Transit cars will employ AC drives and multiple microprocessor controlled systems instead of contactors, resistors, and relays. A new technology signal system based on communications based train control (CBTC) technology is also being introduced for long term deployment over the complete subway system. Microprocessors will replace traditional track circuits and wayside color light signals and tripstops. Signal equipment will now be installed onboard the cars, responsibility for the signal system will now be spread between two NYCT Divisions. In December 1998, New York City Transit signed a contract with Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. for R143 B Division transit cars. The contract was fast track with the first eight cars delivered in early 2001. Provisions were made for space, cables and wiring, and system functions to make the cars CBTC ready. The cars will enter passenger service for a period before the CBTC equipment is delivered, and the latter is intended to be \"plugged-in\" to the R143s as simply as possible. The CBTC/R143 integration process was complex and initially a common set of interfaces was developed with three short-listed proposers' systems. Upon award of the CBTC contract in December 1999, the interface was consolidated and finalized. The concept of developing detailed mechanical, electrical, and functional interfaces prior to the completion of the preliminary design of the CBTC was a challenge at best. Coupled with the tight R143 delivery schedule, there was pressure to make detailed engineering decisions at a very early stage of CBTC system design.","PeriodicalId":174709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE/ASME Joint Railroad Conference (Cat. Light rail vehicles (LRV) will share Conrail freight trackage through 85% of the 34 mile long route; this will be one of the few freight and light rail shared traffic lines in North America. The train control system for the Southern New Jersey Light Rail Transit System (SNJLRTS) will be used by both LRT and Conrail freight trains. Significant differences in operating characteristics of light rail vehicles and freight trains, such as maximum allowed speed, length and weight of the consist, and brake rate, constitute technical problems that require unique solutions to assure effective and safe traffic for both types of vehicles. The SNJLRTS will employ a relatively simple signaling system that includes three-aspect automatic block signaling and automatic trip stops at the signals with red aspects. Block signal design will be one of the major issues associated with mixed traffic. The rules for conventional block signal design will be only partially applicable for SNJLRTS. In order to comply with internal NJT practices and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rules, and at the same time fulfil contract specifications requirements, unique solutions must be found for certain block signal design elements. The logic of grade crossing warning functioning will be another critical issue for mixed traffic. This paper describes the technical solutions that reconcile the LRT and freight train operational differences while designing the SNJLRTS train control system.","PeriodicalId":174709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE/ASME Joint Railroad Conference (Cat. A three-step process was developed to arrive quickly at an optimum solution that provided lower stresses. At all stages weight reduction and the ability to manufacture were considered. The initial criteria were established by creating and analyzing several designs in which significant dimensional attributes were varied. During the second stage, we concentrated on those variables that resulted in reduced thermal stresses. The third stage involved final optimization wherein the combined effects of thermal and mechanical loads were evaluated. ANSYS 5.6.1 Finite Element software was used.","PeriodicalId":174709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE/ASME Joint Railroad Conference (Cat. We then expand the model to include buried metallic structures in the vicinity of the track using field theory to calculate the potential gradients generated due to flow of rail current and show that a potential difference experienced by a crossing or paralleling underground structure that traverses these gradients could cause stray current corrosion. We discuss the limitations of these models with the actual conditions such as nonuniform back-to-earth resistances, nonuniform soil resistivities. In the second part, we look at the stray current model when there are inadvertent breakdowns in the track insulation. The points of rail insulation breakdown may be approximated using the spherical ground electrode model and equipotential lines to illustrate the flow of stray current. Common grounding of the substation negative bus, substation AC ground mat and electric utility neutral are examined and discussed.","PeriodicalId":174709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE/ASME Joint Railroad Conference (Cat. Although US bogie manufacturers offer a variety of designs to vehicle builders, central to all of these bogie designs are the nonlinear frictional characteristics inherent in the bogie suspension. These characteristics derive from the dynamic behaviour of the friction wedges. Friction wedges are small triangular metal elements that are held into position via spring loading, and function as the primary mechanism for vibrational energy dissipation between the bolster and side frame. Therefore, as a prerequisite to obtaining a realistic dynamic model of a typical three-piece bogie, an accurate model of the load-sensitive behaviour of these dry friction devices is required. Using design specifications from US bogie manufacturers and experimental data from the open literature, a load-dependent friction wedge model was developed using the ADAMS/View environment. After this model was validated against theoretical benchmarks, it was imported into an ADAMS/Rail vehicle model of a typical North American three piece bogie. The results of model development for both the friction wedge and three-piece bogie are presented, as well as ADAMS/Rail simulation results of the bogie dynamics under a variety of operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":174709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE/ASME Joint Railroad Conference (Cat. The new locomotive will fulfil the requirements of the US authorities and considers the particular demands of US railroads. The presentation describes the technology of the locomotive with respect of trucks, carbody, electric propulsion system, brakes, control system and auxiliaries. It is shown, that the basic technology used in Europe can be adapted for US requirements. Furthermore, the experience with the basic locomotive class 101 and locomotives with similar technology is demonstrated. We have developed and are now using a facility management system that has the functions of ledger management and automatic drawing. Although we have proposed to use portable terminals for this system as a means to collect inspection data, they are not used as expected due to the difficulties of operation and carrying. Therefore, we paid attention to i-mode cellular phones and studied the possibility to use them in place of the existing portable terminals for the facility management system. This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of i-mode cellular phone, proposes to use it as an effective means for data collection, and reports about a trial development.","PeriodicalId":174709,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE/ASME Joint Railroad Conference (Cat.
