The designed services impose a load on the distributed processing environment (DPE) and kernel transport network (kTN) that must be understood and controlled. Experience in intelligent networks supports this view. This paper presents two models that together bridge the conceptual separation between service provision and implementation, enabling load characterisation through simulation. The first model expresses traffic due to object interactions within a TINA environment. The second model presents a simplified representation of the TINA DPE and kTN, modelling TINA services running on an ORB in a distributed processing environment. Nevertheless, the framework is open for other similar standards. The work described here is based on concepts and implementations in an ATM environment. The extensive use of new OMG technologies such as the notification service and objects by value has significantly improved the elegance and efficiency of the framework architecture as well as the efficiency of the development process itself. In February 1999, a large team of researchers from six European public network operators completed a two year period of cooperative experiments on a TINA-based environment, called the EURESCOM Services Platform (ESP). This platform consists of a variety of CORBA implementations, hardware platforms, and operating system configurations. The team has developed various multimedia services based on a subset of TINA's service architecture. P715 has also investigated stream management to realize the binding of audio-visual systems on the ESP. The interface uses a subset of the OMG stream service specification. The binding objects are integrated into the ESP, taking into account the TINA and OMG models for stream management to set up point-to-point bindings (H.320 and H.323) as well as multi-party binding (H.323). At present, P715 is probably one of the most important TINA test beds running between several public network operators. P715 has proposed some modification of TINA's Ret reference point. A set of basic IDL interfaces for components in the user domain was defined and proposed for standardization within the TINA consortium. Furthermore, the experiences with the RtR/3Pty specification and implementation have been input into the appropriate TINA work group. Here, the solution is to reuse the IN to TINA migration approach. In this new architecture, media gateway controllers should be seen as the IP technology adaptation unit, which interface a call to the TINA session service. If the core service and its associated TINA interfaces have been correctly designed, the same service can be accessed from IN, from the VoIP gateways, with all the TINA facilities. The provision of these core services to the WWW is straightforward, as the Web offers a TINA-like configuration, i.e., direct interface between the end-user and the retailer. The key innovations are the implementation of specialized user agents and the extension of access sessions with retailer selection sequences. For example, efficient multi-point teleconferencing is realized by using multi-point control units as branch servers. HTTP-based file distribution becomes efficient by using mirror file servers as branch servers. We propose a multimedia session manager (MSM) as a network functional entity that manages resources of branch servers distributed in the network and present its design and implementation. MSM is designed with the session and resource concept which is quite comparable to the service session concept in the TINA service architecture. Hence, MSM can be considered as one implementation of the TINA's service architecture concept with the focus on the management of higher-layer resources, such as the MCU, for multi-point applications. The presented MSM achieves scalability through an implementation with distributed CORBA objects. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the similarities among multi-point applications using branch servers, it can be adapted easily to various network services. Hence, using MSM, we can rapidly create a new network service for a new multi-point application. Finally, we show examples of a network service using MSM. Such a network service reduces the ineffective use of network bandwidth and alleviates traffic concentration on a user (application service provider).
