Using Tesla’s concept of harnessing electrical energy using sunrays, the researcher designed an innovative photon energy collector comprising of capacitors, diodes, coil collector, and CFL bulb. Rather than using sunrays, the Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) was utilized. This experimental type of research design wants to prove that a useable electrical energy can be harnessed from a CFL bulb by transforming the radiant energy through the use of an innovative photon energy collector circuit. Experiments were conducted to prove the viability like (1) understanding the effect of the following PCB Configuration (Embedded & Non-Embedded Circuit) on the DC generated voltage values of the proposed Photon Energy Collector Circuit, (2) understanding the effect of the Type of Bulb used and Time Duration on the DC generated voltage values of the proposed Photon Energy Collector Circuit, (3) understanding the effect of the CFL Bulb Wattage Rating on the DC generated voltage values of the proposed Photon Energy Collector Circuit, (4) understanding the effect of the following coil specification: (a) diameter of coil (b) Number of Turns of Coil Collector (c) Cross sectional area of the coaxial cable on the DC generated voltage values of the proposed Photon Energy Collector Circuit, and (5) understanding the effect of the following Circuit Connections (Series vs. Parallel) on the DC generated voltage & current values of the proposed Photon Energy Collector Circuit to deliver the optimal configuration inorder to harness much energy. Based on the result, verified through different test and measurement equipment, findings show that useable electrical energy can be harnessed using a Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) as source of radiant energy.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128869100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is particularly difficult for the indigenous communities since the population size is small, remote and challenged by other additional issues such as the nomadic nature of the people and the difficulty to secure essential power and water services. As fuel and maintenance costs to operate conventional pumping systems are becoming an issue, the hydraulic ram pump (hydram) is an alternative pumping device that is relatively simple technology that uses renewable energy, and is durable. It uses energy from a falling quantity of water to pump 10 – 20% of it to an elevation much higher than the original level at the source. No other energy is required and as long as there is a continuous flow of falling water, the pump will work continuously and automatically. The objective of the study is to construct a reliable and low-cost ram, made of locally available off-the-shelf parts for the people of village in Royal Belum Forest, Gerik, Perak, Malaysia. Different designs were tested under varying conditions. The final design of the hydram is able to deliver water to the header tank at a rate of 6.70 m3/day family with a calculated efficiency of 62%. The power required of about 23.9 kW is enough to overcome the calculated head losses at the site.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125284782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The disease severely affects the motor system and can lead to death of the patients. There is no cure available for the disease. The symptoms on motor system is seen very late which leads into difficulty in management of the disease. There is no cure for the disease which makes it more difficult when the disease is diagnosed later. For early stages of Parkinson’s disease, there are some medications to improve the symptoms. There are certain symptoms like slurred speech, problems in utterances, etc. which are seen earlier. These symptoms can be leveraged to diagnose the disease in its earlier stages. Recently, computers and machine learning algorithms have been widely used in diagnosis of various diseases. Speech attributes can be analyzed using machine learning algorithms to build predictive models for detection of Parkinson’s disease. In this paper, twin-support vector machine (TSVM) based on feature selection technique has been discussed along with other ML techniques for the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Feature selection based TSVM has shown promising results in classification of Parkinson’s disease patients from healthy subjects.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133770002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study captured reactions and responses from ten undergraduates who had no background in Programming and were facing difficulties coping with an introductory course in Programming. Four Lego Mindstorms units were deployed to examine the participants’ problem-solving and computational thinking skills. Findings indicate a high positive response (t=3.88 and p =0.004 for Problem Solving; t=-4.13 and p=0.003 for Computational thinking) to the use of Mindstorms as a strategy to encourage higher-order thinking, a critical skill in learning Programming. Participants reported clarity in understanding computational thinking concepts and claimed to be better able to articulate problem-solving tasks when prompted using Mindstorms.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134284695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The World Health organization (WHO) reports an annual incidence of around 100-400 million infections in 2019 which is the largest number of dengue cases ever reported globally and prompted WHO to declare the virus as the world’s top 10 public health threats. It can be turned into life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever which further evolves into dengue shock syndrome. Indispensable useful tools that precisely distinguish dengue and its subtypes in the early stage of disease progression are essential to convenient well-timed supportive care and therapy. In recent years, Bangladesh has seen a hike in the dengue outbreak and 101,000 cases were reported to the WHO in 2019. Such an outbreak can create havoc in society. Because of the lack of vaccine and antiviral drugs, a timely prediction of the dengue outbreak is, therefore, crucial to reducing the casualty. In this paper, we proposed a new machine learning approach to predict dengue fever. A patient dataset, containing information of the patient’s diagnosis report, medical history, and symptoms, was constructed through collecting real-time raw data samples of various types of dengue fever patients from the Medicine Department of Chittagong Medical College Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh. The whole dataset was split into 70:30 ratios using 70% for training and 30% for test purposes. We applied machine learning algorithms, namely decision tree (DT) and random forest (RF) in the proposed classification model. Finally, the decision tree resulted in an average accuracy of 79%, which is higher than the random forest.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114446566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rapid growth of the economic activity in the urban area has caused the urban traffic network to hardly be able to cope with the volume of traffic, resulting in traffic congestion where the number of vehicles exceed the capacity of the network, which affects the performance of the road. In this research, we analyze the structure and performance of the traffic network in Malacca City based on the circuit model. The data was gathered using the standby-observation method and analysis of online resources such as Google Map and OpenStreetMap. For the analysis, the traffic resistance model is employed, whereby the length over lane-widths for the pairs of roads with same origin and destination were studied, together with the influence of the number of traffic light presence along the routes being included. A comparison was then made on the difference in time for the different routes to reach the destination. The results show that under light traffic conditions, the model conforms pretty well with the analogue of the electrical circuit resistance model. This could serve as a guideline to improve the traffic performance for Malacca City and could be applied to other cities in Malaysia that also suffers from traffic congestion.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124638478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the major reasons for that is the inefficient irrigation practices followed. This predicament was endured by the farming community of Dewgain, Jharkhand whose challenges have been studied in this paper. The study revealed that water scarcity was prevalent in Dewgain during the summers. Poor water management has led to decline of agricultural activities during summer resulting in seasonal unemployment. In order to address this challenge, the study focused on understanding the current irrigation practices followed and its impact on agricultural sustenance. The study was conducted using Human Centered Design. The outcome of the study was analysed through qualitative and quantitative methods. Still now the topic remains much challenging since people usually differ reasonably in the way how their expressions are showed. Machine learning approaches are widely used in many state-of-the-art facial emotion recognition techniques. In this paper, an approach for recognizing emotions is proposed that goes ahead with Deep learning concepts giving a priority to Convolutional Neural Networks using the framework of Keras and TensorFlow backend. After the classification phase the task focuses on surveillance using anger and fear emotions. Because according to the Appraisal theory for emotions; fear is due to the primary appraisal that is related to safety of individual, while anger is due to secondary appraisal, which is related to coping with the unsafe conditions. It is revealed that the emotions fear and anger might also be derived from the same neurotransmitter and both the emotions have an effect of threat perceptions. This surveillance task is fulfilled by notifying the user about anger and fear emotions when they pass a higher probability range. For this task a large and a publicly available dataset FER2013 is used which is also a much challenging dataset and the results observed indicate a considerable performance of 64.56.","PeriodicalId":167196,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE 8th R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10-HTC)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121987224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
