These two questions are inextricably linked because having founded and developed the Japanese Orthodox Church, Nikolai sought to build up its relations with the Japanese state, the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian state, according to his understanding of the Orthodox ideal, and his views therefore had a direct bearing on his activities and the status of the Japanese Orthodox Church.The topic of Nikolai’s ideas about the status of the Japanese Church is poorly covered by the available literature, which predominantly adopts the simplistic view that Nikolai immediately tried to create a church that was as independent from the Russian Church as possible. This view, however, relies on individual comments taken out of context. The issue is important both in itself and for those who wish to investigate how far the potential indigenisation of the Orthodox Church can be stretched, as well as Nikolai’s views on the matter. The authors conclude that it would be a gross over-simplification to say that Nikolai supported an independent Japanese Church from the outset of his work in the country. In fact, he advocated close ties with the Russian Church for the foreseeable as a guarantee of the Japanese Church’s commitment to true Orthodoxy and fought actively against those who supported premature independence. While it is true that for pragmatic purposes, he would publicly express opinions in support of actual independence for the Japanese Church, this only took place during a period of growth in anti-Russian sentiment in Japan and he would only do so to protect the Church from attacks.","PeriodicalId":170812,"journal":{"name":"St.Tikhons' University Review","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129332925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research is based on various sources: official documents, secular and church periodicals, writings of “Commission’s” members and the Octobrists. The author throws light upon the events of the conflict between liberal-minded members of the Society of Worshipers of Spiritual Enlightenment and the Moscow church hierarchy. The article touches on the reasons for establishing of the \"Commission\", as well as the circumstances that led to its rapprochement with the party \"October 17 Union\". On the one hand, the “Commission” sought to find material assistance from the party, and on the other hand, the Octobrists needed to develop an ecclesiastic issue with their program using the knowledge and experience of the Orthodox clergy. The author gives a vivid description of institutional changes of the \"Commission\" that related to the Octobrists’ influence. Besides, the collection of the articles of the \"Commission\" is published with the financial support of the party. The \"Commission\" under impact of the party expanded its program. The author gives an insight into the reasons for the decline of the activities of the \"Commission\" under the \"Union of October 17\". They consisted in the postponement of a church council, as well as in a reorganization of \"Union of October 17». The article shows how the experience of interaction between the \"Commission\" and the \"Union of October 17\" influenced the subsequent work of the Octobrists on an ecclesiastic issue in the II and III State Dumas.","PeriodicalId":170812,"journal":{"name":"St.Tikhons' University Review","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115025983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vladimir Rodzianko (Hieromonk Vasily) to Protopresbyter Georgy Grabbe. Both the sender and the addressee are wellknown. The former is the future bishop and a long-term prsenter of Orthodox programmes on BBC Radio. The former also became a bishop, and for many years was the secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad having a great infl uence on its policy. The letters were written in the early 1979 in the moment of great changes in the life of their author. The fi rst letter was prepared when he was Protopriest Vladimir, the second soon after his becoming a monk as Hieromonk Vasily. The reason for the letters were the attacks of the administration of the Russian Church Abroad against Moscow Patriarchate as well as the idea, popular in the Russian Orthodox Church, that there is no holy grace at all in any communities not belonging to the Orthodox Church. This idea was put forward by Protopresbyter G. Grabbe in the article Acribeia and Oeconomy. This approach was aggravated by the fact that the administration of the Russian Church Abroad regarded as apostate the clergy of Moscow Patriarchate. The consequence was an idea about their gracelessness. Hieromonk Vasily (Rodzianko) thought that this was erroneous and dangerous. Using certain historical evidence and an opinion of St. Ioann (Maksimovich), he claimed that the Orthodox gaith and the Eucharist are supreme over the jurisdictional controversies and that the temporary discord does not aff ect grace. The letters contain interesting facts as to relations between the Russian Church Abroad and the Serbian Church in the 1920s — 1940s, describe little-known details between the Russian Church Abroad and other branches of Russian church in exile.","PeriodicalId":170812,"journal":{"name":"St.Tikhons' University Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130953544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was written in April 1934 and summarised his understanding of the current state of aff airs in the church together with possible ways of overcoming the situation created by the policy of Patriarchal Locum Tenens Sergiy (Stragorodsky). Hieromartyr Kirill was firmly committed to the legacy of the Council of 1917–1918 and to the Patriarchal Administration established by the Council. The most important canonical acts which, in his opinion, should have been used in the current circumstances, were the Resolution of the Supreme Church Administration under Patriarch Tikhon of November 20, 1920 and the Patriarchal testamentary decree of January 7, 1925. Metropolitan Kirill’s associate was Hieromartyr Bishop Damaskin (Tsedik). He convincingly supported their position using the letters of the Patriarchal Locum Tenens Metropolitan Petr (Polyansky) of 1929–1930. These clearly showed that Metropolitan Sergiy signifi cantly exceeded his authority and appropriated rights that he had not been endowed with. The publication also includes a document most likely compiled by Bishop Damaskin, based on the opinions of Metropolitans Kirill and Petr. Both documents are cited according to the same source, i.e. the notebook of Bishop Damaskin, seized from him during his arrest in 1934, and now kept in Jordanville, the spiritual center of the Russian Church Abroad.","PeriodicalId":170812,"journal":{"name":"St.Tikhons' University Review","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115598926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Asprem, Y. Strube, L. Saif are primarily distinguished. At the beginning, a general outline of the current state of esotericism research is given, then the analysis of the attitude of the younger generation to the works of the classics is carried out, the criticism of the main ideas of W. Hanegraaff. Then the critique of the category of Western esotericism is analyzed on three points: the construction of categories of Islamic esotericism, the artificiality of the opposition esotericism - occultism, the construction of the term \"Western esotericism\". It is demonstrated that the division into ethic and emic categories actually turns out to be conditional, and the modern conceptual foundations of theories rest in the esoteric teachings of the middle of the XIX century. The critique of the concept of esotericism as rejected knowledge is analyzed separately. Then an overview of the positive program of new generation of researchers is given, in which two directions are fixed: race and gender. In conclusion, a critical examination of the pros and cons of the program of the new generation of esotericism researchers is carried out. It is concluded that the criticism of the works of the classics presented by the new generation is successful and well-founded, but the fascination with postmodern theories often reduces the novelty of their works to defending neoliberal values, multiculturalism, racial and gender equality, deconstruction of large narratives.","PeriodicalId":170812,"journal":{"name":"St.Tikhons' University Review","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129356297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Later, based on lectures, he prepared for publication the book «The History of Medieval Philosophy in Connection with General History of Culture, Science and Theology», which remained unpublished, but was preserved in the archival fund of V.N. Ilyin (Archive of Alexander Solzhenitsyn House of Russia Abroad. F. 31). This publication contains one of the lectures by V.N. Ilyin entitled «Problems, origins and ways of medieval philosophy». It gives an idea of the general approach of V.N. Ilyin to medieval philosophy, about his main concept. According to Ilyin, medieval thought of Western Europe was determined by the antinomy between dogma and dialectics. Ilyin divided the history of medieval philosophy into two periods: until the XIII century, the era of the struggle of ideas and active development, and after the XIII century, when scholasticism won, and then fell into decay. V.N. Ilyin considers that two thinkers Thomas Aquinas (around 1225–1274) and Bonaventure (around 1217–1274), their ideological confrontation, are of great importance for understanding the philosophy of the XIII century. Thomas Aquinas won and determined the further development of Western philosophy, but Bonaventure’s ideas about the union of theology and philosophy did not disappear and develop in new philosophical teachings (Friedrich Wilhelm Schelling, Henri Bergson, Gabriel Marcel and others). In Ilyin’s opinion, in order to overcome scholasticism and rationalism, which prevailed in Western philosophy, it will necessary to return to the fathers of Church, to Plato and Aristotle. V.N. Ilyin proposed his program, based on the main thesis «Return to the Fathers of the Church as a source of true philosophy», expressed solidarity with V. Gioberty and I.V. Kireevsky.","PeriodicalId":170812,"journal":{"name":"St.Tikhons' University Review","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123395419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
