During the MESH (Multimedia services on the Electronic Super Highway) project, a TINA-based platform for networked multimedia services has been developed and evaluated. This platform, referred to as the MESH platform, implements major parts of the TINA service architecture version 5.0 and the TINA network architecture version 3.0. In addition, several demonstration services such as multiparty high-quality audioconferencing and videoconferencing, shared database access and subscription management services have been created. To support the design and implementation of the MESH platform a DSC (distributed software component) framework has been developed. This framework is a generalization and implementation of the TINA computational object model and can also be applied outside the TINA domain. The DSC framework acts as a middleware layer, which shields component designers from many communication level details. A DSC can be mapped to a computational object or object group. DSC can be grouped to form compound components from sub-components that also can consist of multiple components, etc. In addition, the DSC framework addresses flexible configuration, dynamic component construction from (downloadable) sub-components, and dynamic interface instantiation. The MESH platform not only demonstrates the potential of TINA, but also reveals several weak areas. This paper describes the DSC approach, which we used to design and implement major parts of TINA, and our experiences with TINA.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. The approach is based around object-oriented software frameworks in SDL which are specialized towards services by means of graphical paradigm tools. Further, in TOSCA, the need for service interworking across service provider domains via federation has been recognized in order to allow users to join service sessions offered by providers they are not customers of. However, service interworking may cause undesired behavior-the so called service interaction phenomenon. This paper focuses on this issue and the underlying technology of the service creation approach with emphasis on how service federation has been implemented.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. Experiences have been gathered with prototypical implementations of the TINA architecture or parts of it. These implementations have shown the benefits of the generic concept of TINA for surrounding distributed telecommunication services. Most of the implementations use new object-oriented implementation languages like C++ or Java and communication architectures like CORBA. However, up to now the question of the performance and satiability of TINA-conforming implementations, i.e., their eligibility for real applications with thousands of simultaneously acting users, still remains. This paper reports performance test results made with the TINA platform implementation at GMD FOKUS, which is based on C++, CORBA and Windows NT. The tests concentrate on the access session part of the service architecture (including subscription). The paper discusses the basic concepts of a flexible performance test architecture for distributed systems based on CORBA technology. Concrete performance test results are given, analysed and evaluated.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. The existence of a generic service layer spanning over a set of heterogeneous networks promises several advantages for greater flexibility and efficiency in service development and deployment. TINA-C has established an architecture that has the potential and momentum to respond to such challenges. However, several adjustments and refinements to both the TINA network and services architectures appear necessary when addressing mobility. Mobile communications force the architect to re-think how to include both personal and terminal mobility in the architecture. In this paper we describe a way to apply the TINA network resource architecture (NRA) to terminal mobility and particularly to handover support. In addition, to exploit various wireless technologies in the delivery of multimedia services, we have developed a way of adapting mobile wireless networks so that some aspects of quality-of-service and traffic classes can be supported to an extent that would not be directly allowable by the underlying infrastructure. Our solution is based on the entity called the mobile network adapter (MNA) that tries to overcome the limitations due to lower layer protocol architectures, thanks to a smart, generic, mobility-aware management of resources. We also report design and real experience gained while implementing the TINA architecture on top of a telecommunications infrastructure, involving GSM, ATM and wireless LAN (WLAN) transport networks. Our studies and experiments revealed the need for introducing specific extensions/refinements to the NRA. These extensions/refinements represent the key contribution of this paper.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. To enable rapid deployment of new network services requires an open extendible network management model. The ReTINA ACTS (AC048) project seeks to answer the call for advanced network management building on the TINA connection management architecture (TINA-CMA) model. Emphasis within this paper is given to extending TINA-CMA to provide reservation and guarantee of network quality of service (QoS) and to the results obtained from our implementation of a QoS enhanced distributed connection management platform. Such a platform relies on the construction of a universal facade over heterogeneous switching models and of efficient control of the switching fabric. The paper discussed the issues with regard to ATM based networks and to analyse the suitability of current switch control protocols.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. This work demonstrates that they can benefit from the TINA (telecommunications information networking architecture) session concept, and especially from the service session. In detail, our objective was to study both the impact on, and the applicability of the TINA standard, whenever commercial applications are reengineered as TINA services. To achieve this objective, the work described here integrates two commercial conferencing applications in a TINA compliant telecommunication framework, and it extends the applications features to support distance education and traditional conference sessions in a flexible and intuitive way. This paper describes the solution implemented by the authors by showing its overall architecture, and the internal composition of each service component. For each of them, the internal behavior is mapped on a common example scenario. Also, the paper points out the problems encountered and the results achieved, by focusing especially on the enhancements brought by the integrated TINA/Internet solution, and on the benefits added by TINA. Some topics for further work are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. In 1998 it deployed connection manager (CM), a provisioning system in support of Sprint ION, which used the network resource architecture (NRA) as its software blueprint. The initial scope of CM includes provisioning of ATM and ATM-transported services of voice, IP, and frame relay. In this paper we focus on how CM used and extended the network topology configuration management (NTCM) model to represent physical resources, their capabilities, and the rules for their allocation. Our experience with the following concepts are explored: usage of administrative and management domains, modeling of capabilities of actual devices, support for bandwidth and address management, and representation of interworking functions between technologies.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat. A click-to-dial service and its extensions are the target of our study. These services are implemented while taking into account key TINA service architecture concepts in session management, information models and computational models and separation in service access and usage. We consider technical issues for building CT services on a distributed processing environment and attempt to find needed solutions. The results of our study show that the distributed processing technique, based on component concepts, makes it easy to build and extend CT services and also that the TINA service architecture is applicable to ordinary telephony services and advanced CT services.","PeriodicalId":173584,"journal":{"name":"TINA '99. 1999 Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Conference Proceedings (Cat.
