When the translator is not able to perceive the cultural symbols of the text or he/she is ignoring the culture of the target language and the target text will lose its function. Thus, the starting point of this study is built on the way in which the monolingual individual perceives a foreign language through comparison and abstraction and how it is received by bilingual individuals, and how it is reflected in the translation process constitutes. This study includes a survey used to examine the cultural competence of the bilingual first-grade students of German Translation and Interpreting at the Istanbul University department of Translation Studies. Furthermore, translation from German to Turkish and vice versa and a translation assessment grid are used to gather data as regards the translation of the recipe for “simit” (Bagel) and “Brezel”. The data acquired from this study is also examined in the context of cultural competence; thus conjectures are provided as regards the cultural competence of bilingual students. ABSTRACT Cultural elements are important constituents of translation, which is defined as an intercultural communication activity. Broadly speaking, it can be said that culture is the sum of the traditional ways of life, ideas and artistic assets of a society and it creates the unity of a people who speak the same language. Language is the element which makes cultural interaction and intercultural communication possible. Naturally, intercultural interaction is formed when different cultures make contact with each other. It is inevitable that this contact happens through translation. In the process of translation, the world view and the perception of culture of the translator is a key factor for the message to be delivered to the recipients as intended. The functionality of the target text depends on the reception of the cultural elements in the translated text by the translator and his/her consideration of the target culture. Even though opera emerged and blossomed in Western societies in the early sixteenth century, it took four more centuries to pass so that opera could meet the Turkish audience. Translation from Western sources has been a substantial medium to Westernize and Europeanize the Ottoman Empire and Republican Turkey. The proclamation of Tanzimat was the beginning of transformation in the multicultural and multilingual Ottoman Empire to form a nation-state, and therefore the Westernization process started in all fields including literature and music. Opera was one of the new art forms that came into prominence apart from theatre and prose. Since the Republic gave much importance to polyphonic music and attempted to carry Turkish music into universal standards, works of art in the most paramount genre of music, the opera, were translated. Translations of operas were carried out by the Turkish composers of the time in order to achieve a singable and coherent translation in terms of prosody. In this context, this study aims to present both the historical journey of opera translation in Turkey and to introduce the remarks of some contemporary opera performers of Ankara State Opera and Ballet, who were interviewed so as to grasp their perception of translated opera.","PeriodicalId":167977,"journal":{"name":"İstanbul Üniversitesi Çeviribilim Dergisi/ I.U. Soylem duzleminde utopyaya karsitligiyla kendini tanimlayan ve gerekcelendiren distopya, utopyalarin gercek topluma yonelttigi elestirileri de kendisine miras olarak almistir. Utopya yazininin tarihsel evrimine baktigimizda ozellikle klasik utopya eserlerinde one cikan ada kavramiyla karsilasiriz. Utopya yazari, kurgu duzenini gercek duzenden soyutlayarak gercek toplum duzenine karsi bir tur yabancilasma saglar. Boylelikle duzeninin aksayan yonlerini ve eniyilesme yolunda yapilmasi gerekenleri onyargisiz, disaridan bakan bir gozle betimleyebilir. Distopya yazini, utopyalarin aksine, soyutlamayi gercekten yabancilasmak icin degil kendini gercek ile gerekcelendirmek icin kullanir. Cevirmenin kaynak metin yazarinin yonelttigi toplum elestirisiyle ideolojik baglamda kurdugu iliski cevirmenin gorunmezligiyle bir karsitlik yaratarak cevirmeni, deyim yerindeyse, su yuzune cikmaya zorlamaktadir. Ceviri incelemelerinde bu tur karsitliklarin varligi ceviri elestirmenleri ve arastirmacilari icin verimli bir zemin olusturur. Ceviri edinci kaynak metnin anlasilmasindan erek metnin uretilmesine kadar olan surecte cevirmenin uzmanlasmasina ve bilincli hareket etmesine isaret eder. Bu nedenle bir takim alt edincleri gerektirir. Bu calismada ceviri edincini olusturan butun bu alt edinclerden dil edinci, metin edinci, kultur edinci, arastirma edinci, konu ve uzmanlik alani edinci ve son olarak teknoloji edinci tanimlanmistir. Calismanin odak noktasini olusturan teknoloji edincini daha anlasilir kilmak adina, Turkce literaturdeki teknoloji egitimi ile ilgili calismalar ve yabanci kaynaklardaki ceviri edinci modelleri incelenmistir. Teknoloji edincinin sinirlarini belirledikten sonra, Turkiye’deki 13 devlet universitesinde Ceviribilim veya Mutercim Tercumanlik Bolumlerinin mufredat planlarinda ve ders iceriklerinde teknolojiyi konu alan dersler incelenmistir. Calismanin amaci, Alman yazar Michael Ende’nin Die unendliche Geschichte (1979) adli unlu fantastik cocuk ve genclik romaninin Turkce cevirileri orneginde cocuk ve genclik edebiyati cevirisi alanina katki saglamaktir. Eserin toplamda Saadet Ozkal (Ende 1986; 1999; 2017) ve Saffet Gunersel (Ende 1996) tarafindan hazirlanan dort cevirisi bulunmaktadir. Tum ceviri eserler Bitmeyecek Oyku ismiyle yayimlanmistir. Cevirmenlerin bircok ceviri sorunu ile karsilasmasi, Die unendliche Geschichte adli cocuk fantastik romaninin cok sayida kendine ozgu gorsel, dilsel ve bicemsel ogeler icermesinden kaynaklanmaktadir. Eserde bir ceviri sorunu olusturan unsurlardan bir tanesi eserde buyuk bir onem tasiyan ve yazarin yaraticiligini on plana cikaran fantastik varlik ve yerlerin isimleridir. Calismada islevsel ve cocuk/ genc okur odakli ceviri kurami isiginda (C. Nord ve E. O’Sullivan) ceviri sorunu olusturan fantastik varlik ve yer isimleri ornekleri ele alinmis, cevirmenlerin soz konusu ceviri sorunlarini asmak icin kullandiklari ceviri tekniklerinin farklilik gosterdigi saptanmistir.
