In this paper, we propose an application-aware routing scheme with channel bonding technique to help improve the efficiency and performance of a MWCRN network. More specifically, we formulate an optimization problem aiming to meet the application request, as well as operating at low transmission cost. To solve this problem, we first study the greatest lower bound of transmission cost named as Utopian cost, as well as an upper bound of transmission cost. Moreover, we propose two distributed algorithms for practical applications. Simulation results show that the proposed application-aware scheme achieves low transmission cost in MWCRN while satisfying demands of application requests.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130985535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to recent reports, mobile video streaming traffic accounted for 52.8% of total mobile data traffic in 2011, and it is forecast to reach 66.4% in 2015. We analyzed the network traffic behaviors of the two most popular HTTP-based video streaming services: YouTube and Netflix. Our research indicates that the network traffic behavior depends on factors such as the type of device, multimedia applications in use and network conditions. Furthermore, we found that a large part of the downloaded video content can be unaccepted by a video player even though it is successfully delivered to a client. This unwanted behavior often occurs when the video player changes the resolution in a fluctuating network condition and the playout buffer is full while downloading a video. Some of the measurements show that the discarded data may exceed 35% of the total video content.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130637520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider a system where a macro base station (MBS) and a femto base station (FBS) together serve a number of mobile users. In this system, base stations and users make decisions in various resource management processes with different optimization objectives. Such decision making processes are usually correlated and an efficient mechanism is needed to coordinate the decision makers. We propose a four-stage resource management mechanism where access control, resource allocation (in both frequency and time domain) and power control are performed sequentially at the base stations and users, respectively. We formulate a resource management problem and find the optimal decisions for base stations and users. We show that this mechanism provides incentive for the FBS to operate in hybrid access mode. Simulation results show that the proposed resource management mechanism achieves a better performance than the mechanism with closed access.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124972239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a multi-tier cellular network with universal frequency reuse, macrocell users may suffer performance degradation due to inter-tier interference caused by closed-access small cells. On the other hand, when the traffic load served by the macro network tier is high, the OSA performance of the small cells will be poor. However, similar to that for the macrocell users, the quality-of-service (QoS) performance of the small cell users need to be guaranteed. Therefore, efficient channel sharing mechanisms need to be developed for macrocell and small cell users. In this paper, we investigate on two extremal channel assignment techniques, namely, the random channel assignment (RCA) and the sequential channel assignment (SCA) techniques in the macro tier in order to accommodate the overlaid cognitive small cells with an acceptable OSA performance. We show that, for downlink transmission, while the RCA scheme offers a low intra-tier interference for macro users, it results in a degraded OSA performance (in terms of probability of successful channel access) for the small cells. On the other hand, the SCA scheme enhances the OSA performance of the small cells at the expense of increased intra-tier interference for macro users. To quantify the performance gain achieved due to OSA by the small cells for these two channel assignment schemes, we compare the coverage probability of a generic macro user when the small cells are cognitive and when the small cells aggressively use the spectrum.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"51 Pt 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126390306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we extend this concept to enable a comprehensive control of a converged access, metro and edges of a core network. In particular, a generalized SDN controller is proposed for upstream global QoS traffic engineering of passive optical networks (PONs), Ethernet metro/aggregation segment and IP/MPLS networks through the adoption of an unique interface, in the framework of the Interface to the Routing System (I2RS). The proposed scheme aims to prolong the lifetime of the nodes in real-time for MICA2dot wireless sensor nodes/motes while at the same time it aims at optimizing the QoS and the overall throughput response of each node. The F-BTD scheme allows the nodes to sleep adaptively according to the estimated volume of incoming traffic. By considering the incoming traffic, the selective F-BTD allows each node to adaptively assign a sleep-time duration for each node's cycle by using traffic's backward difference. The F-BTD sleep-time duration associations of each node are then comparatively evaluated in order to define a minimum duty cycle for the next sleep-time slot of the node. The proposed scheme is being evaluated through Real-Time implementation by using the MICA2dot wireless motes that are exchanging resources in a Mobile Peer-to-Peer manner using a specified motion pattern. Comparative performance evaluations with other similar schemes show the efficiency of the proposed scheme in contrast to the nodes' lifetime extensibility. The proposed framework maximizes further the efficiency and reliability of the resource exchange process of the nodes, while it minimizes the energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127294549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, applying this technology to areas such as network management across a wireless embedded internet can pose significant challenges due to the verbosity of XML. A number of compression techniques and tools have been applied to this problem to help transform highly-structured data into a more compact form. Despite this choice, there is a lack of support for tools which are optimised for embedded computing. In this paper we will show the performance trade-offs that exist when compression is applied using different techniques.
