Currently, methods available for cataract detection are based on the use of either fundus camera or DSLR camera; both are very expensive. The main motive behind this work is to develop an inexpensive, robust and convenient algorithm which in conjugation with suitable devices will be able to diagnose the presence of cataract from the true color images of eye. An algorithm is proposed for Cataract Screening based on texture features: uniformity, intensity and standard deviation. These features are first computed and mapped with diagnostic opinion by the eye expert to define the basic threshold of screening system later tested on real subjects in eye clinic.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114212225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the ECG signals are low frequency and very low amplitude signals, they suffer from loss of information due to noise picked up from the EMI, motion of a body and capacitive loading of the probes. A design has been discussed in this work with simulations carried out by modelling the human body as load and electrical modelling of electrodes have been done. The simulations have been performed on TINA and results show a very promising characteristic of removal of baseline wander and noise and random noise introduced due to EMI.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125110708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To protect the connected equipment in the generation system, over-current and differential frequency relays, are used. Massive current flow and frequency change in the power line affect the equipments. Over-current relay and differential frequency relay are used to solve these problems. A study to protect this circuit topology is carried out, performing the simulation on MATLAB®. The proposed scheme protects the power system from over-current, and frequency variation. Meanwhile, the attention is paid that the incoming and outgoing frequencies difference should be maintained to zero. During the simulation, standard values of generator speed, wind speed, and pitch angle are used. The proposed scheme is found suitable for over current and heavy frequency variation with better operating time.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117230554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The magnitude and phasor of these quantities are used in implementing different relays for power system protection, monitoring, control, communicating data to central control station, data logging and self-diagnosis. Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is a coordinated measurement technology which provides wide area monitoring, protection and controlling of system. Since electric distribution networks are widely extended, control systems can carry out measurements of electrical quantities simultaneously. A sequential implementation of PMU based on microprocessor/ microcontroller increases the time taken in computing the results and it affects the efficiency of the controlling system. In this paper the pipelined architecture based PMU is implemented on Field Programmable Gate Arrays, which senses-processes-communicates at the same time. The PMU is implemented on GENESYS XILINX VIRTEX 5 XC5VLX50T FPGA board with communication facility. Recommended Minimum Specific Global Navigation Satellite System (GPRMC) header is obtained by connecting Global Positioning System (GPS) to the PMU. Results are displayed on hyper terminal with help of Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter (UART) interface.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116673126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A question arises: Can beauty be learnt by machines? Every individual have different concept of facial beauty. Somebody can be attracted by someone but might not be by another person. In recent past, many psychologists, neurologists and other scientists have done tremendous work in this area. This work presents a study on the facial attractiveness in a machine learning context. Various techniques applied on SCUT-FBP facial images dataset for learning the facial attractiveness. From the results, we showed that facial beauty is a universal concept that a machine can learn. A model is designed that learns from the facial images with their attractiveness ratings and produced human like evaluation of attractiveness ratings. We extracted features from images and normalized all the features value. After that we proposed some techniques of machine learning like Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Decision tree and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). An accuracy of 80% was obtained using KNN and 86% was obtained using ANN for multiclass classification. Accuracies of 61% and 62% were reported by SVM using linear kernel and RBF kernel respectively. These accuracies were obtained for multiclass classification. We also evaluated accuracy for binary class to reduce the effect of non-uniformity of data.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127499637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet it is one of the many fields which is in dire need of technological intervention. Latest technologies like the “infrastructure of information society” Internet of Things are yet to reach the Agriculture market. This is especially so in the case of less affluent countries like India where agriculture is still a gamble for the farmer. By implementing intelligent monitoring techniques and enabling automatic sensing of the conditions on a farm, the farmer can ensure that the best possible practices are used in her/his farm and thus ensure maximum productivity and yield. The paper discusses a cost effective system that receives data about the conditions surrounding the plants from various sensors in the system. The sensors used are DHT-11, SHT-11 and a ‘Height Measuring Apparatus’ consisting of magnetic switches on a vertical pipe and a Neodymium magnet piece. The data “compiled” are the current height of the plant, the moisture content in the soil, the temperature of the soil, the atmospheric temperature and relative humidity. The system sends notifications to the farmer at regular intervals. The actions taken by the farmer upon receiving the processed data is also recorded. The corresponding effects on the plant growth are then “detected”. This process can make the farmers aware of the impact their actions have on the plants, giving them an analysis about both the needs of the plant as well as the “fruit” of their actions.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"278 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123429950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is considered to be the one of the reason which affected the natural rubber productivity from Indian plantations. Even though cheap unskilled labors are available, they cannot be used for tapping by using the traditional V groove knife or Jabong knife. So this paper discusses about a low semi automatic rubber tree tapping machine (SART) which can be used by an unskilled labor to perform tapping on the rubber tree by preserving the tree health. The proposed machine is fabricated and tested on the tree. Also a comparative study is made on the effort required to operate the machine with the traditional tapping knives used for the purpose.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122936857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, dependence on natural energy resources, such as solar, wind is increased. These are connected to the main grid to meet the increased electricity demand and the power system is transformed in to a hybrid power system (HPS). Battery storage (BS) is also required along with these energy sources, due to their uncertain behavior. In this paper, wind energy (WE) along with BS and small hydro plant (HP) is connected to main grid to feed a constant electrical load for study period of one day with one hour dispatch interval. An optimal capacity of BS is determined to maximize the revenue of the system, for two different moderate wind speed scenarios using artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC).
