In this context and in an intercultural perspective, we will analyse ‘CAPTAINS’, a project undertaken in the Leonardo da Vinci European framework and carried out by an international consortium of partners. Indeed, the idea that the specificities of multicultural crews must be taken into account as early as their training period to counterbalance communication problems onboard has been the focus of research for both maritime practitioners and language instructors. Nevertheless, integrated approaches featuring the collaboration of all relevant stakeholders are rare, and the results are not always easily transposable to practical applications. \u0000 \u0000The present paper is an attempt to analyse the intercultural dimension of maritime English, to elaborate what constitutes added intercultural value in a sector specific sense and to incorporate said elements in concrete learning items with the aid of novel language learning approaches.","PeriodicalId":170104,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Decision Sciences, Risk and Management","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127981228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As tourism is one of the main industries in Greece, with a share in total economic activity varying from 15% to 20% of GDP (whether measured directly or indirectly respectively), both the theoretical and practical implications of pinpointing the determinants of profitability are significant: first, at the microeconomic level, these determinants are interwoven with the decision-making process of firms; and secondly, at the macroeconomic level, these determinants should be taken into account when policy makers try to formulate appropriate policies that could support or stimulate investment activity in the tourism sector.","PeriodicalId":170104,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Decision Sciences, Risk and Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115799975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, we will investigate how these relationships are changed, if we use static (which is expressed by the current and the quick ratios), or dynamic liquidity measures (which is expressed by the cash conversion cycle). The results indicated that the relationship between the cash conversion cycle and the static liquidity ratios is positive, but not significant. The relationships between the static liquidity ratios with the return on equity, and the return on assets, are negative and significant, while the correlation between the cash conversion cycle and the return on assets is positive and with the return on equity is negative. The relationships between the three liquidity ratios and the indebtedness were negative and significant. The relationship between the firm size and the cash conversion cycle was negative and significant. Finally, there was not a significant correlation between the three liquidity ratios and growth, showing that under this crisis period Greek companies struggle for survival and there is no growth.","PeriodicalId":170104,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Decision Sciences, Risk and Management","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127634251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims at developing a competitive tender pricing model to determine the pricing mechanism of engineering project services coupled with the goal of assisting bidders for successful and efficient attendance in tenders. This study used a combinational approach to the pricing of two-stage tenders based on which a winning distribution function is developed in accordance with client preferences. The winning distribution function was considered to determine the winning probability of each offered price based on the normalised one. After developing the model, in order to consider the cost and the margin, the cost of the project is inserted in the model with the introduction of a new variable. Using this model, bidders can estimate the winning distribution function from the client’s point of view. Also, they can determine the desirable winning probability and the corresponding price of that probability will be determined accordingly. The model has been validated with the actual project information (historical data) collected from a survey of engineering services.","PeriodicalId":170104,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Decision Sciences, Risk and Management","volume":"2020 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132841066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Risk factors have been evaluated using linguistic representations of the extent of risk characteristics involved, their frequency of occurrence, severity of its impact and the uncertainty involved in its control mechanism if any. For each linguistic value, there is corresponding membership function ranging over a universe of discourse. The risk characteristics having highest degree of featural value are taken as the known pattern. Each sample pattern of the other risk characteristics with their known featural values are then matched with the known pattern. The concept of multi-feature pattern matching based on fuzzy logic is used to derive the rank ordering of risk characteristics. A methodology has been developed and the same exemplified by presenting a case example with limited number of risk characteristics.","PeriodicalId":170104,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Decision Sciences, Risk and Management","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133275858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve this, a container terminal must apply a cost leadership strategy or differentiate its functions. The introduction of electronic port services offers greater productivity, reduced operational cost, and higher level of quality services. As the need to support agile container terminal operations with rapidly evolving and highly differentiated software applications emerges, robust, integrated and usable methodologies and tools, specialised in evaluating electronic services for container terminal operations are necessary. We propose a particular approach that combines the strategic fit, AHP, QFD and balanced scorecard techniques in order to evaluate the e-services to be adopted in a container terminal environment, using a variety of criteria covering technological, organisational and environmental dimensions. The paper presents the case study of the container terminal of Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) where the methodology has been applied to evaluate a number of selected electronic port services.","PeriodicalId":170104,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Decision Sciences, Risk and Management","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116927718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research streams on contract factors, supply chain factors, environmental factors, and competitive factors were reviewed to arrive at 11 contract factors. Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) analysed empirical data collected from 17 experts to weight the importance of contract factors. It was found that most important factors are, in order of significance: trust, long-term view and partnership. Competitive factors scored lower than supply chain factors. Incentives, although important, were not the first concern in designing a sound contract. Findings suggest that, instead of protecting opportunism, companies design contracts to promote cooperation and partnership within a buyer-seller relationship. This study concludes by discussing limitations and recommendations.","PeriodicalId":170104,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Decision Sciences, Risk and Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124963053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
