After the examination of some critical issues of Facebook in a learning framework, we analyze data on the usage the page (total reach and number of engaged users) and the results of a survey taken by 217 students. Their appreciation for Facebook in such a context is stark and improvements of qualitative aspects of academic performance are perceived. Studying a subset of data tagged with ID information, we also investigate the quantitative performance (i.e., grades) in connection with the level of Facebook activity and usefulness. We find some evidence of positive correlation of grades and several variables. This is at odds with other studies, where active users experienced poorer performance when the use of Facebook is not related to academic work.","PeriodicalId":174643,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship Educator: Courses","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123900030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It covers the period from spring 2005 through August 2009. This drama ends in a complete reversal, the acquisition of Porsche by Volkswagen. The case includes such topics as options, disclosure regulations, short sales, corporate governance, corporate strategies, and family owned firms. It exemplifies the impact of an economic culture, especially that of stakeholder versus shareholder economies. This case material is unique since it contrasts these two perspectives, thus illustrating that there are multiple points of view behind apparent 'facts.'The material consists of the case study and a separate teacher's manual also available on SSRN (http://ssrn.com/abstract=1996440).","PeriodicalId":174643,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship Educator: Courses","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127131494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Baskerville","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.1526846","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.1526846","url":null,"abstract":"IFRS are cultural artefacts. They are spreading worldwide, often under the benign encouragement by entities such as the World Bank, and possibly through regulators suggesting the advantages of competitive innovation. But the spread of IFRS is not like the spread of muskets two centuries earlier. They do not similarly offer a prohibitive advantage to new adopters, but have to be gently harnessed to each local legal and professional habitus. Once this happens, IFRS are not the same worldwide. Think of McDonalds hamburgers. When eating hamburgers in Shanghai or Siena, what I am offered is different: there is no Kiwiburger (with its typical beetroot) over there. IFRS, being cultural artefacts, are transformed to meet local ‘consumer demand’ (user needs) e.g. they may be used for a selective number of entities, or every entity (as happened in NZ from 2007: including a charity, sports club, the national Government, or a local city council). Plus, a translator of IFRS into the local language is more than a shape-shifter or skin-changer (as Tolkien described Beorn): languages embody different ways of thinking. You would be very unwise to attempt to understand the differential reception or impact of IFRS with a largely discredited quantitative approach such as Hofstede’s cultural indices. A nation state is rarely one culture, and yet IFRS become culturally embedded.More and more, quality research as reported in this Handbook reflects that the impact of IFRS in share markets worldwide depends on local enforcement and monitoring. Even in one small share market, IFRS is not a package deal. It is a number of standards applied to a greater or lesser degree to variety of transactions in a diversity of companies, monitored by numerous auditors. The auditor might use the English version of the IFRS or IAS, or they might use the local version. Roll your sleeves up and talk to a good number of local auditors and preparers. Understand their understandings. We need such research. Here’s another metaphor: when you have an X-ray the utility or benefit it of it depends on the expertise of those interpreting the picture of what lies within. At first, the use of X-ray (Roentgen Rays) had some disastrous side effects (childhood leukaemia in babies X-rayed in utero) because the exact impact was not well understood. As with looking at an X-ray, financial reports based on IFRS have to be examined with an expert gaze to understand what lies beneath, or within the entity, as seen in its financial report. World-wide we are all learning what can be seen and what can’t. We cannot stop another financial crisis occurring with IFRS adoption. But we might reduce its disastrous impact with better educated and more expert users of IFRS (preparers and auditors). I hope you are on the path towards developing such an expert eye, and that this Handbook will assist. This Handbook has been revised extensively since its first publication in December 2009. Our estimate of the lower bound on the market valuation of iPhone is fairly high, at minimum 30 billion U.S. (event day) dollars. We find that patentable technology explains about 25% of that total value. We also find a weak negative reaction among Apple’s rivals to the news about iPhone but no significant reaction to the publication of patent documents concerning iPhone can be observed. The evidence suggests that the value of iPhone primarily stems from Apple’s management and marketing abilities and efforts rather than from underlying \"hard\" technologies and intellectual property.","PeriodicalId":174643,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship Educator: Courses","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114784436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is, therefore, natural to consider students as the primary resource of future entrepreneurs. To this end, our paper carries out an empirical research amongst females in their first year of Business Studies in Dubai, providing a descriptive analysis of students’ entrepreneurial intentions.Design/methodology/approach - We conducted a primary survey amongst female first year Business Studies students in Dubai. A Five-Point Likert scale was used for each question and mean scores were generated from the ranks.Findings - Our results show that the young female students in Dubai are positive regarding the role that universities can play in fostering their interest towards entrepreneurship, both for their education as well as the incubator for their new venture. Practical implications - We found significant scope for promotion of entrepreneurship in the education system in the United Arab Emirates. Emirati females students showed a high inclination to become entrepreneurs provided they underwent a specialized entrepreneurial Business Program. More attention is required by policy makers and higher education authorities to foster ‘hands-on’ Entrepreneurship as a part of Business Studies Program.Originality/value - Both academia and practitioners have increased their efforts in promoting entrepreneurial mindset within the society. However only a few studies have investigated entrepreneurial attitudes amongst students; even fewer have considered entrepreneurial intentions of females and no studies have been conducted in the Middle East. Our research fills this gap.","PeriodicalId":174643,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship Educator: Courses","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130919745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since 2008, Directorate General of Higher Education (DGHE) has established students’ entrepreneurship program by offering various grants for facilitating the students to start business. Such program has a purpose to enhance the effectiveness of many kinds of programs related to entrepreneurship such as internship program, entrepreneurship lecturing, students’ creativity program, and the like. These grants were offered to private and public universities but with different policies. This paper is aimed to describe how the government policy - and the coordinator for regional private Higher Education (HE) with their role-develop entrepreneurship program for private higher educations, how the entrepreneurship program executes and, specifically in East Java: Surabaya and its entire, key success factors, and the effect of this program on creating entrepreneurship academic atmosphere and spirit, and also on creating young educated entrepreneurs. Based on 15 university entrepreneurship program reports - involving 24 entrepreneur projects - it can be formulated that there are three alternative models for developing entrepreneurship in private higher educations. In general, it can be concluded that this program can generate some fruitful benefits not only for HE institutions, but also for students as well for small-medium enterprises (SMEs) as the partners of this program.","PeriodicalId":174643,"journal":{"name":"Entrepreneurship Educator: Courses","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115151868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
