The violence began as a response to the shooting of President Juvenal Habyarimana’s plane at about 8:30 pm on April 6 and killed all on board. It degenerated into a genocide that lasted for one hundred days and left approximately eight hundred thousand people dead. This genocide has been the subject of extensive study and documentation.1 In Rwandan Women Rising, Swanee Hunt adds to this literature by exploring how Rwandan women rose from helpless victims to powerful and influential positions of leadership that enabled them to be at the forefront of helping their country rise from the ashes. Drawing on hundreds of conversations with mostly women and a few men over a period of sixteen years, Hunt brings forth the women’s stories both during and after the massacre. She lets Rwandan women share their stories in their own words.This gives the reader a vivid picture of the events and experiences during the massacre and in its aftermath. Her main thrust is that the genocide and its aftermath provided space and opportunities for Rwandan women to rise to prominent positions, especially as they engaged in talks, reconciliation work, and took up positions in both government structures and the private sector. But how was this possible and what was the context?","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"265 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123265276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Son invisibilisation et son désaveu, d’abord, mais aussi le refus d’historiciser ses violences dans des dynamiques proprement canadiennes ont précisément pour effet de réarticuler et d’entretenir dans le présent ce qui « n’existe pas (ici) ». Ces négations déterminent en grandepartie les paramètres dans lesquels s’exerce le racisme anti-noir au Canada, et tout particulièrement son expression institutionnelle à travers le pouvoir et l’autorité de l’État. Pourtant, penser les possibles de la libération implique nécessairement d’envisager les réalités historiques et contemporaines de la perte et des violences subies. C’est dans cette perspective que s’inscrit le projet militant entrepris par Robyn Maynard dans Policing Black Lives. Elle y dresse un portrait aussi précis que douloureux des conditions d’existence noire produites et entretenues par un ensemble de mécanismes de pouvoir inter reliés constituant conjointement la violence perpétrée et permise par l’État canadien. L’articulation de cette violence multiforme des différents niveaux de gouvernements aussi bien que des institutions qui en relèvent remonte à l’esclavage et aux fondements sur lesquels reposent ses dimensions particulières au Canada, où la logique déployée côtoie de très près celle de la colonisation de peuplement. Le travail généalogique que propose Maynard entend ainsi disséquer les discours, techniques et outils de contrôle et d’exclusion mis en place et entretenus, en les analysant comme réactualisations contextuelles de l’héritage de l’esclavage dans le passé et le présent colonial du Canada.","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126294439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He is not one to shy away from taking on challenging and demanding assignments. Like his book before this one, Liberation Movements in Power: Party and State in Southern Africa (University of KwaZulu-Natal Press, 2013) was pathbreaking in examining and exploring the structural anatomy and governance pathologies of liberation movements in Southern Africa. Here he laid bare theirloss of moral authority to govern once ensconced in power; only to become authoritarian party machines based on corruption, avarice, and patronage.","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131655941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alors que Benjamin pêche au bord du fleuve, Omi-Ala avec ses trois frères, Abulu, le fou, leur apprend une terrible prophétie : Ikenna, l’aîné, sera assassiné par l’un d’entre eux. Livrés à eux-mêmes depuis le départ du père, muté dans une autre ville, les frères Agwe voient leur avenir tout tracé et leur belle entente se briser. Chez Chigozie Obioma, le regard d’adulte et d’enfant de Benjamin s’y mêle. D’ailleurs, il le dit si bien àtravers les propos qui suivent : « Lorsque j’y repense aujourd’hui, ce que je me surprends à faire de plus en plus souvent à présent que j’ai moi-même des fils, je comprends que c’est lors d’une de ces expéditions que notre vie, notre monde a changé. Car c’est bien là que le temps s’est mis à compter, au bord de ce fleuve qui fit de nous des pêcheurs » (p. 22).","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"342 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129524435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Juive sépharade, elle est originaire de Fès et fille d’un homme d’affaires fortuné. C’est dans la ferme familiale, à Sefrou, dans une proche localité de sa ville natale, qu’elle passe une enfance et une adolescence des plus heureuses et des plus insouciantes, choyée par son père avec lequel elle vit une relation fusionnelle. Pour elle, Séfrou est un « havre de paix où cohabitaient musulmans et juifs. C’était un lieu de brassage de cultures, de langues et de traditions. Il reflétait réellement l’esprit qui régnait à l’époque d’un Maroc pluriel, multiethnique et tolérant. On y parlait l’arabe, des dialectes berbères ainsi que l’hébreu » (p. 17). C’est dans ce village qu’elle rencontre Mohand, berbère et musulman, avec lequel elle partage un amour sincère et passionné. C’est déjà pour la jeune sépharade, transgresser l’interdit, commettre un péché mortel vis-à-vis de sa communauté religieuse. C’est « briser un tabou séculaire » (p. 41).","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121810450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ce dernier thème revient encore une fois dans La terre qui les sépare, mais cette fois-ci sans fiction et avec un fond autobiographique. Hisham Matar est né en 1970 à New York. Il a passé sa petite enfance en Amérique où son père, Jaballa Matar, un diplomate libyen, travaillait pourla délégation libyenne aux Nations Unies.
