This system can be also relatively compact compared with other light sources (synchrotrons, gas puff plasma pinch generators). To realize an x-ray source of high average power enough for industrial applications, we are developing a high-repetition-rate pulse Nd:YAG slab laser system for x-ray driver. Its final goal is to reach pulse energy of 1 J, duration time of 10 ns, up to few hundreds pulse repetition rate, and high average power more than 100 W with a tabletop size. The laser amplifier system is illustrated by Fig. 1. The optical bench size is 1.2 X 2.4 m. In this system, a zig-zag slab geometry, imaging relay optics, and a SBS phase conjugation mirror have been used to reduce thermal wavefront distortion and other thermal effects that are very serious at high average output power level.' Two slab amplifiers were used, each of which included a Brewster-angle cut Nd:YAG slab (6.4 X 25 X 183 mm) pumped by two Xe flash lamps (10F6). Ring-resonator like amplifying optical pass was successfully chosen in this system to accommodate all of the amplifier heads, four-pass angular multiplexing, and imaging relays. Saturation single-pass small signal gain of the amplifier has been measured to be 6. We usually operated each amplifier at gain 3 in our experiment. Fluorinert (FC-75) was filled in the SBS mirror cell and its maximum reflectivity reached more than 80%. With this laser system maximum pulse energy of 0.72 J has been obtained with an oscillator output energy of 1 mJ. Maximum pulse repetition rate we tested so far was 160 pps and beam divergence was 0.6 mrad in X and Y-directions at this rate. When the focused beam of high-repetitionrate laser pulses heats metal targets, damage on x-ray optical components resulting from the plasma debris would not be negligible. For 100 microwatt powers at the surface, we were to obtain image information at depths 2.5 mm, enabling imaging through the entire rat cortex. Figure 1 shows a lateral-medial B-scan of a healthy rat neocortex at the midpoint taken with use of 1300 nm light. The normal cortex (here approximately 2.1 mm in thickness) is a sklayered structure defined by the morphology and density of the neurons in each layer. While we are not able to differentiate specific layers in the cortex, the cortexwhite matter boundary is clearly visible. Figure 2 displays the lateral-medial B-scan in the parietal region from a rat with cortical dysplasia. Cortical dysplasia is manifested by a thinning of the cortex, to 0.5 mm, and a loss of differentiation between the cortex layers. The hippocampus, heterotopic neurons, and the boundary between hippocampus and ventricle are also visible in Fig. 2. Additional structures have also been detected in OCT scanning, including the dura matter, blood vessels, and artificially produced hemorrhages. Our ChG samples are fabricated by thermal vaporization. They are well adapted for waveguiding applications in the infrared band, having high optical quality and thickness (d)varyingfromd= 1.1 tod=2.5km.Forthe holographic recording, the 488 nm line of a cw argon laser is used as the excitation wavelength. This wavelength is near the bandgap (hg = 527 nm or E, 2.35 eV) for our ChG films. The total power ofthe two writing beams is 21 mW on an illumination surface of 4 X 4.5 mm2. The study of exposed ChG film surface demonstrates clear relief modulation gratings via photoexpansion. The photomodulation of the thin ChG film's thickness does not require additional processing, thus is real time and self developing. The growth of relief gratings amplitude is almost the same for used SiO, and oxidized silicon wafer substrates (Fig. 1). The further dynamics of surface modulation are not monotone, which is similar to the typical kinetics of holographic diffraction efficiency detected earlier in ChG materials. This and some other experimental data indicate a possible significant role of surface gratings in the holographic efficiency. The recorded relief gratings are stable and show large memory effect of at least several months (Fig. 2). Heating of the sample above T = 140 OC (the glass transition temperature is Tg = 180 \"C) erases efficiently the relief modulation.
