In this paper, we propose a novel, social-aware approach for optimizing D2D communications by exploiting two network layers: the social network and the physical, wireless network. First we formulate the physical layer D2D network according to users' encounter histories. Subsequently, we propose a novel approach, based on the so-called Indian Buffet Process, so as to model the distribution of contents in users' online social networks. Given the online and offline social relations collected by the Evolved Node B, we jointly optimize the traffic offload process in D2D communication. Simulation results show that the proposed approach offload the traffic of Evolved Node B successfully.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132981307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is possible to take advantage of this initial delay to reduce the energy required to operate the small access points (SAPs) and decrease transmission power in small cell networks. To demonstrate the trade-off between delay and transmit power, we consider a simple access scheme and analyze the distribution of the user equipment's (UE's) transmit distance. In the demonstration, there are a sufficient number of small cells to handle the peak traffic load. In order to reduce average power consumption, a number of SAPs are turned off during lower demands. The power consumption can be reduced further by turning all of the SAPs on and off, rather than selecting a subset and leaving them off. Since many SAPs are turned off at low traffic profile, UEs may be able to save energy by delaying their transmissions and waiting for a closer SAP to become available, thereby reducing transmission power. We analyze energy-efficiency versus delay trade-off, investigate optimality conditions for UE's transmit power and verify our analytical results via simulations. Results show that i) Instead of turning SAPs off for a long period, turning them on and off continuously and taking advantage of initial delay to connect a c yield an order of magnitude reductions in the transmit power, and ii) reduces the mean power consumption of SAP.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129052733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerical results show that for modest code rates in low signal-to-noise ratio regions, the normalized throughputs of FQAM based CM systems are close to the theoretical channel capacity limit compared to that of QAM and FSK based CM systems. Also, we analyze the performance of downlink cellular LTE systems using FQAM and compare it with that using QAM, especially for cell-edge users. Numerical results show that, unlike QAM, the statistical distribution of inter-cell interference (ICI) incurred with FQAM highly deviates from the Gaussian distribution and has a heavier tail. The results also show that due to the non-Gaussian nature of the ICI incurred with FQAM, the transmission rate of a cell-edge user using FQAM is significantly higher than that using QAM.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115279923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed estimation algorithms are highly suited for such a scenario. Nevertheless, communication overhead due to an exchange of variables among nodes can be problematic concerning energy efficiency and costs. In this paper, we present a Reduced Overhead Distributed Consensus-based Estimation (RO-DiCE) algorithm exhibiting a significantly reduced communication overhead in comparison to its unreduced version, the DiCE algorithm. However, by reducing the overhead a possible degradation in estimation performance of the algorithm is introduced. We investigate the RO-DiCE algorithm in terms of communication overhead, convergence behavior and error rate performance for different network topologies. We will show that for a full mesh topology the RO-DiCE algorithm is identical to the DiCE algorithm.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115401241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, we are interested in the scheme in which the most popular contents are pushed through broadcasting to alleviate the cellular data bottleneck. This strategy not only offloads the multimedia traffics from the cellular network, but also improves the user experience by eliminating download waiting time. To evaluate the performance gains of the converged network, we first develop a framework to mathematically model the converged network, the multimedia content characteristics and the mobile user behaviors. The improvement of the network capacity is then derived and quantified theoretically. Numerical results are also provided to show the significant performance advantages of the converged network over the cellular-only network.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115679167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For cellular networks, the base stations (BSs) account for more than 50 percent of the energy consumption of the networks. Therefore, reducing the power consumption of BSs is crucial to greening cellular networks. With the development of green energy technologies, BSs can be powered by green energy in order to reduce the on-grid power consumption, and subsequently reduce the carbon footprints. In this paper, we have proposed a distributed scheme to enable Green-energy Aware and Latency Aware (GALA) user-BS associations in heterogeneous cellular networks whose BSs are powered by both on-grid power and green energy. The GALA algorithm considers both the traffic delivery latency and the green energy generation rate in BSs for determining the user-BS association. We have proved that the GALA algorithm converges to the optimal solution which minimizes the summation of the weighted latency ratios of BSs. The simulation results show that the GALA algorithm enables the trade-off between the on-grid power consumption and the average traffic delivery latency, and saves a significant amount of on-grid power in heterogeneous cellular networks that are powered by both on-grid power and green energy.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115706488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Overall acceptability may be influenced by user expectations and context, and QoE includes complete end-to-end system effects. Radio access network quality measurements are usually enough to evaluate the user experience of voice services. In addition, the customer satisfaction of the packet data services also depends on the type of the user equipment (UE) and on the multimedia content characteristics. To evaluate the QoE, the paper analyzes the behavior of different types of user equipments related to voice and packet data traffic statistics on the radio access network by Telecom Italia. The analysis of some suitable Key Performance Indicators is shown. The performance of different user equipment types are monitored by joining the dropped call events with the radio link conditions, in terms of signal quality, signal strength, distance of mobile equipment from the serving cell. The relation of packet loss rate, latency and network quality are also evaluated with respect to the different user equipment categories analyzed (e.g. handset, smartphone, USB Modem, tablet) for data services based on the transmission control protocol (TCP). The results show that mobile terminals behave very differently from each other, affecting both the amount of voice dropped calls and packet data retransmission in different radio link conditions and consequently the user quality of experience.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"181 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115722454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, industrial field trials show rather disappointing throughput gains, whereby the major limiting factor is properly sharing channel state information. This so-called limited feedback problem has been considered in many recent papers in context of CoMP under the assumptions: 1) infinite SNR regime, 2) no user selection and 3) ideal link adaption; rendering the analysis overly optimistic. In this paper we make a step forward towards a more realistic assessment of the limited feedback problem by introducing an improved metric for the performance evaluation, which better captures the throughput degradation. We obtain the relevant scaling laws (lower and upper bounds) and show that they are, at finite SNR, fundamentally different from existing ones. Moreover we provide a robust iterative interference alignment algorithm and corresponding feedback strategies achieving the optimal scaling laws. The main idea is that instead of sending the complete channel matrix to each base station each user fixes a receive filter in each iteration and feeds back a quantized version of the effective channel. Finally we underline the findings with simulations for the proposed system.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123081198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it may suffer from some emerging threats such as Interest Flooding Attacks (IFA), which means corresponding security management mechanisms need to be designed to improve its security. In this paper, we focus on the IFA that can severely consume the memory resource for the Pending Interest Table (PIT) of each involved NDN router by flooding large amount of malicious Interests with spoofed names. To loosen the stress of PIT attacked by IFA, we propose an approach called Disabling PIT Exhaustion (DPE) to divert all the malicious Interests out of PIT, by directly recording their state information (e.g., incoming interface) in the name of each malicious Interest rather than PIT, as well as introducing a packet marking scheme to enable Data packet forwarding without the help of PIT. DPE can be considered as a security management mechanism for the emerging NDN architecture, which aims at reducing memory resource consumption for each NDN router. Moreover, we present an in-depth evaluation on DPE, via extensive simulations under realistic users' behavior model. Simulation results show DPE can significantly mitigate the damage effect of IFA on exhausting PIT's memory resource. To the best of our knowledge, DPE is the first attempt to design a security management mechanism embedding with the idea “decoupling malicious Interests from PIT” to counter IFA.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"5 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116806713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This may lead to system inefficiencies as well as bad coexistence with networks using different CP settings. In this paper, we propose the usage of zero-tail DFT-s-OFDM signals as a solution for decoupling the radio numerology from the expected channel characteristics. Zero-tail DFT-s-OFDM modulation allows to adapt the overhead to the estimated delay spread/propagation delay. Moreover, it enables networks operating over channels with different characteristics to adopt the same numerology, thus improving their coexistence. An analytical description of the zero-tail DFT-s-OFDM signals is provided, as well as a numerical performance evaluation with Monte Carlo simulations. Zero-tail DFT-s-OFDM signals are shown to have approximately the same Block Error Rate (BLER) performance of traditional OFDM, with the further benefit of lower out-of-band (OOB) emissions.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121067763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
