Il a créé et dirigé plusieurs entreprises avant de rejoindre la Compagnie Française de l’Afrique Occidentale1 (CFAO) de 2002 à 2008 afin d’y mettre en place sa direction de la communication. Cet ouvrage qui propose un voyage dans le temps et dans l’espace ‘africain’, retrace l’histoire de la CFAO et propose de rendre compte d’une histoire de l’Afrique liée à celle de cette  compagnie à travers 75 témoignages d’entrepreneurs et de cadres qui appartenaient à ce groupe. Constitué de dix parties, il rappelle dès le départ que de tous temps, ce sont les marchands qui ont découverts les nouvelles terres et non pas les explorateurs, ni les missionnaires et encore moins les corps expéditionnaires. En Afrique comme ailleurs, c’est le commerce qui a été le moteur des relations avec l’occident.","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121630732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cet intérêt porte sur le retard économique et social des pays africains, le déficit démocratique, la gouvernance, les fléaux naturels, les maladies et les conflits infranationaux ou régionaux. En somme, par rapport à leur analyse des continents, les chercheurs ont porté leur attention sur la persistance du sous-développement dans cette partie de la planète aussi riche en ressources naturelles et minières. Le livre de Philippe Hugon « Afriques entre puissance et vulnérabilité », publié chez Armand Colin en 2016, s’inscrit dans ce registre. Recadrant les difficultés structurelles des pays africains, l’auteur, tout en contextualisant les perspectives de leur développement, aborde les multiples aspects des sociétés et États du Continent pour situer les foyers de puissance et de vulnérabilité. Pour montrer l’importance de cet ouvrage dans le champ de la recherche scientifique concernant l’Afrique, nous essayons d’expliquer en quoi consiste son intérêt.","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123496900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Une histoire globale est le deuxième ouvrage de l’historienne américaine Gabrielle Hecht, professeure à l’université du Michigan et spécialiste de l’histoire des sciences et des techniques. Ses travaux sur le nucléaire l’ont conduit à publier en 1998 un livre précurseur intitulé The Radiance of France : Nuclear Power and National Identity after World War II1. C’est un travail qui s’inscrit dans une approche latourienne où l’auteure a forgé les concepts de « technopolitique » et « nucléarité » et a contribué fortement au développement des Sciences Studies en France. On compte aujourd’hui notamment, plusieurs travaux d’historiens et de sociologues des sciences qui travaillent sur les questions nucléaires, les radiations et plus généralement sur l’histoire de la santé au travail.","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117100862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En retour, la société et le politique ont développé des rapports d’attraction-rejet envers eux assez forts. Il est vrai que les intellectuels eux-mêmes n’ont pas toujours réussi à rendre leurs dires et actes plus compréhensibles. Ainsi, si Sartre, au sein d’une Europe en crise, en partie due à la confrontation des identités, qualifiait l’intellectuel de : « quelqu’un qui se mêle de ce qui ne le regarde pas »1, Collini reconnait aux intellectuels ‘a more generalogic’ commune à ces derniers en dépit de leurs origines culturelles, sociales, raciales ou autres. Edward Said,adoptant une définition plus générique, a défini l’intellectuel public comme « le moqueur dont la position est de soulever publiquement des questions embarrassantes, de confronter l’orthodoxie et le dogme, pour être quelqu’un qui ne peut être facilement coopté par des gouvernements ou des corporations ».","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"132 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116129026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

About 450 of these bodies belonged to Eritreans who had undertaken the perilous journey across the Mediterranean from the Libyan coast. They had trusted their fate to boats that were hardly seaworthy in the hope of reaching Europe and finding asylum. This was not the first of such incidents; nor was it to be the last. Few people could fathom the reason why the victims would resort to such desperate measures, courting almost certain death, rather than remain in their own country. The book under review provides the answer in eloquent fashion. At the root of this exodus of Eritrean youth is the most heinous form of ‘national service’ that the world has ever seem. Initiated to inculcate the values of the liberation struggle to the Eritrean youth, the institution has degenerated into a regime of veritable servitude costing each conscript up to two decades of his/her life.","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132496928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Ethiopian developmental state and its ‘impressive’ achievement is the central subject matter of Aaron Tesfaye’s book. Conceptualizing economic development broadly as a process of transforming not onlythe economic sector but also the social and the political structure of a country, the author explores this transformationprocess anchoring his analysis on the role of the Ethiopian state. Defining the developmental state by its ideology andstructural autonomy from society, Aaron sets the major problematique of the book- the history of successful developmental states in Africa - in order to debunk the Afro-pessimist representation of African states as collapsed and too weak to be agents of development. Indeed, using the success stories of Botswana and the emerging success of Ethiopia as evidence, the author debunks the pessimist representation of African states. It is the empirical record of economic growth measured in GDP and the impressive performance in achieving Millennium Development Goals and self-proclaimed emulation project of ‘developmental’ state by Ethiopian leaders, acclaimed by scholars and international aid agencies alike, that constitute the rationale of Aaron’s book.","PeriodicalId":170362,"journal":{"name":"Africa Review of Books","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114165225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
