Translanguaging is mostly seen as an opportunity to build on multilingual speakers' full language repertoire in the classroom in order to make sense of the world around them. At the same time, translanguaging might be seen as a threat for heritage language survival because heritage languages are forced to immerse in the mainstream language(s). The authors observed pedagogical translanguaging practices in the AraNY János Hungarian Kindergarten and School (USA) to understand how English was used in teaching the heritage language and to discover how bridging existing language gaps between speakers worked in the practices of bilingual pedagogues. {"title":"EFL Learning Beyond the Wall with MALL","authors":"Mohialdeen Alotumi","doi":"10.4018/978-1-7998-2116-8.ch007","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4018/978-1-7998-2116-8.ch007","url":null,"abstract":"This chapter reports an exploratory study that examines Yemeni college students' perceptions of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), using their mobile phones, in their informal learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The sample population comprised 150 EFL college students. Data were obtained through a questionnaire based on technology acceptance model (TAM). The findings revealed that EFL college students had positive perceptions towards utilizing MALL for informal EFL learning. Most participants maintained positive perceptions on the two constructs of TAM: perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. They believed that utilizing MALL furthered their EFL learning. Intertextuality highlights the uncontested dialogicity of political discourse and takes it to the next level of decoding the speaker's message to the audience. By means of intertextuality, political leaders establish links with their audience outlining common values with the support of history, cultural traditions, and religion. The grid described here was developed with and for second-year students of English Translation at the University of Helsinki during the autumn terms of 2015 and 2016. This process and the results are described in the light of a pilot study conducted with the students.
