Unfortunately, the TINA service architecture does not provide satisfactory solutions for supporting nomadic communication up to now. The paper compares two strategies for realizing nomadic communication in TINA-compliant networks. Following the first approach, each customer is associated with a home domain where customer-related resources like the user agent are executed. In the alternative approach, the resources are modeled as mobile agents that follow the customer through the fixed network part. The presented strategies are analyzed and compared in a large-scale scenario using simulations. These simulations are based on a mathematical model that considers the movement and call behavior of customers. One of the most popular services of the Internet is the World Wide Web (WWW). It may be expected that the Web will be used to provide more sophisticated services, e.g., video on demand. Customers will be prepared to pay for such services, because of the exclusive content and the quality of the (broadband) transport network needed to transfer the information. Consequently, we need a way to manage these services, without violating the ease of use provided by current WWW. In this paper we present a solution based on TINA's business model. We introduce the value added Web (VAW), which is an integration of the WWW with TINA service management. This combination adds the benefits of the TINA business model to the WWW. A VAW session appears as a normal WWW session, except that it allows charging for specific content and the setup of connections with an agreed quality of service. The VAW business model assumes that users only have a direct relation with a retailer and that the retailer is responsible for charging. The situation will certainly not improve in the future unless the capabilities of the service creation environments are enhanced and the service creation is simplified. The ACTS Project TOSCA (TINA open service creation architecture), proposed a novel approach that facilitates rapid service creation and allows this task to be performed by less-technically oriented people. The TOSCA approach assumes that for a certain class of services, a flexible software framework is developed. The architecture of TOSCA frameworks follows the TINA principles. A framework is specialised and parameterised by so-called paradigm tools to create particular services. This paper describes how the TOSCA approach should be scaled up to meet the objectives of service creation on an industrial scale. For this purpose, a comprehensive set of development processes has been defined. The paper outlines a general architecture of the processes and discusses in more details the framework and service development processes. Lago","doi":"10.1109/TINA.1999.789972","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/TINA.1999.789972","url":null,"abstract":"The VITAL (Validation of Integrated Telecommunication Architectures for the Long-Term) project has defined, implemented and demonstrated an open distributed telecommunication architecture (ODTA) for deploying, managing and using a set of heterogeneous multimedia, multi-party, and mobility services. The architecture was based on the latest specifications released by TINA-C. The architecture was challenged in a set of trials by means of a heterogeneous set of applications. Some of the applications were developed within the project from scratch, while some others focused on integrating commercially available applications. The applications were selected in such a way as to assure full coverage of the architecture implementation and reflect a realistic use of it. The VITAL experience of refining and implementing TINA specifications and challenging the resulting platform by a heterogeneous set of services has proven the openness, flexibility and reusability of TINA. This paper describes the VITAL approach when choosing the different services and how they challenge and interact with the architecture, focusing especially on the service architecture and the Ret reference point definitions. The VITAL adjustments and enhancements to the TINA architecture are described. The development is done as a part of our project on software-based IN, named TOCTIS (Telecommunications Open Components for Tailored Intelligent Services). TOCTIS is a collection of IN functional entities (FEs) and other software components, which can be configured into variety of telecommunication-application servers. In TOCTIS, the Ret (retailer) reference point of a TINA business model is applied between the IN service subscriber and the IN service provider, where a consumer-retailer relationship is relevant. This paper mainly focuses on the access session part of the Ret, and identifies the diversion of our implementation from the current TINA-C specification and its reasons.
