In the junior English classroom, language is not only a tool for teachers to organize teaching, but also the main source of students’ target language input. Therefore, more and more researchers at home and abroad pay attention to it. Classroom interactive language mainly includes questions and feedback. Among them, classroom questions are divided into display questions and reference questions. Junior high school is a very important stage of English learning. This paper will elaborate on interactive teaching and interactive classroom, and analyze the characteristics of junior high school English interactive classroom in detail, so as to provide a theoretical and methodological perspective for studying the relationship between second language acquisition and classroom teaching.","PeriodicalId":169592,"journal":{"name":"Education and Linguistics Research","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124049332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Case Study on Chinese Secondary School EFL Teachers","authors":"Hongji Jiang","doi":"10.5296/elr.v8i2.20412","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5296/elr.v8i2.20412","url":null,"abstract":"While there is no lack of studies on the benefits of using humor in English class, why Chinese EFL teachers choose to use humor or not use it remains unclear. Previous studies examined the benefits of the use of humor in language classrooms, but none of them has queried a deep understanding of the role of humor from teachers’ perspectives. It comprised a case study focusing on three English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers from a secondary school in China. The data were collected over a period of six months using semi-structured interviews, observations and stimulated recall interviews. This qualitative case study found five reasons for the Chinese EFL teachers’ use of humor, which are teaching strategy, students’ benefits, atmosphere & relationship, teachers’ benefits and teachers’ ability. The potential explanations behind each reason were also discussed in the study.","PeriodicalId":169592,"journal":{"name":"Education and Linguistics Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131024175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Second, shedding light on the salient features of the Jordanian Discourse on terrorism and the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS) Terrorism’s Discourse in the wake of the Jordanian pilot Moath Al-kasasbah heinous crime. Third, identifying the persuasion strategies utilized by both sides for the aim of affecting the opinion of the public. The data whose concern included official statements of the Jordanian officials from one side, and the narrative of ISIS exemplified in the script of the video which revealed the destiny of the Jordanian pilot. The methodology adopted in achieving the aims of the study is mainly based on speech act analysis on Searle’s typology of five performative speech acts (directives, declaratives, commissives, expressives, and assertaives). The analysis of the data revealed the following findings: first, both parties showed its own conflicting ideologies in which they defended their cause. Second, the conflicting sides utilized performative speech acts in varying proportions and styles for the sake of persuading the audience. This poignant variation reflects the inclination of both parties to use different persuasion strategies in order to influence the opinion of the public for the aim of garnering support for their cause. The research concludes with a recommendation that various studies need to conduct in order to investigate the various linguistic features founded in this type of discourse and which can be utilized in other models of discourse analysis.","PeriodicalId":169592,"journal":{"name":"Education and Linguistics Research","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124965950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The discussion afforded here problematizes approaches that are purely recognition oriented, such as decolonial perspectives based on race, while also questioning the use of redistribution approaches based on class only and that do not consider critical perspectives. Drawing on the work of decolonial authors mainly from Latin America, four vignettes from the author’s experience are brought to illustrate the discussion. The argument advanced in the paper is that an ecology of approaches is needed to tackle recognition issues involved in language use but if the aim is to address redistribution, that is, social justice, language researchers have to incorporate new questions and perhaps approaches engaging to a much greater extent with the underlying causes of social injustice that correlates with the spread of English.","PeriodicalId":169592,"journal":{"name":"Education and Linguistics Research","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131938398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was done by examining the factors, which determine the Francophone students’ rising interest in their choice of studying English. Students of the Special Bilingual Classes were chosen to be the focus of this research based on their bilingual learning setting. The data was collected through questionnaires and interviews. Questionnaire and interview guide were designed to capture the Francophone students’ attitude and their choice of studying English, when they already have French that they can use in all circumstances. The results revealed that the Francophone students of the Special Bilingual Classes of the English Department hold a positive attitude toward English. Both teachers and students of the Special Bilingual Classes of the English Department of G.B.H.S Bayelle did indicate some kind of shift from French to English that reflects the latter’s position as a global lingua franca, associated with western style of life, prosperity and economic development, scholarship, carrier opportunity, science and technology, to name just a few. The results also showed preponderant influence or authority over students from English speaking background which prevents them from having a sound education.","PeriodicalId":169592,"journal":{"name":"Education and Linguistics Research","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117217030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The qualitative design was used in this study. The persuasive strategies theory was used in this study to analyze Prophet Mohammed’s final sermon. The analysis of this sermon revealed that it contains all three persuasive strategies: logos, pathos, and ethos. The results revealed that the frequency percentages for the selected strategies are as follows: logos 50%, pathos 40%, and ethos 10%. Furthermore, the sermon contains a variety of speech acts. This study is significant because the speaker is well-known, which piques the interest of many readers/listeners. Furthermore, the sermon is clear and full of logical sentences, which appeals to a wide range of readers, including politicians, speechmakers, and researchers. Furthermore, this study is significant for linguists and researchers because it examines the sermon from previously overlooked perspectives.","PeriodicalId":169592,"journal":{"name":"Education and Linguistics Research","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123711326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study focuses on the learners’ WTC in the Saudi context. The participants were 23 female preparatory year students who studied English courses at King Abdul-Aziz University. The study’s instrument is a questionnaire adopted by Mahmoodi and Moazam (2014) to measure the WTC of Iranian learners and modified it to be suitable for Saudi learners. The findings indicated that the participants are WTC in English inside the classrooms; however, they are more willing to communicate outside the classrooms. The findings also showed a significant positive correlation between WTC inside and outside EFL classrooms. Finally, the study’s findings encourage the teachers and instructors to involve the learners in more interesting communicative activities that increase their WTC inside the classrooms.","PeriodicalId":169592,"journal":{"name":"Education and Linguistics Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130894815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study focused on Jordanian public secondary school EFL teachers and drew on Macaro’s (2001) three codeswitching positions—optimal (i.e., L1 use can enhance L2 learning), maximal (i.e., L1 use should be minimized in L2 learning), and virtual (i.e., L1 should never be used in L2 learning). Data were collected through a classroom observation and two rounds of interviews, one pre- and one post-observation. The findings suggested that teachers’ views on L1 use varied depending on two main factors: 1) students’ L2 proficiency, and 2) type of lesson. In terms of Macaro’s (2001) framework, teachers held an optimal view toward L1 use with low-proficiency students, yet a maximal view with higher-proficiency students. Similarly, teachers held an optimal position toward L1 use in grammar classes, yet a maximal position in reading classes and a virtual position in listening and speaking classes. The findings of this study are unlike Macaro’s (2001) results, which found that teachers hold a static position toward L1 use regardless of the proficiency of learners or lesson type. Finally, the present study found that teachers were aware of L1 overuse ramifications. The findings of this research may help L2 scholars, policy makers, and teacher-practitioners to understand the role of the L1 in the L2 classroom, particularly in the context of Jordan and similar EFL contexts.","PeriodicalId":169592,"journal":{"name":"Education and Linguistics Research","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125022557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dadjo","doi":"10.5296/elr.v8i1.19258","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5296/elr.v8i1.19258","url":null,"abstract":"This research work investigates pragmatic transfers in Okedokun’s Mopelola: The Tale of a Beauty Goddess. It aims at identifying, analyzing and interpreting pragmatic features through which specific meanings are conveyed in the selected play. In the attempt to reach this goal, the data are randomly collected from the whole play on the basis of a quantitative method. Then, the statistical results are qualitatively discussed and interpreted in terms of their frequency distribution. The findings show a predominance of pragmatic transfer of loan words representing 33.33% followed by proverbs 32.14% and loan-blends 16.16%. Transfers of greetings, insults and apology are low as they represent respectively 3.57%, 3.57%, and 2.38% whereas other transfers such as request, gratitude, offer, blaming/reproaching and advice are almost nonexistent. The high proportions of loan words as well as proverbs suggest the author’s determination to value Yoruba culture and tradition. The almost important proportion of loan-blends constitutes a strategy for the author to attract readers’ attention on the various authentic Yoruba expressions. The presence of transfer in greetings stresses the peculiarity of Yoruba culture characterized by the expression of profound respect to elderly people. On the other hand, the presence of insults indicates that though Yoruba culture is characterized by the expression of profound respect, some Yoruba people, as the black sheep, do develop arrogance in contradiction to their culture.","PeriodicalId":169592,"journal":{"name":"Education and Linguistics Research","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134572781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
