Historically, New Orleans, LA, has long been acquainted with the burden of mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria and yellow fever in the 20th century and West Nile virus in the 21st century. Government mosquito control awareness campaigns have been around for decades as has the use of organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides by mosquito abatement districts. However, few data are available on public perception of mosquito control and public usage of insecticides to kill mosquitoes in New Orleans. We conducted a survey from August 2020 to July 2021 to evaluate New Orleans residents' 1) general knowledge regarding mosquito control and 2) what measures and products they use to control mosquitoes. The aim of this survey was to determine how residents contribute to backyard mosquito control by do-it-yourself or professional applications of insecticides. The survey was disseminated both online and via mail. Of the 396 survey participants, nearly all (99.48%) agreed that mosquito control is important in New Orleans because it prevents mosquito bites (30.85%), prevents mosquito borne-diseases (38.51%), and prevents nuisance mosquitoes (29.17%). More than one-third (35%) of survey participants indicated that they empty containers to reduce adult mosquitoes on their own property. More than two-thirds of the participants (69.95%) would not hire a pest management professional to spray their yard for adult mosquitoes, and only 20% of survey participants do apply a pesticide to kill adult mosquitoes on their own property. None of our findings were associated with the level of education, gender, or age of participants. This study suggests that the City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board educational and outreach campaigns may be an effective tool in spreading mosquito control awareness and contribute to residents' knowledge of mosquito control. Recognizing the daily rhythms of pathogen vectors can be helpful in developing effective, safe, and sustainable management strategies to control vector insects and reduce the spread of pathogens. However, studying the daily rhythm of insects often requires costly or labor-intensive trapping, and few tools are available to quantify daily rhythms in the field. We developed a simple collection system to study the flight activity of mosquitoes and biting midges using a contained, programmable, rotating, automatic pet feeder. A diverse assemblage of nuisance and vector species were collected with our system, including mosquitoes of the genera Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, and Deinocerites and biting midges (Ceratopogonidae) such as the coastal pest Culicoides furens. Surprisingly, mosquitoes and biting midges were less active during crepuscular periods (1800-2100h; 0600-0900h) than during dark periods (2100h-2400h; 0300h-0600h). A number of urban and agricultural pest insects were captured, including Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Isoptera and Lepidoptera. This study shows that relatively inexpensive products can be adapted to study the daily rhythms of flying vectors and nuisance arthropods, with implications for vector-borne disease transmission and control. Larviciding that targets one of the aquatic stages is among the routine practices in mosquito control operations. One of the most extensive and challenging mosquito production sources in urban environments is underground storm drain systems. Along with the research and development of biorational larvicides in recent decades, numerous products based on microbial and insect growth regulators have become available. However, the performance of these products often varies because of product design and challenges associated with urban storm drain systems. This paper validates the comparative bioactivity and semifield efficacy of 2 control release products based on pyriproxyfen and S-methoprene. In laboratory bioassays, pyriproxyfen was significantly more active than S-methoprene against the test species, Culex quinquefasciatus Say and Aedes aegypti (L.). Culex quinquefasciatus was less susceptible than Ae. aegypti to both test materials. During a 26-wk-long semifield evaluation using the cast concrete simulated catch basins, the inhibition of emergence pretreatment and posttreatment in untreated control was negligible. The Sumilarv 0.5G applied at 75 g per catch basin provided 100% IE, whereas the Altosid XR briquet applied at 1 per catch basin yielded only partial control fluctuating from 12.7% to 82.7% (average 40.7%) of Cx. quinquefasciatus and 8.0% to 78.8% (average 37.4%) of Ae. aegypti. The Altosid XR briquet had an average residual weight of 59.9% at the end of semifield evaluation. Here, we report records for 3 species collected in 2021 that had not been documented previously in Collier County, FL: Aedes tortilis, Culex declarator, and Cx. tarsalis. Specimens were initially identified based on morphology, then each species was confirmed by comparing the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences to those of other related mosquito species. Most pathogens vectored by these mosquitoes do not have therapeutic remedies; thus, combating these diseases is dependent upon vector control. Improvements in vector control strategies are urgently needed, but these hinge on understanding the biology and ecology of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus. Both species have been extensively investigated, but further knowledge on diel resting activity of these vectors can improve vector surveillance and control tools for targeting resting vector populations. From April to December 2021, we determined outdoor daytime resting habits of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus male, female, and blood-fed female populations in Reynosa, Mexico, using large red odor-baited wooden box traps. The daytime resting activity for Ae. aegypti males, females, and blood-fed females was restricted to a period between 0900 h and 1300 h, with a peak at 0900 h, while the resting activity of Cx. quinquefasciatus male, female, and blood-fed females was between 0700 h and 1100 h, with a peak at 0700 h. A generalized additive model was developed to relate relative humidity and temperature to resting Cx. quinquefasciatus and Ae. aegypti male, female, and blood-fed populations caught in traps. {"title":"Seasonal Abundance of Aedes Sollicitans and Aedes Taeniorhynchus Related to Temperature, Rainfall and Tidal Levels in Northeastern Florida.","authors":"Patricia Dale, Whitney A Qualls, Rui-De Xue","doi":"10.2987/23-7130","DOIUrl":"10.2987/23-7130","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The Anastasia Mosquito Control District, which manages mosquitoes in St. Johns County in northeastern Florida, has observed that the maximum numbers of the salt marsh mosquitoes, Aedes taeniorhynchus and Ae. sollicitan appeared to shift or change relative to each other, as evidenced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light trap data in the past 17 years. The aim of this study was to analyze environmental data to identify and explore these changes. Data from CDC light traps, temperature, rainfall, and tidal levels were analyzed using ANOVA. Analyses showed the 2 species had maximum abundance at different temperatures, which translated into seasonal differences with peaks of Ae. taeniorhynchus in the summer and, to a lesser extent, later in the year, and Ae. sollicitans with a peak in the autumn. This seasonal pattern was reflected in rainfall (more rain in autumn than in summer) and also, in the general area, in tidal levels (mean highest tide levels at the recording station were in autumn). The research demonstrated that simplifying the mosquito data, initially using only very high trap numbers (Mean ± 2 SD) that are important for control, identified, and made the seasonal pattern very obvious. The pattern was also observed using all the data but, although significant, was not as clear. Having identified tide as a potential driving variable, further research needs to detail spatial tidal patterns to identify areas and timing of flooding and explore the relationship between salinity and mosquito species and abundance. In order to evaluate a potential rotation product, aerial applications of Duet HD™, a pyrethroid, were conducted under operational conditions against wild populations of Aedes dorsalis and Culex tarsalis and against colony strains of Cx. pipiens and Cx. quinquefasciatus. The erratic wind patterns of the greater Salt Lake area did not prevent sufficient droplet deposition flux at 9 monitoring locations spread across a 5,120-acre (2,072 ha) spray block within rural habitats. Three separate aerial application trials showed great efficacy against Ae. dorsalis. In contrast, Cx. tarsalis exhibited inconsistent treatment-associated mortalities, suggesting the presence of less susceptible or resistant field populations as a result of spillover from agricultural or residential pyrethroid usage. Bottle bioassays to diagnose pyrethroid resistance using field-collected Cx. tarsalis indicated that some populations of this species, especially those closest to urban edges, failed to show adequate mortality in resistance assays. Despite challenging weather conditions, Duet HD worked reasonably well against susceptible mosquito species, and it may provide a crucial role as an alternative for organophosphate applications within specific and sensitive areas. However, its area-wide adoption into control applications by the SLCMAD could be problematic due to reduced impacts on the most important arboviral vector species, Cx. tarsalis, in this area. Insecticide resistance has been reported in mosquito vectors in the ROK, highlighting the need for a sustained ROK-wide resistance surveillance program. To address this need from April 2022 until October 2022, larvae and pupae of Aedes albopictus, Ae. koreicus, and Culex pipiens were collected from US Army Garrison (USAG) Daegu (Camps Carroll and Henry), USAG Yongsan-Casey (Camp Casey), and USAG Humphreys (Camp Humphreys) and screened for resistance to insecticides using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) bottle bioassay. No resistance to deltamethrin or chlorpyrifos was detected in Ae. albopictus populations, but one population showed possible resistance to permethrin. Aedes koreicus populations were found to be resistant to etofenprox and permethrin with possible resistance to deltamethrin but were susceptible to chlorpyrifos. Culex pipiens populations were found to be resistant to chlorpyrifos, permethrin, and deltamethrin.
