It was vital that the new housing would allow ready access and easy handling for library staff and researchers, while also protecting the poster edges and glossy surfaces from any damage. In addition, the new housing would ideally be constructed efficiently with regards to both time and cost restraints. Imaging techniques and scientific analysis were used to identify materials, revealing details about the original binding structure and later repairs using manuscript waste and textile fragments. Treatment included extensive paper repair to all three volumes and the two gatherings of plates, and strengthening the abbreviated sewing structures with new sewing and spine linings. Materials and methods vary, but most facings involve the temporary attachment of some type of paper to the surface of the work with water or a weak, water-soluble adhesive. Contemporary Japanese practices have developed a multi-layered facing process using rayon paper and Japanese kozo paper, adhered together with funori, a natural seaweed adhesive, and wheat starch paste. The resulting composite is designed to provide a balance of protection, support, flexibility and removability as well as to extend and control treatment time. Adapting this facing process can facilitate the treatment of works on paper that are too damaged to handle safely or treatments where staff are limited. Past cases describe the removal of drawings, and historic wallpaper from secondary supports or mounts using facings. Designed in close cooperation with the Cologne Fire Brigade, the container provides both workstations for documentation, cleaning and preparing for freezing along with storage for most required materials and equipment. This allows for on-site salvage and processing of objects to begin almost immediately in all weathers upon the delivery of the container. This article details the project’s background and conception, a description of the container’s features and its intended use.
