Students’ choice of programs during their enrolment into pre-universities will affect their ultimate decision to pursue STEM careers. The number of students who enrolled in STEM programs is declining. A number of Science stream graduates of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) opted to enroll in Arts stream instead of Science stream during their pre-university studies. These students revealed that they either fear Science subjects which are deemed more difficult or have no interests. The objective of this study is to examine the factors that influence STEM interests among pre-university students. The sample population was taken from University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) Semester 2 Foundation in Arts (FIA) students, session 2018/2019. This research was carried out using a questionnaire. The data were analyzed using R software. The results revealed that teachers were the most influential factor to inspire STEM interests. Academic institutions may potentially use the findings to formulate their marketing strategies to increase STEM enrolments. This study will help increase the awareness of the gap between STEM interests and growth in STEM graduates. It provides an insight for future research on students’ interests in STEM careers.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115767488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

India oversees an estimated 960 million tonnes of solid waste generation annually. The lesser developed Indian rural villages have no systematic means of solid waste management, exposing the village communities to severe health repercussions. The purpose of this study is to conduct an impact analysis of the current waste management and sanitation practices followed in the village Indpur, Himachal Pradesh, India. Participatory research methods were adopted based on Human Centered Design approach to deeply understand the persistent challenge, its impact on the community and propose a sustainable intervention to address the identified problem. The study proposes a novel solution in the form of plastic blocks that is capable of addressing the twin challenge of plastic waste management and sanitation. Done as part of the Live-in-Labs® program, the study manages to address a multi domain rural challenge through a human centric and sustainable development approach that concerns various Sustainable Development Goals of the UN.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126297606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If successful, it can provide stable income and food security for eighty percent of the world’s poor living in rural areas. However, many poor rural farmers face multiple challenges to agricultural success, threatening their food security, income, and livelihoods. This study aimed to investigate and assess the challenges related to farming methodologies and work practices of small and marginal farmers in a rural village located in Rajasthan, India. An ethnographic, naturalistic study was conducted. Results indicated significant challenges to agricultural outcomes, including lack of necessary agricultural technologies, excessive expenses related to machine rentals (e.g., tractors, threshers), selection of soil nutrients based on intuition, destruction of crops by animal invasion, inconsistent electricity supply for agricultural needs, and lack of roads. One of the most pressing issues was the need for low-cost machinery, particularly a multi-purpose thresher, to significantly reduce excessive manual labor and expenses. A cost-efficient multi-grain thresher is introduced that runs on renewable energy and provides safety measures in the feeding mechanism, making it easy to use. This technology can lessen the strenuous physical exertion of farmers and laborers, also increasing their income.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134152620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current disaster education methods in Indonesia such as seminars, campaigns, promotions, and educational videos require significant resources but tend to be one-way, less interactive, and cannot simulate actual events. This study aims to complement existing disaster education capabilities through collaborative mobile games that can represent the disaster event with less resources and extend the accessibility and flexibility. As collaboration is one of the keys to sustainable disaster management, a multiplayer game is proposed to facilitate interaction between players. Currently, the majority of multiplayer earthquake and tsunami educational games are offline so that the accessibility is still limited. Development of multiplayer online game is a solution to accommodate more participants in collaborative learning process. A multi-language feature is proposed to overcome the language barrier in collaborative learning across countries. Therefore, a collaborative multilingual mobile game for earthquake and tsunami disaster preparedness education named Tsunami Fighters is developed. The game is a turn-based visual novel game which combines competition with collaboration in its mechanic. The game also evaluates the player’s knowledge before and after playing the game. Tsunami Fighters has been tested for students based on game-based learning heuristic evaluation consisting of mobility, usability, playability, learning content, multiplayer and chat components using Likert scale, with overall score 4.13 out of 5. This score indicates that the Tsunami Fighters game can be used as a method for earthquake and tsunami disaster preparedness collaborative learning.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132086829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerical simulation based on Finite Integration Technique (FIT) has been exploited for the characterization and optimization of the performance of the device. Performance optimization has been done in terms of coupling efficiency through systematic adjustments in the structural parameters of the proposed device and a coupling efficiency as high as $sim$86% has been recorded at the telecom wavelength (1.55$mu m$). Further analysis of the coupler has been presented in detail with four figures of merit (i.e. the reflection coefficient, Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), return loss, and mismatch loss). Tolerance limit has also been added for the device to establish this work as a guiding manual for practical fabrication and nanoscale integration of the proposed coupler.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127073286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Algae bloom levels significantly affect the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) in a certain body of water. The amount of DO level indicates if the oxygen in the water is enough to provide and support the ecosystem and if the marine environment is suitable for aquatic organisms for healthy survival. A trophic state assessment was done using dissolved oxygen prediction model relating to algae growth factors is proposed to address this issue. The models are trained and tested using five different estimators, namely: multilinear regression (MLR), artificial neural network regression (ANN-R), support vector machine regressor (SVR), gaussian process regressor (GPR), and k-nearest neighbor regression (KNN-R) based on algae growth factors from a marine culture as attributes; which include temperature, power of hydrogen (pH), and specific conductance of water. The target data used is the DO level. Each of the predictors is remarkably contributing to the algae growth level, while DO indicates the level of algae bloom. The relationship between the two sets of data were produced from the models and will be very important in simplifying systems by minimizing DO sensors needed usually for water quality monitoring. Cross-validation R2 values obtained were: 0.88, 0.91, 0.91, 0.92, and 0.93 respectively as mentioned above.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115066069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much of these evolutions are incremental, differential and the aim is to sustain or rise above others amidst a dynamic landscape. As data and knowledge bases extend, the fitness of features in each evolution requires systemic modelling targeting multi-objectives. Identification of the local regions of interest and significant features enable more efficient optimization. The information core, current or new invariant features which proceed to the next iteration coupled with gamification in certain domains, can lead to varying implications. This paper briefly reviews literature on associative networks, case-based reasoning, combinations and permutations, optimization, and gamification and conclude with implications and opportunities for symbiotic networks.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131303852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
