Criton, Sanjana Joy","doi":"10.25259/jsstd_49_2023","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.25259/jsstd_49_2023","url":null,"abstract":"The gut microbiome, comprising trillions of microorganisms with diverse genetic material, plays a pivotal role in human health. Its impact on immunity, metabolism, and even psychological well-being has garnered significant attention. This review delves into the evolution of microbiome research, highlighting historic breakthroughs and modern revelations. The gut microbiota’s influence extends beyond digestion, impacting immune system development, hormone regulation, and maintenance of protective barriers. Disturbances in this balance, known as dysbiosis, can disrupt immune responses, fostering harmful bacteria over beneficial ones. Dysbiosis has been linked to various diseases, motivating exploration of the gut-skin axis. Research suggests that the gut microbiome significantly influences dermatological conditions. Imbalances can contribute to skin diseases like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Short-chain fatty acids produced by gut bacteria have anti-inflammatory effects and maintain skin health. Gut dysbiosis can lead to systemic inflammation, affecting skin physiology. Ultraviolet (UV) damage and skin aging are also affected by the gut microbiome. Studies reveal that certain Lactobacillus strains, ingested orally, possess anti-inflammatory properties, mitigating UV-induced skin aging. Moreover, supplementation with specific bacteria enhances skin elasticity and hydration. Conditions such as rosacea, hidradenitis suppurativa, and chronic spontaneous urticaria have been linked to gut dysbiosis. Research indicates a potential for treatments that target the gut microbiome, such as fecal microbiota transplantation and probiotics, to alleviate dermatological disorders. In conclusion, the gut microbiome exerts a profound influence on skin health and diseases. Its intricate interactions with the immune system, systemic inflammation, and barrier maintenance underscore its significance. Harnessing these insights could lead to innovative therapies for various skin conditions, paving the way for enhanced well-being.","PeriodicalId":17051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Skin and Sexually Transmitted Diseases","volume":"117 36","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139615117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On examination, the patient had multiple discrete erythematous macules, papules, and plaques on the face and forearms in a photo distribution. The patient was investigated on the lines of systemic lupus erythematosus, but the antinuclear antibody profile was negative. Slit skin smear from skin lesions showed malignant lymphocytes. Peripheral smear and bone marrow smear showed malignant lymphocytes. Skin biopsy showed the entire dermis packed with malignant lymphocytes. Immunocytochemistry showed malignant lymphocytes which are CD3+, CD4+, CD30 negative, CD20 and CD117 negative, diagnostic of mycosis fungoides (MF). The patient expired before the treatment could be started. We are reporting an aggressive form of MF presenting with the clinical features suggestive of systemic lupus erythematosus.","PeriodicalId":17051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Skin and Sexually Transmitted Diseases","volume":"55 47","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138946263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 65-year-old female patient with non-small cell carcinoma lung with bone metastasis was started on gefitinib monotherapy after which the patient noticed papulo-pustular lesions on the scalp, later leading to loss of hair. Dermatological examination revealed erythema, pustules with crusting, along with matting of the hair on the frontoparietal area with some areas of hair loss. Trichoscopic examination showed the absence of follicular openings indicating scarring alopecia. Skin biopsy showed perivascular mixed infiltrate of lymphocytes and neutrophils and absent hair follicles, consistent with gefitinib-induced erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp, a rare entity.","PeriodicalId":17051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Skin and Sexually Transmitted Diseases","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139269590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, certain subtypes of common dermatological conditions can involve sites opposite to that of the classical presentation. These subtypes are named using the prefix “inverse” or the suffix “inversus/inversa” in the literature. These variants may pose a diagnostic challenge to residents and knowledge of the various “inverse” dermatological conditions and phenomena in the literature is of great significance.","PeriodicalId":17051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Skin and Sexually Transmitted Diseases","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135170883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
