The fundamental absorption band of carbon dioxide at 4.3 p is one possible target for practical devices based on such a laser source. In this work we demonstrate, for the first time to our howl edge, the production of4.3 p radiation by DFG in PPLN waveguide structures. Domain reversal with periods between 17 p and 21 p was accomplished through the application of a high-voltage pulse to photolithographically patterned wafers of 0.5-mm-thick LiNbO,., Waveguides were formed by proton exchange for 24 h at 17OoC followed by annealing for 20 h at 340°C. DFG of two cw lasers was carried out at room temperature. Tunable radiation at h, = 715-840 nm was provided by a Ti:Sapphire laser. Fixed-frequency radiation at A, = 1009 nm was provided by a grating-stabilized tunable diode laser. The combined beams from these two lasers were focussed using a 20X microscope objective into the waveguides. The generated mid-IR radiation at X, was collimated with a CaF, lens, separated from the input beams with a dichroic filter, and measured with an indium antimonide detector. In some experiments the combined beams were focussed into the bulk of the sample with an f = 20 cm lens. Figure 1 shows the generated power as a function of X, in a 10-p-wide waveguide with a quasi-phase-matched (QPM) period of 18.3 p. The phase-matching curve deviates from the ideal sinc-squared curve seen in bulk DFG because of the excitation of multiple waveguide modes. For example, calculations suggest that high-order harmonic generation with a 5 fs pulse would result in soft x-ray pulse with a duration on the order of 100 attoseconds. While 10 fs pulses are readily available at low energy (nJ) directly from Kerr-lens mode-locked laser oscillators, gain narrowing and high-order phase compensation have limited the pulse duration from ultra-short pulse laser amplifiers to about 20 fs. The route we are pursuing toward the goal of energetic sub-10 fs pulses is to compress amplified 20 fs pulses after self-phase modulation in a noble-gas-filled hollow-core dielectric waveguide, first used by Nisoli et al [1] for much longer input pulses. Along with the development of this technique, we have adapted the transient-grating frequency-resolved optical gating (TG-FROG) technique [2] for ultrashort, wide bandwidth pulse characterization. Since the guided pulse spectrum is broadened under the simultaneous action of several linear and nonlinear processes, including self-phase modulation, linear dispersion and self-steepening, the use of the FROG technique provides information necessary for optimal compression. Perhaps more important is that such coherent detection dramatically broadens the scope of experiments and applications using these pulses. For example, full characterization of amplitude and phase is crucial for control of the complex field profile.","PeriodicalId":173652,"journal":{"name":"CLEO '97., Summaries of Papers Presented at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127243281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent experiments in high harmonic generation (HHG) have demonstrated that with sufficiently short laser pulses (-20 fs), laser energies of 2-10 mJ can be used to generate very high-order harmonics, with photon energy up to 240 eV.2,3 However, to date, the lasers used to generate very high-order harmonics have typically been low-repetition-rate (10 Hz) systems. A kHz repetition-rate laser with sufficient peak power for high-harmonic generation would result in a 100 times increase in x-ray flux, with vastly improved signal-tonoise ratios. In addition, other processes such as low-order harmonic generation in gases4 become even more efficient with millijoules of laser energy. Thermal lensing is the main obstacle to scaling ultrafast Tisapphire systems to high average power, because the thermal time constant for sapphire is tens of milliseconds. If the focal length of the thermal lens is longer than the Rayleigh range in a focused beam, as it is in oscillators and low average power amplifiers ( < O S mJ compressed), the lensing effect is not ~ t r o n g . ~ However, with the larger beam sizes found in power amplifiers, thermal lensing compensation is critical. We have developed a Tisapphire amplifier system that generates a peak power of 0.125 TW, at 1-kHz repetition rate, with 2.5 mJ of energy, in a 20-fs pulse duration. The first stage is a ring multipass amplifier, which has been demonstrated previously.' It is pumped by 9 mJ from an intracavity doubled Nd:YLF laser (Quantronix 527). The second stage has a similar design to the first stage, and is pumped","PeriodicalId":173652,"journal":{"name":"CLEO '97., Summaries of Papers Presented at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115545847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A tilt of the plane mirror in combination with spectral filtering of the detector output allows isolation of the double-scattered component of the light signal. When the illuminating laser and the local oscillator beams are correctly mode matched, the intensity of this signal displays the factor-of-2 increase that denotes full coherent enhancement. This full enhancement is preserved for a wide range of mirror to phase-screen spacing, in contrast with earlier observations in which direct-detection techniques were used.","PeriodicalId":173652,"journal":{"name":"CLEO '97., Summaries of Papers Presented at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115576754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
