We develop a theoretical model of the precautionary cash holdings. Our empirical results show that the fraction of a company’s shares that are held by the founding family members or their descendants influences the use of cash and equivalents, dividend policy and debt structure of a firm. Our results are robust to different estimation methods and alternative model specifications. We find that family firms tend to rely less on long-term debt financing, pay fewer dividends and carry higher precautionary cash balances.","PeriodicalId":169514,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Economics and Business Administration","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134439496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mu ltiple studies have demonstrated student-learning outcomes as well as provided descriptions of servic e-learning projects and syllabi. However, limited research has been conducted exploring the effects o f service-learning on the community. This pioneerin g study offers preliminary data on the contribution o f service-learning to the community by exploring th e relationships between a six-week service-learning p roject and the community partner. Utilizing STAR te st results and principal and student feedback, the res earchers examine the outcomes of a six-week college service-learning project at a local urban continuat ion high school. STAR test results from the Califor nia High School Exit Exam from 2008 through 2011 and classroom findings are examined. The results reveal positive changes among the high school student group based upon their evaluative attitudes towards individual strengths, motivation and career choices . Finally, the implications of this study are discu ssed.","PeriodicalId":169514,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Economics and Business Administration","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122624525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the lens of Wildavsky’s Cultural Theory of Budgeting, this study analyzes s tate level Big Five personality characteristics and their relationship to budgetary shortfalls. Signifi cant relationships between per-capita GDP, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and o penness to new experience with state budget gaps were observed. An interaction effect between consci entiousness and agreeableness was also observed. This study links the aggregated individual personal ity of a state’s population to the outcomes of its policy making. We find that the CDS premium of all 11 banks is mostly explained by one common factor. We also find that the common factor of the banks’ CDS premium is mainly affected by the level and the volatility of stock market prices in developed markets and oil prices. It suggests that the Korean banking industry is susceptible to foreign shocks due to the heavy dependency of the Korean economy on export. We also find that a structural break in the common part of CDS premium occurred in mid-2007, implying that the exposure of credit risk in Korean banks jumped up after the 2007 financial crisis.","PeriodicalId":169514,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Economics and Business Administration","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126871741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

F or many years, the administration has intensified as a closed science, associated only with economics, la w and political science. However, this approach did not b ring anything good, because almost nothing in the administration has improved. Therefore, it is neces sary to connect the administration with the natural sciences which give the best description of the wor ld around us. Because of this the concept of fracta ls gives us a good insight primarily why administratio n tends to increase and why the job in the administ ration of people outside the church seems meaningless, complicated and full of paperwork.","PeriodicalId":169514,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Economics and Business Administration","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126037368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to provide deep and rich investigation, the impact of the antecedent factors on the marketing mix adaptation was examined. A questionnaire was used a s the instrument of the study and the data collection procedures included self-administered qu estionnaires and emailed ones. The questionnaires were sent to 780 firms and 401 valid questionnaires were returned making the response rate 51.4%. Data collected were analyzed using Statistical Pack age for Social Sciences (SPSS) for the purposes of descriptive statistics on the demographic character istics of the subjects and exploratory factor analy sis, while Partial Least Square (PLS) was used to determ ine the interactions between the various constructs for ascertaining the various structured equation mo dels. The findings revealed that some of the antecedent factors have a significant impact on the marketing mix adaptation strategies while others seem not to have this significant impact. IMPACT OF DEREGULATION OF THE JAMAICA MOBILE PHONE MARKET ON CALLING RATES 牙买加移动电话市场放松管制对通话费率的影响

Consumers have benefited with significant cuts in rates for mobile phone service following the entry of new service providers. This study models the competition among old and new service providers as a game of entry deterrence in which the entrant is of two types, a low-cost or a high-cost entrant. The entrant knows its type but the incumbent does not. However, the incumbent knows the probability that nature assigns to a particular type of entrant. Four scenarios are examined as candidates for equilibrium. In the first scenario, our model shows that the incumbent can ensure that a new entrant stays out by setting price too low. In scenario two, regardless of the action of the incumbent, the low-cost entrant will always enter the market and the incumbent will cooperate. For scenario three, the incumbent’s action to fight an entrant will only make the high-cost entrant to stay out if price is set too low or cost is too high. In the final scenario, the entrant will always enter regardless of its type and the incumbent will have no other choice than to cooperate. In the case of the Jamaica mobile phone market, our model suggests that the only Bayesian Nash equilibrium is a separating equilibrium in which the incumbent fights entry and the low-cost entrant enters the market. In equilibrium, the price war between old and new companies will persist until all economic profits have been eroded, potentially setting the stage for a return to monopoly. However, even under a monopoly, the low rates for service will persist as the incumbent has a strong incentive to keep prices low to deter any potential new entrants. Based on our model results, we conclude that incumbent mobile phone service providers in Jamaica will continue to institute a price war and a new provider will enter the market only if it has superior technology or a strong financial base.","PeriodicalId":169514,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Economics and Business Administration","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127591613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Attitude is referred to as a positive or negative evaluation of people, activities, ideas, objects, event, or just about anything in the environment. Different facets of the e-shopping behavior of consumers have been investigated in previous literature. These facets can generally be divided into three namely, behavioral intention, actual behavior and attitude toward behavior. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of consumers’ trust and attitude toward online shopping. A quantitative research design was adopted to collect data. Multiple regression analysis method was used to conduct this study. The findings of the study will contribute to both theory and practice. The results of this study have important contributions and implications for practitioners and policy-makers. This study contributed to the field of consumers’ trust and attitude relationship with online shopping in the context of developing countries. It is contended that the examination of the effects of consumers’ trust and attitude toward online shopping is more significant than the examination of a direct relationship, which is quite obvious.","PeriodicalId":169514,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Economics and Business Administration","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125790159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When some respondents cheat in their answers to the questions in a survey for a variety of reasons, the survey results become useless. Currently, there is no appropriate probability model to address this phenomenon \"cheating\" in a survey. An efficient methodology is needed to estimate the proportion of \"cheaters\" in a survey and assess the statistical significance of the estimate. Such a methodology does not exist now in the literature. This article fulfils the need. In a pioneering manner, this article has formulated a bivariate probability model to explain the \"cheating\" in surveys. Several statistical properties of this new model are identified and explained. For illustration of the new probability model, the responses from 259 less and 217 more educated Germans about xenophobia are considered. The xenophobia is a stumbling block to a successful business operation in this globalized economy. Two psychometric reasons: \"Insecurity level\" and \"social pressure\" behind the xenophobia are captured with the help of the probability model and they are explained. The model of this article helps to predict \"honesty\" versus \"cheating\" levels in a survey. A statistical testing procedure is prepared to check whether an estimated \"social pressure\" level is significant.","PeriodicalId":169514,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Economics and Business Administration","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124898000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
