The same concept can be applied to the development of software and leads to a component oriented software design. This step towards composing services from existing parts rather than starting a complete development each time has been motivated by three main driving forces, especially in the telecommunications domain, i.e. time to market, cost reduction and customisations. These market drivers are general forces for component-oriented production and not specific for TINA and distributed systems. However, the authors have identified more detailed and specific problems made with their real TINA middleware implementation. The main problems can be categorized as follows: 1) Simple dependency: a component requires a feature of another component, 2) Version dependency: a component requires another component, but in a specific version, 3) Interoperability conflict: a component cannot be combined with another component, 4) Resource limitation: inside a node or a cluster, a number of resources are only available to a limited extent. Since the knowledge about all the relations and dependencies of the components is very complex it is obvious that it would be helpful to have tool support for the composition, configuration and installation tasks to be performed. This could ensure that the same problem cannot arise twice, since the knowledge is kept reproducibly in the tool.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. Mobility in this context is the ability to transfer a session from one terminal to another without disrupting the service. The design, implementation and example of use of a \"mobility-aware\" TINA distributed processing environment (DPE) is detailed in the paper. The DPE is built over commercial software products and offers two basic facilities from which TINA services can be built: life-cycle and stream facilities. Life-cycle facilities allow distributed objects to be deployed and managed transparently while stream facilities allow multimedia channels to be established among service components. Life-cycle facilities are implemented according to the reference model for open distributed processing (RM-ODP). Stream facilities are based on the Object Management Group's media streaming framework \"control and management of audio/video streams (A/V streams)\". Mobility in our DPE is implemented at the cluster level as prescribed by RM-ODP. An extension of the A/V streams framework is proposed in order to re-establish the media flows after cluster migration. Finally, a TINA-based mobile multimedia service is built over life-cycle and stream facilities using TINA service architecture concepts and guidelines.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. {"title":"A \"TINA light\" service architecture for the Internet-telecom scenario","authors":"R. Manione, P. In order to be able to provide services within this scenario, the service provider must provide himself with a platform, which effectively supports all the service aspects, from creation to deployment, to efficient execution, to the different areas of management. The service architecture (SA) and network resource architecture (NRA) issued by the TINA-C identify the elements of such a platform, for the purpose of achieving high generality and reusability of its components. However, within the service scenario of our interest, the TINA SA and NRA can be significantly simplified, for the purpose of achieving lower implementation efforts and higher run-time efficiency. On the other hand, issues related to the management of services, and particularly subscriber side service management have not yet been fully addressed by TINA-C. This paper presents a lightweight service architecture and a derived service platform, largely inspired by TINA SA, but with a number of simplifications/optimizations allowed for by the peculiarities of the Internet-telecommunications service scenario and by the chosen engineering environment. For this reason, such an architecture could be described as \"TINA light\", hence, \"Lite\", Within the Lite platform a real service has been implemented and deployed: a network centered Web call center, which we named WebCentric/sup R/; it is presently under commercial trial. Both service and management issues, including subscriber service management have been addressed and implemented.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. Therefore, reference points, i.e. interfaces via which applications in different administrative domains will interwork have to be specified and agreed upon. First specifications of such reference points have been produced by TINA-C. Building on the TINA-C achievements (especially the TINA Ret reference point), this paper presents an approach for a structured, modular, and dynamically adaptable composition of TINA interdomain reference points. It lays the groundwork for supporting business relationships between, for instance, retailers and service providers (e.g., RtR, 3ptSP) according to the TINA business model. It is expected that those relationships will evolve with a fast moving market characterized by short product cycles as on the Internet. On the other hand, market demands for a flexible provisioning of services lead to dynamically changing business relationships that require the frequent update of the application level contracts between cooperating domains during their operation.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. This paper describes the JilTel system that can be used to implement a new generation of multimedia networks that integrate the telephone network, CTI, video conferencing and the Internet. The system architecture leverages on the rapid advances that are being made in the Internet/intranet, telephone networks, video networks and distributed computing. Each of these three technology areas have their existing areas of strengths. Instead of treating these areas as separate communication islands, the architecture strives for systems that utilize the strengths from the various areas. The resulting solutions show new features and advantages as a result of incorporating technology from different areas.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. {"title":"TINA business model for UMTS: benefits and possible enhancements","authors":"C. Abarca, M. This will have to be done in a new, de-regulated environment, which will result in a clear split between service and connectivity provisioning. This means an important change with respect to second generation mobile systems. The TINA business model provides the right framework for the introduction of these new requirements. A clear separation between the provision of connectivity and services is the key point, and TINA reference points allow a roaming user to contract his services to a retailer, and use them while roaming in the serving network(s) (SN) of one or more connectivity providers (CPs). This paper proposes to enhance the TINA business model so that the case of roaming users is supported, by extending the role of the TINA broker with \"credit card company\", functionality. The paper presents a scenario that shows how all the specific requirements of a roaming user are met by this enhanced TINA business model.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. SATIN is a co-operative project between Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom. Its objective is to define and implement a prototype of a service platform that on the one hand is still based on current intelligent network (IN) architectures, while on the other hand it realizes concepts of TINA, thereby making use of modern software technologies. Consequently, the SATIN environment consists of traditional IN components, i.e., IN switches which are connected via a so-called adaptation unit to the TINA-based components realizing the service applications. In addition, motivated by problems of current IN systems, such as those encountered when trying to combine IN components of different vendors or to allow for an interworking between two different IN systems, SATIN aims at developing a service platform that supports interoperability. In the SATIN environment two service platforms are implemented, one at Deutsche Telekom's side and one at France Telecom's side. Service applications can be realized in a distributed way as the underlying platforms can interoperate.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. A federation is a peer-to-peer relationship between two or more parties involved in order to achieve a common goal. It is characterized by a community that includes all parties involved, a contract defining the terms of the relationship, and a policy to rule the relationship's lifecycle. Connectivity providers can federate within a layer network by mutually providing transport connectivity service through tandem connections in a portion of a layer network that belongs to the other provider. To cross technological boundaries connectivity providers have to setup an interworking unit between the involved layer networks. We recognize three different cases: federation at layer network level between connection-oriented layer networks, federation at layer network level between connection-less layer networks, and federation at connectivity level between any layer network. The current TINA NRA does not support federation between connection-less layer networks. Additionally federation at connectivity level is not solved yet. To support federation between connection-less layer networks we propose to modify the distribution of functionality over the components that support connection-less transport networks. Furthermore, we specify interfaces that are part of the layer network federation (LNFed) reference point. To support federation at connectivity level we specify dedicated interworking components. The interworking interfaces are part of the LNFed reference point.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat.
