The basic CAN protocol suffers an inherent shortfall that it starves low priority nodes to transmit data due to its fixed priority (FP) scheme. The paper proposes implementation of two priority schemes to mitigate the same. In the first scheme, that implements Round-Robin(RR) priority, the access to the bus is given in cyclic fashion. Thus, giving opportunity for lower priority nodes to transmit. In the second scheme, that implements Least Recently Used (LRU) priority, priorities of the nodes are rotated depending on node's recent access of the bus, thereby giving equal opportunity to all the nodes for accessing the bus. Proposed schemes therefore give provisions to change fixed priority scheme of CAN protocol into Round-Robin and Least Recently Used (LRU) priority schemes respectively. Also, the proposed RR and LRU priority schemes can coexist with FP scheme. The proposed schemes are applied at every node which avoids the use of any explicit master node or message scheduler to provide equal opportunity to all the nodes. The proposed schemes do not require changes at physical and data-link layers of CAN protocol. Consideration of emergency state for a particular node is another small contribution of this paper. The proposed emergency priority scheme allows particular nodes to have provision of emergency states for gaining access to the bus out of turn. In this paper, a smart Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system which helps in efficient utilization of energy storage and non-conventional energy sources (NCES) attached to it has been designed and developed. This system is based on real-time pricing linked to the system frequency. In India, such prices are also known by the name of Availability Based Tariff (ABT). The UPS system has been designed and fabricated by employing intelligent control algorithms which help it to take battery charging and discharging decisions on the basis of real-time prices. The control of UPS has been fabricated in ATmega8 microcontroller of AVR family from ATMEL Corporation. Microcontroller detects the supply frequency & Battery level and accordingly controls the Relays for switching operations among Mains, Load, Rectifier, Inverter, Battery and NCES. The system is checked and verified for multiple system operating conditions depending upon supply frequency, Battery level, and availability of NCES etc. The benefit of this system to the consumer is that the effective cost of supplying the load is reduced and they get more options for the choice of the supply. This system draws power from mains (distribution grid) when price is low, as well as stores power. In contrast when price increases it doesn't take power from mains instead uses the stored power which is stored at cheaper cost. If implemented at large scale, it will also help Distribution Utilities in managing demand, improving reliability, optimizing the procurement cost. Additionally, the Grid Operators will also be benefited in terms of better management of grid frequency and reduction in blackouts. The proposed converter exhibits voltage gain same as that of conventional boost converter but has lower source current ripple as compared to it. Additionally, it exhibits reduced switch transition losses on account of zero voltage transition behavior. In soft-switching operation it exhibits seven different modes of operations in one switching cycle and also results in zero-voltage transition to the switching devices. As there are several operating modes in one switching cycle the small-signal z-domain transfer functions are formulated using MATLAB based system identification toolbox, which are then used in the direct digital controller design. A sisotool of matlab is adopted to arrive at final digital voltage-mode controller. Closed-loop converter performance is determined for a 12 to 28 V, 50 W prototype in simulation and then compared with experimental measurements. The antenna is fed by a 50 Ω coaxial cable. Genetic algorithm optimization is used to optimize the patch geometry and feed position. Against this backdrop, Distributed Generation (DG)/Renewable Energy (RE) based micro-grids are considered as one of the feasible options. Distributed Energy Resources (DER) can, not only deliver power to the local areas (where it is installed and distributed) more efficiently and reliably, but it can also feed excess power, if any, to the utility grid. In a micro-grid setup, the optimum planning and control of the micro-grid is a key to maximizing the potential benefits of the real world micro-grid installation. In this paper, the authors attempt to develop an optimal design and planning of a micro-grid considering various distributed energy technology options such as solar Photovoltaic (SPV), small wind electric generator, biomass gasifier system, diesel generator and battery storage for different applications and with realistic inputs on their physical, operating and economic characteristics. The objective of this paper is to come out with many such optimal micro-grids with various combinations of renewable energy resources with optimal dispatch strategies for different applications while minimizing the cost. The new controller is inspired by the human voluntary body action control (dubbed motor control) mechanism. The controller is called Experience Mapping based Prediction Controller (EMPC). EMPC is designed with the concepts of the human motor action prediction-control mechanism as part of its core. The controller has auto-learning features without the need for a plant model which is inspired by the experiential learning ability of humans. The ability to adapt to environmental changes has also been developed as part of EMPC. The simulation results for position control of DC motors for inertial and friction load changes are presented to show that accurate control is achieved using EMPC with good adaptation. The performance of EMPC is compared with MRAC based position controller. Low density polyethylene and cross linked polyethylene are being popularly used as insulation for ac cable application. However, application of these polymers for dc cable insulation is hindered with space charge accumulation. New materials with nano-sized particles included in base polymers were tried out with some successes. But the space charge formation is yet to be understood. Several attempts were made earlier to understand the relation between leakage current conduction in dielectrics and space charge formation. The author presents an understanding on the relation between conduction and space charge and also puts forth recent developments. The solar-PV generating system consists of solar panels, a zeta dc-dc converter, a MPPT (maximum power point tracking) controller, energy storage system, VSI (voltage source inverter) and a filter. A feedback PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller is designed to regulate the output voltage under disturbances at the consumer loads. In multi robot systems simple robots are allowed to coordinate with each other to achieve some well defined goals. In these kinds of systems robots are far less capable as an entity, but the real power lies in cooperation of multiple robots. The simplicity of multi-robots have produced a potentially wide set of applications such as military missions (battlefield surveillance), searching for survivors in disaster hit areas, parallel and simultaneous transportation of vehicles, and delivery of payloads. Although the research on multi-robot systems has attracted considerable attention worldwide in the past decade, the research in this area is still in its infancy. The work uses a color based method for automatic segmentation of eyebrows from video clips and extraction of the key eyebrow features like, two corners of the eyebrows and upper and lower mid points, from eyebrow contour. The color based method of eyebrow segmentation extracts pseudo-hue plane of eyebrow region to separates eyebrow from skin region. The second part of the work focuses on the realization of avatar for eyebrow movements using the obtained eyebrow features. The eyebrow segmentation and features extraction method is much faster than other existing model based methods, as it is simple and uses no prior information about the eyebrow, also it needs no learning method. Around 200 frontal face images from FEI face database [1] and around 100 facial expression videos containing nearly frontal face images from MMI database [2] are tested. Accurate eyebrow segmented region key point detection result is obtained.
