by ZF, characterizing three interference terms: intra-cell interference, inter-cell interference, and interference due to pilot contamination, where the three interference regimes of ZF are compared against with MRC. Numerical simulations are conducted to gain insight for the relation among the optimal cell throughput, pilot reuse number, number of base station antennas and the network topology. Extension to arbitrary network typologies are briefly discussed.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130119579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the radio-frequency (RF) chains associated with the antennas increase the system complexity and hardware cost. Antenna selection is a signal processing technique that can help reduce the number of RF chains, while preserving the system performance at a certain required level. We study the transmit antenna selection in measured massive MIMO channels from several measurement campaigns in the 2.6 GHz frequency range. Convex optimization is used to select the antenna subset that maximizes the dirty-paper coding (DPC) capacity in the downlink. With a certain number of RF chains, we increase the number of base station antennas from the same as the RF chains to a large number, from which we perform the antenna selection. The investigation shows that with more available antennas than RF chains, the antenna selection can significantly improve the system performance, especially for a compact cylindrical array, which without this antenna selection shows lower performance than a physically large linear array with the same number of elements, in the studied scenarios.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134049502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most of the existing studies focus on capacity optimization, energy-efficient resource allocation for MR-MC networks is an emerging area yet to be exploited. In this paper, we develop an optimization framework for energy-aware optimal resource allocation in MR-MC wireless networks. Our framework is based on a multi-commodity flow (MCF) formulation augmented with constraints developed from a multi-dimensional conflict graph (MDCG). The basic idea is that there normally exist multiple possible resource allocation configurations, i.e., the combinations of routing, channel assignment and scheduling solutions, leading to the same optimal network capacity. Our method can identify the optimal resource allocation with the minimum energy consumption. Numerical results show that our energy-aware resource allocation can considerably improve energy efficiency compared to an energy-blind solution. The amount of saved energy is even more significant with a slight sacrifice of the network capacity.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131500375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Small cell deployment of, for example, femtocells is considered as one of the most promising solutions for cellular operators to enhance coverage and meet the increasing need for capacity and QoS support expected by cellular subscribers. We consider a mobile Femto Base Station (mobFBS) installed in the public transportation vehicle, with an external antenna installed on the roof, to offer enhanced coverage and improved capacity onboard. We investigate the performance gains of a communication scheme in downlink LTE-A networks with mobFBSs. Users are assumed to be travelling using a public transportation vehicle, and the transmission between macroBS and users occurs through a mobFBS. The associated wireless links for this type of fast mobility are characterized by a doubly-selective fading channel. This causes performance degradation in terms of increased error probability. By taking advantage of the more powerful central processing mobFBS, we make use of a precoded technique to overcome the performance degradation that results from the wireless fading channel. We investigate the performance gain in terms of pairwise error probability (PEP) via a derived closed-form expression. Our analytical and simulation results indicate that significant diversity gains are achievable and error rates are tremendously reduced.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130722327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the relation between the exact BER and the approximate BER, which is obtained by dividing the symbol error rate by the number of bits per symbol, for subcarrier MPSK and MDPSK modulations. The asymptotic performance gap between the exact and the approximate BERs is quantified analytically through our asymptotic analyses. The accuracy of the approximate BER of both MPSK and MDPSK depends on the channel conditions. Under weak turbulence conditions, the approximate BER expression can be used to predict the system performance with high accuracy, while under strong turbulence conditions the approximate BER becomes inaccurate and can only serve as a loose lower bound of the exact BER. The asymptotic BER performance loss of MDPSK with respect to MPSK is also quantified analytically.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133027891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since existing mobile cellular networks need to persistently maintain a tunnel for each mobile terminal in their core system, the number of concurrent tunnels increases dramatically when a large number of M2M devices are handled in mobile cellular networks large popularity. The small Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of M2M terminals also has a strong impact on network cost. In this paper, we propose a tunnel sharing method to reduce the cost of accommodating M2M terminals to mobile cellular networks. In the proposed method, multiple terminals are aggregated as a group and share a single tunnel in the mobile core network. We also propose introduction of temporary tunnels to avoid call blocking caused by competition for a single tunnel among simultaneous calls. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method by mathematical analysis to examine its basic characteristics. We also estimate the monetary cost to realize the proposed method and reveal that it can reduce at 80% compared with traditional mobile core networks, while keeping the call blocking rate less than 0.1%.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132143641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the strong cross-tier interference, the EE optimization problem becomes NP-hard and computationally difficult to solve. IA is implemented firstly to mitigate the cross-tier interference and decouple the problem into independent EE optimization for D2D and cellular links, and then an energy-efficient MIMO transmission scheme which further enhances the EE is proposed. Furthermore, via the nonlinear fractional programming and modified water-filling method, the closed-form expression of the achieved maximal EE for D2D link is derived while satisfying the IA conditions. Simulation results confirm that the EE of the proposed scheme approaches a peak value when both the maximum transmit power allowances of D2D and cellular links are large enough. Meanwhile, the system energy and spectrum efficiency can be improved significantly compared with the conventional interference cancelation in D2D underlay network.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132445051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A simple biconvex lens provides angular diversity to the luminary and generates multiple spatially separated regions of overlapping light which can be resolved with a single detector receiver. This approach provides location information without relying on signal intensity measurements, time-of-flight data or complex imaging approaches. The multiple LEDs available in each luminary are exploited to create a large number of uniquely detectable regions, enabling both low positioning error and low complexity. Using a model based on experimental measurements, in a prototypical 5×5×3 m room the average positioning error is 26.0 cm using 4 luminaries and 12.9 cm with 9 luminaries.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133109583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
