The RTLS-6 is assumed to capture the aspects of emotional and social loneliness. However, the items capturing social loneliness are negatively oriented, raising concerns that the two factors of the scale may be artifactual. Across three studies (<i>N<sub>1</sub></i> = 3,079<i>, N<sub>2</sub></i> = 1,233, <i>N<sub>3</sub></i> = 500), we examined the dimensionality and Rasch-conformity of the original and two manipulated versions of the RTLS-6, featuring uniformly worded items toward loneliness and different numbers of response categories. Overall, the results support a two-factor structure of the scale, which remains robust even when wording effects are ruled out. Multidimensional, polytomous Rasch analyses suggest that a four-point intensity response format is most appropriate. In sum, the original RTLS-6 provides evidence aligning with the assumptions of the polytomous Rasch model, particularly regarding model fit, ordered thresholds, and the absence of differential item functioning across several subgroups. Accordingly, the RTLS-6 appears suitable for use as a two-dimensional scale capturing emotional and social loneliness.</p>","PeriodicalId":16707,"journal":{"name":"Journal of personality assessment","volume":" ","pages":"1-15"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2026-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148156494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new instrument, named the Alternative Five Personality Inventory for Adolescents (A5PI-A), was administered to a sample of 1,472 adolescents 12 to 17 years old. Three control scales were developed: Inconsistency (INC), Positive Image Management (PIM), and Negative Image Management (NIM). The factor structure, comprising five factors and 20 facets, proved to be robust across two independent subsamples. Exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) analyses showed excellent goodness-of-fit indexes. Internal consistency coefficients were globally satisfactory, and 2-month test-retest reliability estimates were adequate. Correlations between self-report and parent-report versions were high. Convergent and divergent validity were examined using the JS NEO-S for adolescents, the first-order factors of the High School Personality Questionnaire, and parental ratings of adolescents' personality traits and externalizing behaviors. The results indicate a high degree of convergence between the A5PI-A factors and theoretically related external measures, as well as appropriate discriminant validity. Overall, the A5PI-A demonstrates solid psychometric properties and appears suitable for both research and applied psychological assessment in Spanish adolescent populations.</p>","PeriodicalId":16707,"journal":{"name":"Journal of personality assessment","volume":" ","pages":"1-11"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2026-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148150219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While Criterion B assessment yields valuable insight into overall trait levels, it fails to capture how traits manifest across situations, which is particularly relevant for traits marked by high within-person variability, such as those seen in borderline personality pathology (BPP). To capture this within-person variability, the current study leverages Criterion Profile Analysis to investigate whether behavioral signatures, derived from a Situational Judgment Test (SJT) for borderline traits, can enhance the prediction of personality functioning beyond traditional trait assessment. Undergraduate students (<i>N</i> = 626), all situated in the developmental phase of late adolescence completed both the SJT and established self-report measures of Criterion A personality functioning and Criterion B maladaptive traits. Results showed that situation-based response patterns-especially of emotionally labile and impulsive traits-explain additional variance in Criterion A personality functioning, above and beyond mean Criterion B trait levels. These findings support the added value of integrating dynamic, context-sensitive assessments to comprehensively understand personality functioning. Implications for the further development of innovative contextualized and dynamic strategies to assess BPP vulnerabilities are discussed.</p>","PeriodicalId":16707,"journal":{"name":"Journal of personality assessment","volume":" ","pages":"1-12"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2026-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148143824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research in other areas suggests that greater specificity may enhance the coverage of maladaptive traits and the prediction of clinically relevant outcomes. In a sample of 774 outpatients, we examined this possibility using the Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology-Basic Questionnaire (DAPP-BQ) across four hierarchical levels: domains, facets, subfacets, and items. First, we compared their relative ability to capture each of the 93 DSM PD criteria. Next, we evaluated their capacity, relative to DSM categories, to predict 55 clinical and life outcomes. Coverage of PD criteria increased by 40% when using facets rather than domains, 60% for subfacets, and 81% for items, with particularly large gains for Clusters A and B. Predictive accuracy also improved for many relevant outcomes including education, social support, psychopathology, substance use, violent behavior, arrests, self-harm, and suicide attempts. We suggest that finer-grained assessments, by avoiding the limitations of higher-order aggregation, can provide more comprehensive and accurate diagnoses, better-tailored interventions, and sounder theory. Although the lower regions of the hierarchy remain largely uncharted in PDs, they hold promise for realizing the full potential of dimensional psychopathology systems.</p>","PeriodicalId":16707,"journal":{"name":"Journal of personality assessment","volume":" ","pages":"1-11"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2026-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148031610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is grounded in interpersonal theory and highlights the role of social motives and interaction patterns in understanding career derailment. Yet questions remain about how its scales align with predominant models of interpersonal functioning. This study evaluated the HDS scales within the interpersonal circumplex (IPC) using both interpersonal styles and interpersonal problems as reference frameworks. We applied structural summary method analyses to the 11 HDS scales and their subscales in a working adult sample, and evaluated overall strength, specificity, and angular location within circumplex space. Results indicated strong convergence for scales in the Moving Away and Moving Against clusters, which mapped onto the cold-submissive and cold-dominant quadrants of the IPC, respectively. In contrast, Moving Toward scales had weaker and less consistent placement. These findings expand the interpersonal meaning of most HDS scales and highlight their conceptual limitations. Practically, the results support the use of circumplex models to inform interpretation of HDS scales in workplace assessment and development.</p>","PeriodicalId":16707,"journal":{"name":"Journal of personality assessment","volume":" ","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2026-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148031648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the HiTOP-BR in two German-speaking samples: a nonclinical community sample (<i>N</i> = 1,049) and a clinical sample seeking outpatient psychotherapy (<i>N</i> = 601). Confirmatory factor analyses and exploratory factor analyses with target rotation supported the hypothesized six-factor structure across both samples, although observed cross-loadings suggested scope for item refinement. Scalar measurement invariance was established between the clinical and nonclinical samples. Scale scores showed acceptable to good reliability (ω = .77-.88). Convergent and discriminant validity were examined via correlations with established measures of symptoms, maladaptive personality traits, and impairments in personality functioning. As hypothesized, the HiTOP-BR spectra showed the expected associations with corresponding constructs. HiTOP-BR scales further predicted sickness-related work absence beyond established measures, with incremental validity analyses demonstrating additional explained variance in sick days beyond the Patient Health Questionnaire scales. Overall, the HiTOP-BR appears to provide reliable and valid scores for screening purposes, offering a time-efficient method for dimensional psychopathology assessment. Based on sample 1 reliability was estimated via McDonald's omega, structural validity using exploratory graph analysis (EGA), convergent and criterion validity were assessed through correlations with primary affective traits (BANPS-GL), Big Five personality traits (BFI-K), and psychiatric symptoms (ISR). Using sample 2, the proposed latent structure was investigated by a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). All subdomains showed good to excellent internal consistency (ω ≥ 0.88). EGA identified seven communities corresponding to the predefined primary affects. Overall, correlation analyses supported expected relationships between PAFI subdomains, personality, and symptoms. CFA confirmed excellent fit for the correlated subdomains model, while a two-higher-order-factor model showed acceptable fit. Finally, invariance analysis of the factor-structure in both samples suggested full measurement invariance up to the scalar level. To address these issues, this study developed and validated a brief computerized adaptive testing (CAT) system based on a theoretically informed six-factor model. Using a clinical sample of 10,052 adolescent outpatients, confirmatory factor analysis showed the traditional ten-factor model had a substantial identification problem: a non-positive definite matrix from extremely high factor correlations. In contrast, the proposed six-factor model had acceptable fit (CFI = 0.875, RMSEA = 0.061). The CAT system was developed <i>via</i> multidimensional item response theory. In post hoc simulations with a stopping rule (SE < 0.4), average test length was reduced from 90 to 37 items (58.9% reduction), maintaining high agreement with full-scale estimates (≥ 0.89) and acceptable marginal reliability (≥ 0.76). By leveraging natural language processing and machine learning, these chatbots can engage users in conversational exchanges, providing a more nuanced and contextual evaluation of personality traits. We also examine how user perceptions of the AI chatbot influence the validity of machine-inferred personality scores. Data was collected from 189 Prolific participants at two time points. Adopting the multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) analytical framework and based on the generalizability theory (G-theory), we found that machine-inferred scores from both the short essay questionnaire and the AI chatbot interview converge well with scale-based methods but show weaker discriminant validity. Chatbot-based scores demonstrated incremental validity beyond other methods (i.e., scale-based and short essay scores) for predicting subjective health and perceived job performance. Preliminary findings suggest that ease of concentration during the chatbot interview may influence the convergence between scale-based and chatbot-based machine-inferred scores.
