The author has previously proposed a formal treatment of the problem within the framework of Bayesian inference. To implement this approach it is necessary to construct probabilistic models which relate the measured SAR data to the scene properties, i.e. the likelihood function P (data|/spl theta/). The authors now proposes a simple model for the joint statistics in layover areas (i.e. where two or more parts of the scene map to the same area in slant range).","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. To quantify the distribution of snow on a large scale satellite based measurements are necessary. To determine the influence of snow on the passive microwave signal snow thickness measurements and brightness temperatures at 11, 21 and 35 GHz with different incidence angles and polarizations were performed over sea ice in the Kara and Laptev Sea during the Arctic expedition ARK-12 of R.V. Polarstern in September 1996. Comparison of in situ data with two emissivity models including one based on the Combined Radiative Transfer-Strong Fluctuation Theory show that the most important influence on the spaceborne passive microwave signal in the Siberian Arctic is scattering in the snow while the outliers can be explained by absorption in the snow due to high free water content at temperatures near 0/spl deg/C. The brightness temperature gradient ratio of the vertically polarized 19 and 37 GHz channels is used to derive a retrieval algorithm for the snow thickness from SSM/I data. Its sample application to the whole Arctic shows an increase of snow thickness with latitude in accordance with measurements from Russian drifting stations.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The anticipated results of this study are to be used to gain a better understanding of the rheological and structural nature of the Earth's crust in the Lesotho Highlands, and to improve our ability to assess the seismic risk involved in building large reservoirs in this region. The authors introduce the overall problem, presenting some of the geological background, and the practical purpose of this study. Some preliminary results are presented, and some potential limitations relating to long time scale InSAR and phase unwrapping in regions of high relief are discussed.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. In this way the upper and the lower limits of the ozone layer concentrations were calculated, as well as, the lower (natural) limits and the upper limits (permitted pollution) of the pollutants that destroy ozone. The results are important in practical applications allowing one to include the ozone layer depletion as statements on the NO/sub 2/ and freons F11 and F12 in the air quality standards.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The Price algorithm gave smaller distortion of spectral characteristics of merged data compared to the HPF algorithm and provided accuracies similar to the original data using spectral or a combination of spectral and texture features. The gain in overall accuracy by adding one texture band over pure spectral features is higher for merged data than with the original data. Both data merging algorithms result in inferior overall and individual class accuracies compared to the original data for pure spectral as well as for a combination of spectral and texture features. The Price algorithm should be used for those spectral bands only, which are highly correlated with the PAN data. For the poorly correlated band, the HPF algorithm should be used.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. IGARSS'99 (Cat. The satellite acquisitions were scheduled to coincide with the high and low water marks of the Congo river, in order to facilitate assessment of the spatial and temporal distribution of the annual flooding patterns in the river basin. With L-band microwave signals being particularly sensitive to inundated vegetation, the GRFM mosaics were expected to provide an opportunity to investigate inundation dynamics in the poorly mapped wetlands in central Africa. This paper provides an assessment of how well the two central African GRFM mosaics actually represent the two extreme flooding conditions in the Congo basin. In the absence of operational river gauge stations along the Congo, river stages derived by the NASA Radar Altimeter on TOPEX/POSEIDON were used to validate the water level variations during 1996, when the GRFM acquisitions were performed. Historical gauge data dating back to 1959 and earlier, were used to provide an indication the general flooding cycles in areas which could not be measured by the altimeter. Also affecting the \"hydrological usefulness\" of the mosaics, the temporal composition of the JERS-1 data used to form the two canvases, i.e. the occurrence of gaps or scenes with deviating acquisition dates, was finally also investigated.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The German continental reflection seismic program (DEKORP) investigated more than 4500 kilometers of seismic profiles. This data collection is a unique and valuable scientific asset. A clearinghouse for DEKORP data is being developed at the GFZ Potsdam to make this data accessible, thus providing enormous geoscientific potential for other research projects. The core of the clearinghouse is a data archive for DEKORP data consisting of both an archive system and an archive information system. The archive system is responsible for long-term archiving and protection of data. The archive information system provides online access to data. For each data set a catalogue entry has been created. The clearinghouse provides user-friendly access and integrates the data archive into a geoinformation infrastructure which is currently under development at national, European and global levels.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The inputs to the classifier were 1 km resolution mean backscatter and seven first order texture measures derived from the 100 m data by using a 10/spl times/10 independent sampling window. The classification approach included two interdependent stages: 1) a supervised maximum a posteriori Baysian approach to classify the mean backscatter image into 5 general land cover categories of forest, savanna, inundated, white sand, and anthropogenic vegetation classes, and 2) a texture measure decision rule approach to further discriminate subcategory classes based on taxonomic information and biomass levels. Fourteen classes were successfully separated at 1 km scale. The results were verified by examining the accuracy of the approach by comparison with the IBGE and the AVHRR 1 km resolution land cover maps.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. In general, remote sensing data provide a high spatial resolution, but few physical parameters, while point data from surface measurements show high accuracy, but are not spatially resolved. Thematic data like land use classifications give qualitative information of the surface cover, but remain static in time. In the present study, the moisture status of the land surface is monitored using the daily evolution of the evaporative fraction (EF). Among the various flux ratios used in energy balance modelling, EF has received special interest. EF is defined as the part of the available energy used for evapotranspiration. This quantity is an indicator of the moisture status of the land surface, mainly consisting of natural vegetation and agriculture. As a study region the island of Sicily has been chosen. Its Mediterranean climate is characterised by a dry and hot summer period and humid months in the winter season.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Determining the spatial pattern of inundation in monsoonally domination wetlands and the sequence of floodplain drying is an important first step to understanding the hydrologic, geomorphic and ecological processes operating in these landscapes. SIR-C data acquired in 1994 and AIRSAR multiband imagery obtained over the study site in October 1993 and again in November 1996 were available for analysis along with MOMS-2P optical data. Radarsat imagery was acquired on a near monthly basis during 1998 for the study site. The data were calibrated, geo-referenced and overlain in order to determined water boundaries and to map the pattern of receding water levels. Both Standard Beam 4 and ScanSAR data has been analysis to evaluate the usefulness of C-band horizontally polarised data for wetland mapping. The identification of saturated condition under open canopies commonly found in Australian monsoonal forests can be demonstrated at all three wavelengths. Significantly multirate radarsat imagery proved used in detecting the distribution and extent of water under trees in all seasonal conditions; in mapping the pattern of floodwater recession and in assessing the drying out phases observed in this wetland environment.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium.
