With the continuous and dedicated efforts by many researchers, application of BCI technology has not only proved significant for disabled but also for healthy individuals. Here we have discussed about one such well known BCI paradigm i.e. P300 speller. The conventional P300 speller is actually based on detecting P300 signal through EEG recordings, which is supposed to occur when the subject sees targeted character or task. In this paper, we have discussed about the ensemble machine learning approach to detect the P300. Our main objective is to discuss the significance of ensemble techniques to classify and predict Event Related Potential (ERP). We have used two such well known ensemble techniques; Random Forest (RF) and Ensemble Support Vector Machines (ESVM). Finally we obtained ceiling level classification accuracy with minimum number of trials. These proposed techniques attest the viability for possible BCI applications using simple ERPs.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129644919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It incorporates Genetic algorithm and Simulated Annealing together in Evolutionary Computational part and quantum concepts that are quantum gate, superposition of states in the improvement of initial population. In this paper HECA has been tested on 6 popular benchmark functions and compared with other algorithms reported in literature. HECA has the strong capability to explore the nonlinear search regions and it is a step forward in the area of hybrid stochastic search. HECA is applied on a real world application of cattle feed optimization for local Dairy. The objective of the present algorithm is to find minimum cost diet from the set of available ingredients while improving the quality of feed. The feed mix obtained from the present algorithm is compared with that of a local Dairy. It is found that the results obtained from the present algorithm are favourable and useful for dairy cattle feed planning and cost optimization.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127430567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes and demonstrate an economical and easy to use arduino based controlled irrigation system. The designed system deals with various environmental factors such as moisture, temperature and amount of water required by the crops using sensors like water flow sensor, temperature sensor and soil moisture sensor. Datas are collected and received by arduino which can be linked to an interactive website which show the real time values along with the standard values of different factor required by a crop. This allows user to control irrigation pumps and sprinklers from far distance through a website and to meet the standard values which would help the farmer to yield maximum and quality crops. Studies conducted on laboratory prototype suggested the designed system to be applicable which can be implemented.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128887345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In other words, an aggregate harmonic loss sensitivity factor, i.e., including fundamental component is used to decide the prospective optimal locations by using DSA to obtain the maximum power loss reduction as well as Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The effectiveness of the proposed methodology has been investigated on IEEE 13-bus radial distribution system. By obtaining the optimal size and location of shunt capacitors from the proposed methodology yields in minimum aggregate power losses including from various harmonics as well as fundamental power frequency. The results has also been compared and found to be better over literature work, where Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) was used to obtain capacitor placement while maintain THD within acceptable range of standards.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130713799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work provides a model of a smart greenhouse, which helps the farmers to carry out the work in a farm automatically without the use of much manual inspection. Greenhouse, [1], [2] being a closed structure protects the plants from extreme weather conditions namely: wind, hailstorm, ultraviolet radiations, and insect and pest attacks. The irrigation of agriculture field is carried out using automatic drip irrigation, which operates according to the soil moisture threshold set accordingly so as optimal amount of water is applied to the plants. Based on data from soil health card, proper amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other minerals can be applied by using drip fertigation techniques. Proper water management tanks are constructed and they are filled with water after measuring the current water level using an ultrasonic sensor. Plants are also provided the requisite wavelength light during the night using growing lights. Temperature and air humidity are controlled by humidity and temperature sensors and a fogger is used to control the same. A tube well is controlled using GSM [3] module (missed call or sms). Bee-hive boxes are deployed for pollination and boxes are monitored using ultrasonic sensors to measure honey and send mails to the buyers when they are filled. Further, the readings collected from storage containers are uploaded to cloud service (Google drive) and can be forwarded to an e-commerce company.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130982594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The modular approach gives the advantage to extract class specific features for the classifier, which helps to outperform the classical convolutional neural networks. Moreover, the heterogeneous nature of modular DNN provides the economy in the overall architecture and also enables to extract region specific features which further contribute to higher accuracy of detection. Extensive simulation studies were performed using benchmark dataset DIARETDB0 and results show that the proposed approach performs better or equivalently good than the other standard approaches.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131542898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to improve the safety of visually challenged users and enhance their awareness of their surroundings while navigating in outdoor environments, a smart device is needed. In this paper, a smart walking cane for the visually challenged has been presented. The proposed device can detect obstacles as well as terrain changes in the user's path. A conventional walking cane forms the main frame of the device, upon which ultrasonic sensors are mounted at appropriate locations to detect obstacles, steps and pits in the path of the user. Additionally, a provision to indicate the presence of puddles and slippery surfaces in the user's path has also been included in the device. The presence of these obstacles is notified to the user by the means of voice recordings played via earphones or through haptic feedback, provided using vibration motors placed on the hand support of the stick. The smart walking cane further employs GPS and GSM modules which can be used to send a distress signal to the user's kin along with the user's location upon being activated by a simple press of a button. The device is lightweight and is powered by a rechargeable battery. The overall design of the device ensures accuracy, energy efficiency and easy portability.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132688514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its increasing trends overcome the effect of depleting fossil fuels and increasing electricity demand. The energy scheduling of microgrid is an open issue in current power system industry and it is a difficult task. This paper presents the economic energy scheduling of a microgrid, consisting of wind turbine (WT) and photovoltaic (PV) with battery energy storage (BES) and diesel engines (DEs). A cost minimization objective is formulated considering (i) costs of elements of microgrid, (ii) incentive cost of BES and (iii) the main grid energy exchange (import/ export) cost. System problem is simulated on MATLAB® for a dispatch period of one day taking one hour as an interval. Spinning reserve constraint is handled in detailed in this problem. Artificial bee colony (ABC) is applied to perform the economic scheduling in microgrid. Three cases, i.e., microgrid without DE, microgird with three DEs, and microgrid with DEs and reserve constraint are compared and concluded that microgrid with DE gives minimum cost even though considering 5% of load reserve constraint compare to the case without DEs.","PeriodicalId":174678,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133291810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
